Most Common Curls

The most common curls are those that are easy to achieve simply by taking any curling iron and tying your hair into it. There are many curling irons that you can purchase starting from affordable prices from Walmart, Shoppers Drugmart & other department stores. Then, there are the most expensive curling wands that can be found on brands online like, Zulily and Sephora to name a few.

You can achieve great results as long as you know the technique. Here is a step by step guide to getting curls from a curling iron, curling wand and hair straightener.

Step 1: Always prepare hair from frizz and split ends

If you came from a shower and your hair is super dry or frizzy, then you need to use a anti-frizz product that will smooth the hair before you start to curl them. A good product is Giovanni Frizz Be Gone Super-Smoothing Anti Frizz Hair Serum. I've used this many times and it never fails to impress me. It costs around $9-$12 CAD at any drugstore. It gives the hair shine and smoothness. Like the name says, it helps with controlling the frizz and dryness in your hair.

Take a small amount on your palm and rub your palm together and massage into your hair. Make sure you massage it from the scalp down to the bottom of the hair. Let it sit for 2-3 mins before you go to the next step.

Step 2: Apply a curling heat protector

It is really important to apply some sort of a heat protector into the hair before using any heated tools. This will help avoid the damage and fall out of hair in the long term. A really good product that I've used in the past is the Dessert Essence Coconut Hair Defrizzer and Heat Protector. This product also helps control the frizz in the hair while protecting them from the heat. It is a great product to moisturize your hair. It is a mixture of several coconut oil extracts to make the hair look healthy and shiny.

Curling Methods

Step 3: Curling the hair

Curling Iron using Middle to Bottom Method: The most common curls are those that start from the middle of the hair and go all the way down. These create small waves in the hair when brushed. This look can be defined as an everyday look because it's quick and easy.

Curling Iron using Bottom to Top Method: This method usually leaves hair with loose curls at the bottom of the hair. This is because most of the heat is used on the bottom hair. To apply this method, take your curling iron and star wrapping your hair from the bottom up until the top and leave it there for 30 seconds. Let go of the curling iron in the same position and you will notice small loose curls at the bottom.

Zigzag Method using a curling iron: I call this the Zigzag method because the hair look exactly like a form of a "Z" when you apply this method. In order to get this, you will take your curling iron and start curling hair from top to bottom and then pin up the curl on the top of your head. Remove the pin and brush the curl gently. You will get a "zigzag."

**There are numerous You Tube videos that teach you how to curl your hair. I am posting three that are really popular and are very easy to follow.**

Yes, this is a pic of my hair. I used the TRESemme Curling Wand to style my curls. The reason why you see more of the waves then curls is because they are brushed. It stayed this way for almost 2 days without shampoo.

Hair Curls Using Curling Wand & Straightner

I am not a huge fan of curling hair with a hair straightener. The main reason being is that I am still not very good at it. (laughs) I believe it takes a great deal of time for me to practice the process with a straightener, so I avoid it. However, I do love the curling wands. I currently use the TRESemme Curling Wand, and I have to be honest, I recently started to use it as a pro. One thing I did learn from using curling wands is that you have to use the same method throughout the sections of your hair otherwise your curls look super different from one another.

TRESemme styling wand is a really good investment. I purchased mine from Walmart when I first started to curl my hair. I did not wanted to invest in very high end tools, because I was a starter. This features 3 heat setting temperatures, 1 1/2 inch barrel, includes the heat resistant glove & mat, creates various curls, sample TRESemme shampoo and conditioner were also included. It came with a small catalog that gave instructions to do many curls/waves. I absolutely love this product. It is easy to work with, it gives beautiful and long lasting results, and the wand heats up really quickly on the very first setting. Leave the hair around the wand for 35 seconds and it gives you amazing curls. Refer to the pic on the right side for the curls effect from this.

Step 4: Final Touches and Setting Curls

Once you achieve your desired curls using your favorite and comfort methods, then you need to set your curls with a product that will make the curls look shiny, give volume to your hair and let the curls last long. Again, there is numerous variety of products in the store's today, I want to recommend products that will be part of your curling routine for the longest time.

One product that you can use to set the curls is the Dessert Essence Coconut Soft Curls Hair Cream. Be aware though. This product smells strong. It is infused with 5 different coconut and botanical oils that keeps the hair healthy and shiny. It also prevents the hair from any environmental damage. Plus, it works as a conditioner to moisturize your hair. It really defines curls. Currently, I use this all the time. One of my favorite setting creams to define my curls!

If you don't want to use anything that has coconut in it, then some other recommendations would be, Beautiful Curls Shea Butter & Rosemary Shining Curl Oil. This is also what I am using currently and I will repurchase it again once emptied. With a blend of Shea Butter and Rosemary oils, this moisturizes the hair and gives shine to the curls. This has all natural ingredients and is very lightweight.

Voila! This ends this article! How simple is this process? With some practice it takes me almost 30 minutes to complete my hair with the desired curls. By using all natural and organic products you are also taking care of your hair from all that heat damage. I will recommend styling your hair only on special occasions though.
