Silk Scarves and Shawls to Brighten Your Day

Updated on August 25, 2015

Ah, winter. A time when the trees lay exposed to the elements, the snow at their feet long turned grey by the dirt and slush splashed upon them by passing cars. The sun rarely seems to shine and the world takes on a dull grey hue. As December turns into drab January and even more dreary February, everyone needs to brighten up their life in whatever way is possible. Adding a splash of color to your wardrobe may be just the answer if you are going to avoid the mid-winter blues.

Ironically, winter is the time people seem to opt for dark and dreary colors. Out come the gloomy greys, the dismal browns and the ominous blacks. The material also adds to the sensation of an army of gloomy Guses. It is heavy and seems morbidly thick.

Such comprise one of several reasons why – for your spirit, for your life force - you need to invest in a magnificent hand painted silk shawl or hand-dyed silk scarf. The superb hues never fail to raise depressed morale while the delicate attractiveness of these splendid accessories induce a sensation of being indulged and feeling special – the perfect way to shake off the winter blahs.

If you want to ramp up the positive effects of wearing silk scarves and shawls, opt for those that depict flowers. These work on your sub-consciousness to remind you about spring being “just around the corner.”  You might want to select the most vivacious colors to lift your heart. Wear them indoors and outside for that added boost of positive feelings.

Yet, silk shawls and scarves are more than just pretty. They are practical. Do not let that delicate look deceive you. Silk is durable and very warm. Test it. Wrap it around your head or neck. Place it across your shoulders for added warmth. No matter how low the thermometer drops, you will feel cozy wearing a silk scarf or shawl.

You can accomplish this without adding another heavy layer. It is so easy to feel drab and unattractive under all those extra layers of clothing. Heavy, bulky clothing can make anyone look and feel fat. If you substitute some of those extra layers for silk, you can recapture that light sensation associated with the spring and summer months.

Silk scarves and shawls can also help you banish another bête noir of winter – the extra poundage gained from eating comfort food. Chocolate is a favorite raiser of spirits. Why not avoid all this by channeling your energy into other positive treats. Elect to purchase a hand-dyed silk scarf. It will make you feel as good about yourself as chocolate – without the weight gain. Buying a handmade 100% silk shawl or scarf will solve the winter blues while ensuring you do not go through spring and summer overweight depression.

Only some people can afford to avoid winter. If you cannot do so, defeat it and its blahs by indulging yourself in the wearing of a lavish and brilliantly hued silk scarf or shawl.
