Plastic Surgery - Why Go There?

Plastic Surgery Has A Purpose

The Plastic Surgery industry is booming albeit a bit less so now that the economy is in the tank. Sometimes a minor procedure can make a major increase in ones self esteem. The 15 year old, beautiful, young lady who has her fathers ears that stick straight out the sides of her head; can have a 30-45 minute procedure to pin them back allowing her to feel comfortable wearing a ponytail in the summer. How about the 17 year old male with slight bulges of breast tissue that make him too self conscience to go swimming with his family and friends. He too can have a quick and relatively safe procedure to fix that little imperfection thus giving him the self esteem boost needed to enjoy the outdoor activities he longs to participate in. These types of procedures are quick, often covered by insurance, and do not drastically alter ones appearance.

I spent 6 years as a Circulating Nurse in the Plastic Surgery arena in Eastern Washington. I am currently managing multiple Surgical Groups including the Plastic Surgery department. In our Practice we do what I would call "reasonable" plastic and reconstructive surgery. Things like the ear pinning and breast reductions procedures described above. We also do face lifts, Botox, fillers, and many other types of enhancement (keyword) procedures. We do not do the over done and bizarre things you sometimes see in the Headlines or in Hollywood. If you are considering having any type of Plastic Surgery always go with a Surgeon who is Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, make sure they have done the procedure you are requesting at least 100 times before yours. Ask to see before and after pictures of their work. Find out if they can arrange for you to talk to one of their previous patients who has had the procedure you are interested in, this is most important if you are considering a complete face-lift as all surgeons have different beliefs about how moderate or extreme they should go when performing a face-lift.

Plastic Surgery Purgatory

I was reading the news online this morning when a sidebar caught my attention. It was something like "The Top Ten Plastic Surgery Mistakes" - I was compelled to look. The story was brief and the majority of the article consisted of "before & after" Pictures. Most of the faces I recognized as famous or formerly famous Hollywood stars.

The images were frightful and sad - many fresh faced beautiful people that for whatever reason, vanity I would assume, decided to have unnecessary facial and body make overs. For many of those pictured the "make overs" were atrocious and heinous. I cannot believe that any respectable and reputable surgeon would agree to do these things - but I guess money can cause values to go by the wayside for some folks - surgeons included.

Don't Over Do It!

If you have a minor imperfection that causes you to feel insecure or you are not aging as gracefully as you would like then Plastic Surgery may be an option for you. Always check out your Surgeon very thoroughly. Don't over do it - a little change can make you feel better about your appearance without leading to regrets afterwards. I wish you the best, CL

I agree Techicated - especially Ashley - she looked gorgeous before she had facial procedures. Hillary picked the right surgeon - no doubt about that! Thank you for reading and commenting.

Ashley Judd and Joan should not have gotten plastic surgery. Hillary Clinton looks fabulous though. I guess sometimes it can be successful and other times it's not. But I would never try that stuff. I would rather go the natural way to have a pretty face. By eating healthy, exercising, facial massages and exercises.

Hi healthylife2 - I agree Plastic Surgery is an individual choice and nobody else should pressure a person toward that decision. I guess my "take away" message would be - ALWAYS thoroughly investigate your surgeon, visit former patients if reasonable, and make certain they are Board Certified with the American Colleges of Plastic Surgery. Be aware that Dentists and Opthamalogists are doing minor cosmetic surgeries now - sometimes with no more than a days worth of training on the procedure - use caution should you ever decide it is an avenue you want to pursue.

I think as long as the individual is making the decision to do cosmetic surgery to boost their self esteem rather than because they are pressured by someone else and they have realistic expectations it is fine. It is definitely an individual choice and one change can make a person feel better when they look in the mirror so why not. I've never ruled it out for the future but some of those pictures of celebrities make me a bit nervous. Interesting hub!

I was actually watching tv tonight and saw someone with so much plastic surgery that I said, you can see why its called plastic surgery it does look like they have a plastic face! yes if they need it for surgery, or a disfigurement then fine, but it really is bad how so many people use it to look younger, in fact it makes them look ancient! lol! interesting hub, thanks nell

rajan - I agree - sometimes Plastic Surgery is necessary and the surgeon should be chosen very carefully but it should always be a careful decision. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Some of the changes are frightening I'm sad to say. Thanks for sharing some wonderful tips to help decide how to go about getting it done.

I would say in extreme cases like accidents or to set right malformations to go for it but otherwise to be wary of the consequences before deciding.

      Great article.

I think plastic surgery is truly a great thing. I am glad that the girl with the ears will be able to wear her hair up with confidence. That is a fine example of GOOOD plastic surgery. It can truly help people become more confident by making even minor changes to over sized features, and can reconstruct facial deformities.

Sadly, it has boomed into something else these days. Since it is being overdone by so many celebrities. I believe this has led to doctors who are not really competent attempting operations that they have no business performing.

The surgeons of some of these celebrities have turned their patients into caricatures.

      Voted up!

Pamela- I agree we all want to look our best and the better choice is taking care of our body. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a very useful option for those in need. Thank you.

Plastic surgery is certainly an individual choice, but I think many people think it will somehow change their lives. Of course, it is nice to look better, but as you've shown it does not always turn out that way. Sometimes the results are worse. Eating healthy, maintaining your weight and exercising is a better choice, but there are people who receive injuries that need plastic surgery, which is totally different. Interesting hub.

I think plastic surgery is wonderful for things like burn victims, deformities and the like. I know botox, face lifts, and all those vanity procedures abound these days but you know what? Aging is part of life. I'll do what I can without surgery to age gracefully, but I am content to age. I've earned every wrinkle!

I agree that Hillary's didn't turn out half bad though. :)
