Ponytail Hairstyles: Keeping It Interesting
If you are like me and love having a hair style that's still long enough to pull back, it can be easy to fall into a trap of throwing your hair up into the same kind of ponytail or simple bun every day. Although there is nothing wrong with that once in a while, it's much more interesting to mix it up. There are a lot of ponytail variations out there that are simple, fun, and quick, which means that you can still be out the door in the same amount of time as you would be normally. So fully embrace your long hair and have fun with different styles every week.
A quick note: I know that many of us are still nostalgic about the 80's. And yep, I'm one of them. I can still watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off or Back to the Future about any day of the week. But that doesn't mean that you should still be embracing the scrunchie. Whatever you do, please do not wear scrunchies!
If you normally part your hair in the middle, try parting it on the side instead when you pull your hair back. Also consider pulling it straight back for a sleek ponytail. If your bangs naturally go to one side or the other, work with them for your part. You can also keep your bangs or shorter layers parted and loose, framing your face, and pull the rest of your hair straight back.
Tired of a straight part? Consider a zigzag or messy part.

Most of us are creatures of habit when it comes to parting our hair. Once parted on the left, the hair is always parted on the left. Get adventurous for a change and try the other side!
Wearing your hair half up is an easy way to change your ponytail look with almost no extra work. Again, you can change your part for this or simply pull half your hair back with your hair parted the way it normally is. You'll be surprised how different your hair can look with this simple style.
If you have bangs, consider whether or not you want to pull them back when you wear your hair in a ponytail. You can also change the way that you normally wear your bangs by changing your part.
Don't want bangs but looking for a way to change the way your hair frames your face? Consider shorter layers in the front.

There are many different styles and sizes of headbands. Consider the colors and style of your outfit when you choose a headband. Don't make your outfit overly coordinated by choosing a headband in exactly the same color as your skirt or shirt. Instead think about a color that will compliment it. Have fun choosing different patterns and embellishment details (i.e. sequins, flowers, etc.).
Decorated Bobby Pins
Plain bobby pins are a wonderful way to secure stray locks including bangs and short layers to create a sleeker ponytail. If you're looking for something different, consider decorated bobby pins. There are a number of inexpensive sets out there that are adult appropriate with details such as buttons, fabric, and beads. Looking for a new DIY project? Consider making your own.

Adding a real or fake flower to your hairstyle can also add a pop of color to your outfit. If you're able to use a seasonal fresh flower, go with it. There are lots of fake flower options for the rest of the year, too. Just like it was important not to overly coordinate with your headband, don't overly coordinate with a flower either.

This isn't really an option for a ponytail. However, I thought that I would include it here because if you're reading this, you probably like experimenting with other updos as well. Hair sticks are a perfect addition to a wide variety of updos. Consider the style of the hair sticks for the type of updo so that they coordinate. Check out epstone on Etsy for wooden hair sticks.
Ribbons or Bows
Adding a ribbon or a bow to a ponytail is a very easy way to dress it up a little. Consider using several ribbons in coordinating colors or different shades of the same color. It's important to make sure that ribbons and especially bows don't make your hairstyle look appropriate for a little girl or like you're ready for a school spirit day in high school. Consider tasteful, classic options. ribbonorama on Etsy is a great resource for purchasing bulk ribbon.
The side ponytail always reminds me of the 80s. Thankfully its recent comeback has been more tasteful and classic. This is another very easy ponytail variation that can completely change your look. Consider your part and your bangs or layers for your side ponytail.
