My older daughter, who is 3 years old, just recently started pre-school was given a calendar with a list of colored clothing she would need to wear for the next 2 months. My assumption on this is that they will be learning their colors through these colored themed days. However, I now had to search out the seven separate colored themed outfits (yes seven!).

This is a lot of clothing and if you are not familiar with shopping for children, where would you begin? Even though I am expert at children’s clothing shopping being a mother of two small girls (16 months apart), I still spent a considerable amount of time shopping for these items, why because I was searching for the best prices, as well as the nicest clothing options too.

This truly is all all about getting the best bang for my buck and reminds me of all the advice on Frugal Living given out so generously by Billybuc.

So where did I begin? Here I will list and give a breakdown on the best stores to indeed shop for children’s clothing now and all year long (especially in time for this year's holiday season shopping too!).

Source

1. The Children’s Place

Honestly this one is no brainer. Look at the title, which pretty much sums it up. This store is a store for and dedicated to Children from infant stage to elementary school age kids too. The more you frequent this store, the more one saves. They are constantly generating 20% coupons if you are a valued shopper, as well as if you have the “Place Card” and use it to pay, you get either 5% or 10% extra off. Also, it would seem that if you are a “Black Friday Shopper” (the annual kickoff to the holiday shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving), this store gives its shoppers on this day 30% off their merchandise and then you are also allowed to use your regular 20% off coupons, plus the extra 5% or 10% on your Place Card too, so the discounts on this one day alone are totally worth it. Last year, I did take advantage of this sale and got my younger daughter a whole wardrobe for under $35 (she is actually born right around this time of year so I had gift certificates to use there).

2. Old Navy

This store has clothes for the whole family (infants and kids of all age included too) at a discounted price to begin with. Then if you are a Gap Card member (The Gap owns this company), you get all sorts of coupons, such as 20% - 25% off, plus every few months they also they run a Friends and Family Weekend, where you are afforded 30% off. You need to read your coupons and e-mails, because they have specials and sales frequently. Being that I often shop here, I read one of my e-mails like I mentioned and even scored bathing suits this past summer one Saturday morning (a limited one day sale) for $6 each for my girls. Truly a great deal and again it pays to keep up to date with your correspondence from them.

Source

3. Target

Target also has clothing for the whole family and often runs sales, but they have a weekly circular, which will tell you everything you need to know. Even if you buy something and it goes on sale in the following week, you can have the price adjusted, as long as you keep your receipt as proof of purchase. The other nice bonus of shopping at Target is “The Red Card”, which if used on purchases will allow you 5% off each and every purchase. Also, on some sales, you may get gift cards to use for future purchases. These deals are run on diapers, wipes and even formula, which I used many at time over the last few years, but now am only down to diapers and wipes for my younger daughter, but still the sales are always a help. Plus, they also send coupon books from time to time for extra savings on your Target purchases.

Source

4. Babies R Us

This store is where it truly starts for mom, when they first are pregnant and planning a shower for their registry. So many a moms still do shop here even as their babies are indeed growing for baby items, as well as clothing for their babies and then toddler aged kids too. This store also has sales and sends out monthly flyers with promotions and coupons. Also if you are a frequent shopper, they have a rewards program that as you spend more, you receive coupons for further savings too. I have to be honest and tell you I have not shopped here as much now that my girls are in the pre-school and toddler aged too, but have switched over to their sister store, Toys R Us (for toys of course). But still Babies R Us is a great store for moms to shop in for their kids clothing needs.

Source

5. Kohl’s

Kohl’s is more of a department store that is for the whole family. This store also has a weekly advertisement with sales and specials. They also afford Kohl’s Cash, which pretty much means that for so much money you spend, you get money back. An example of this is for every $50, you spend you get back another $10. This is a store, I seem to frequent more around the holiday time and seem to get better cash back deals around this time as well, but those in my family who do shop there for kids do swear by this store.

Summing It Up...

So back to the original dilemma of trying to find those colored shirts. Which store was able to afford me the best for the price. Believe it or not, it was Children’s Place and Old Navy came in second here. However, I did make a day of shopping for these colored item clothing and was at all of these stores at one point in this one day. These stores all did have good deals, but for what I needed and the price, I have to be honest and tell you Children’s Place was by far the best out of the lot. And by the way, I was told on the down low that, they will indeed be running their Black Friday Sale, so I am truly a happy camper on this one.

