Shaved Head - Shave Your Head

Updated on April 6, 2012

The shaved head look is very popular among men and has been that way since time immemorial.

There are a variety of reasons why men would like to shave their head, either it is being for aesthetic or spiritual reasons. Either way, it can’t be denied that men opt for this haircut because it looks good on them.

Some even speculate that men go shave their head in order to avoid the effects of balding, which is very common among men.

There are several famous personalities and celebrities known for their shaved head and this is very prevalent in the entertainment industry.

The number of people opting for a shaved head look is indeed growing these days. This is true with men who have a receding hairline, as well as those who don’t.

What is the reason behind this? Is this a new trend in men's hairstyle? Some would say yes, others would say no.

After all, it has been around for a while that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly how it started and for how long it will continue to be that way.

Hide Balding or Just Look Sexy with Shaved Head

There are several famous celebrities out there best known for the shaved head look, such as Andre Agassi, Vin Diesel, Michael Jordan, Bruce Willis, to name a few. This particular hair trend is definitely acceptable these days in various settings.

Acquiring a shaved head is one way to counteract the balding effect on men with their hair eventually falling out as they grow old. Thus, instead of hiding from this particular condition, it is one way to ensure you remain fashionable and develop the kind of look that you would want for yourself.

It also exhibits a rugged personality that makes it even more promising to shave head instead of living with a balding condition. Most men who prefer a shaved head consider being bald as aesthetically pleasing. Indeed, a lot of men like the more masculine feel that a shaved head gives them. It brings out that sharp and intimidating look not achieved with other kinds of hairstyle.

It is also a practical style for men because it saves them some time from daily grooming routine. They just basically leave it as it is, go to work or a party without ever having that early-morning look. Practically no bad hair days!

Getting a shaved head is also more affordable than other more complex hairstyles. Imagine if you had to cut your hair every other week, then you could potentially save a lot of money with every trip to the hair stylist.

These are undoubtedly practical reasons for having a shaved head.

How to Shave Head

Now that you have decided to shave your head, you can give it a go and get it done. It might appear to be intimidating for first-timers but it is actually quite easy. You can even do it yourself if you want. There are a few steps involved in turning your hairy scalp into a clean one. Also, it is important to be careful in taking each step as you can inflict wounds to yourself in the process.

Start by trimming down your hair to make it easier to shave your head. You can use a pair of scissors for this or hair clippers can do the job as well. There is no need to cut it perfectly, just aim to keep the hair short enough for ease of shaving. If possible, make sure you wet your hair before you begin to shave your head. This will make your hair softer and allow the shaver to glide smoothly on your scalp. A shaving lubricant is also useful to achieve a better shaved head result.

"I shaved my head about 15 years ago and the first time I shaved it, I started running my hand through my hair and it was very therapeutic." - Vin Diesel

“Well, no. I was getting into trouble messing around with it for roles. So one night I went home, cut it down with a pair of scissors and then got in the bath and shaved it all off. I've never looked back.” - Richard O’ Brien

"Shaving my head was a millennium ritual, to not let it pass as just another New Year's Eve. A lot has happened to me in the last couple of years, personally and spiritually. I wanted to mark it for myself." - Joan Jett

"Though it's a small price to pay, shaving my head has opened more doors than I ever thought possible." - Michael Rosenbaum

"Having shaved my head for the role put a spotlight on me." - Persis Khambatta

This is an interesting Hub. I must say the shaved head is not exclusive to men. The first time I shaved my head I was in my early 20's and have done so several times over the years. Most recently a couple years ago. I love the freedom of not having to worry about how my hair looks and the issue of having to mess with it everyday , trying to cover my balding area;It is freeing.Plus over the years I have suffered severe burns from a Vidal Sasson curling iron, the water in the cylinder was boiling hot when it was prayed on my head. The women of my biological family tend to also get bald places in the head. I think it is called female pattern balding or Alapecia,It is very unpleasant and embarassing. So shaving my head allows me to save face.I see more and more women these days who chose to shave their heads and it actually looks good. Thanks for writing this Hub. It gave me the courage to talk about my own issue with unwanted hair thinning

I took my first shaved head at 16. I did it myself and it soon became my favoured style. The shine and healthy glow is the best part for me. Nice hub for all the glowers out there. Voted up and interesting.
