NYX Ultimate Edit Petite Eye Shadow Palette (Brights) Review

Jessica loves all things creative in the world of entertainment, crafting, & cosmetics.

Earlier this year, I embarked on a brand new passion; creating YouTube videos about makeup and other beauty-related topics. In trying to come up with new content from week to week and having to think of new looks to create, I quickly realized most of the eye shadow I owned was limited to dozens of shades of nude. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I mean, have you gone into the makeup section in the last couple of years without seeing the words "nude" or "naked" plastered on dozens of products...probably not! However, go onto Instagram and you will see an array of all of the colors of the rainbow painted on the eyes of influencers near and far. With the trends this summer moving towards beautiful, bright-colored eye makeup looks, I didn’t want to be left behind! Unfortunately, I am on a makeup low-buy (self-imposed to thin out my stash) and I need a really good excuse to buy eye shadow these days (read about my journey here -->http://hub.me/amthH.) How could I create different makeup looks to please lots of people with only one color family? I couldn't! With my new venture as a priority, I found the justification I needed and bought the NYX Ultimate Edit Petite Eye Shadow Palette for a humble selection of bright colors to create more looks. For the full, unbiased review of my experience with this palette, keep reading!

Purchasing

You can purchase this palette where NYX products are sold, such as, Walgreens, CVS, Ulta, and others. You can also purchase it from online retailers, such as, Amazon, Ulta.com, CVS/Walgreens/etc and the product website. I purchased mine from CVS. It was originally 5.99 but I had some CVS coupons and got it for less than $5.00 before tax. This is the bright one but there are a couple/few other color choices.

Packaging

The packaging is not fancy at all, which is very typical of a drugstore palette. However, it is sleek and very convenient. There is nothing wrong with it at all. There is no brush or applicator, which is fine for me because I use my own brushes anyways.

There are 6 colors; a warm yellow, orange, hot pink, fuchsia/purple, bright blue and green.

This is what the eye shadows look like in the pan. Top picture was taken without the flash and the bottom was taken with the flash.

The Claim

All NYX products are creulty-free and vegan. This palette is no exception. It claims to be a “small but mighty, travel-friendly” palette with colors that have been “handpicked.” It claims to have “velvety-rich textures” in “mesmerizing finishes.”

Here are swatches of the colors. Top pictures is without the flash and the bottom is with the flash. I feel that the top picture is a more accurate representation of what the colors actually look like in person.

The Verdict

For the money, it’s a decent palette. This palette has filled a void that was in my eye shadow collection, in that, I needed more bright colors and I didn’t want to invest a lot of money. What I like about this palette is that it does have a decent color payoff, the texture is great, and the colors are bright. What I dislike about it is that the yellow was more on the orange side and I don’t like how similar the pink and fuchsia are. I would have preferred a truer purple. Also, the pink and/or fuchsia shade(s) temporarily stain my skin. I'm not entirely sure which one does it or if it's both. It eventually comes off but it takes a day or so. Before I purchased this palette, I would use blush when I wanted a pop of hot pink on my lids and the blush never did that to my skin.

Overall, this palette did most of what I needed it to do and what I intended when I purchased it. It was a good compromise when I needed a bright palette and didn’t want to spend a lot of money. It served a purpose but other than that, I wouldn’t repurchase this palette again. Despite some of the downsides to this palette from NYX, I am interested in trying their Ultimate Palette that has a bigger selection of bright colors for future purchase.