Thanks Linda and we also have a store called Once Upon a Child that has used, but barely worn clothes for a very cheap discount. Didn't include here only, because I was trying to stick with brand new, but couldn't agree with you more about getting that kind of bargain. Thanks seriously for sharing and you couldn't have been more right if you tried!!

Great ideas Janine! I shop at all of these stores, Babies R Us the least. I hit the clearance racks first...Old Navy, Target and Kohls practically give their clothes away if you are lucky enough to find the sizes you need. I prefer getting lucky at yard sales. Barely worn kids clothing for $1.00 is awesomeness! :)

Tammy, I am so glad that I am not alone in looking for the best buys in clothing. I too am unemployed and used to shop at Gap and Gymboree too. This morning my husband's cousin even sent me coupons for Gymboree in my e-mail, but didn't even bother looking, because their base prices are just ridiculous. So I very much agree with you there. I am also find I buy larger sizes at The Children's Place for my kids too. Thank you so much for your comment, share, tweet and pin too :)

I have a 3 year old girl after raising 3 boys and I LOVE dressing her in nice clothes. I used to shop at Gap and Gymboree, but their prices are outrageous since I became unemployed. I agree that the Children's Place is the best place for kids clothes. They are super adorable and something is always on sale. I usually have a buy a size bigger there compared to other stores. Old Navy has excellent cute and durable clothing too. Great hub! Shared, tweeted, pinned!

Bruce, you just put a smile on my face. So true about going from something manly like Robert Mitchum to little girls clothes (you sound a lot like my husband). I am a lot like your wife and having two girls 16 months apart I do tend to dress them like twins (I also get asked quite often if they are indeed twins). As I write this they are wearing matching nightgowns from the Disney Store with Cinderella and Tinker Bell. So I can totally relate to your reply. Thank you seriously for your very thought out and thoughtful comment, as well as your votes too!!

Luckily my area has at least one of each of these stores....my wife and I seem to go to Target the most.....she loves to buy our two little girls twin outfits even though Samantha is 6 and Emily is 3....as I type this comment the are running around the house in their matching Minnie Mouse dresses.

My wife can never get out of the women's section at Kohls ....but as the hours pass in the store I usually end up in the kids section....and it seems we also leave with some Disney character pajamas.

The power of HubPages.....I went from a manly man hub on Robert Mitchum to a hub on little girls clothes shopping.....lol.

Voted up and useful and informative.

Mary, thank you for saying such lovely and nice things about my article. I knew others could most likely relate the stores I chose, especially The Children's Place. I too only have gotten more familiar with these stores after having my girls, but was hoping to pass a bit of my findings and knowledge on the help others. Thank you for all your continued kindness and votes too :)

As always you covered your subject well. The Children's Place was new to me when my grandson was born three years ago but that has certainly changed. You've picked stores that truly fit the bill!

Thanks and have a good day! :-)

Sasha, I just could never find anything that I loved for my girls at JC Penny's but know others who do love them, so I guess that is why I didn't include them, because I also am not as familiar with their promotions since barely have ever bought from them. I did however do the girls Christmas pictures last year with them. Anyway, thank you so much for your kindness and support, as well as votes and sharing too. Very much appreciated :)

Glimmer Twin Fan, my mother-in-law raves about Justice and shops for my 8 year old niece there and wasn't sure if they had my daughter's size yet being she is still in 3T, but may have to look into that now too that I have been hearing so much about that store. Thank you seriously for commenting, for the share and votes too!!

Useful hub Janine! It is really hard to find clothes for kids and even worse if you have to find specific colors. A cute store for girls is Justice around here. They have terrific sales and "bucks" that one gets from time to time. I did not know about the Target red card! I'll have to check into that. Shared and voted up

Thank you Michelle and appreciate your comments here. U can't help, but feel passionate about this having my kids, because clothes can definitely cost if you don't know where and how to shop for them. I mean kids outgrow clothes quite often, so paying full price is not really practically or an option when you are on a budget and that is why I wrote this for others who too are on a budget and want to at least be able to afford clothes for their kids or grandkids. Thank you again for the share and tweet too!!

Hi Nell, you are right about it being a pain to find just the right color and sizes too, so I do hope I have helped others who do have these stores available to them to shop in. I guess I take for granted that we have a few of these stores in just a half hour distance in a few different directions that not everyone may have them, but for those who I hope I have helped a bit. My mother-in-law and my mom both shop at many of these stores as well, even yesterday my mother-in-law was in the mall and came home for clothes for my kids and her other grandkids too from The Children's Place. They just seem to have the best deals and clothes at this point. Thank you again though, very much appreciated :)
