Best Toothpaste to Prevent Canker Sores

Sodium lauryl sulfate, or better known as sodium dodecyl sulfate, SLS, or sodium laurilsulfate, is a common ingredient in most toothpaste brands on the shelves. In the simplest form, SLS is something that you want to avoid because it is a type of “soap.”

Why does your toothpaste need “soap” in it to clean your teeth? Well, it thickens the toothpaste and creates more of a foaming effect. It’s also cheap for manufactures to create and mass-produce. As anything mass-produced and cheapened for consumers, like processed and packaged foods, it is something that you may want to consider eliminating from your shopping cart at the local Wal Mart or Piggly Wiggly.

3 Reasons SLS in Toothpaste is unwanted

Other than the fact that toothpaste with SLS is cheapened, there are also some significant downsides to using it, and you should probably look for an SLS-free toothpaste to replace with your usual brushing paste.

Some Problems with SLS:

  • Causes skin irritation
  • Is used in household cleaners
  • Causes gingivitis and other gum diseases

SLS Free Toothpaste Brands

Those are just a few of the issues with Sodium lauryl sulfate. As you can imagine, you probably don’t want something that is used to remove tough household stains in your mouth. Similarly, you probably don’t want to brush your teeth with a paste that will actually cause irritation of the mouth and gum diseases…

You may want to switch to new toothpaste immediate if something like this alarms you. Some toothpaste brands that are SLS free include:

  • Dr. Ken's Maximum Care
  • Tom's of Maine's Toothpaste
  • Auromere
  • TheraBreath
  • Kiss My Face
  • Sensodyne
  • Natural Dentist
  • Squigle
  • Durafresh

Choosing natural toothpaste is the right choice. If you believe that you would benefit from more natural teeth cleaners—you’re absolutely right.

Remember: SLS is especially harmful to children and the elderly. Some toothpaste brands are absolutely toxic—always read labels and make informed choices as a consumer. Here is a list of the best natural toothpastes.

Canker Sore Toothpaste SLS Free

Many users have experienced a great improvement in the frequency with which they get canker sores when using natural SLS free toothpastes. Great improvement meaning that they occurred much less often, in this context. This is not entirely surprising given that SLS is a skin irritant. If you often suffer from these it is worth to try SLS free toothpaste.
