Some Common Skin Disorders- Prevention & Treatment

Updated on February 3, 2011

Innumerable external and internal factors including ageing, exposure to environmental elements, and a host of other factors lead to facial skin problems and skin problems on the other parts of the body. Some common skin flaws are the result of genetics, viruses, and other causes. Acquiring a little insight to the problems may help us to fix the problems in a significant way. Here we discuss about some common forms of skin problems, particularly about facial skin problems.

One of the most common forms of skin problems that teenagers generally seem to suffer. When the sebaceous glands become overactive and produce excess oil, follicles become plugged that result into blackheads and whiteheads. The growth of acne depends on certain factors such as diet, weather, temperature etc. One of the major steps towards acne prevention and acne breakouts is maintaining proper hygiene and keeping clean skin with proper face washing techniques.

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but they're most prominent on sun-exposed skin, such as the face, neck, hands and forearms when there is seen fold, ridge or crease in the skin. Sun exposure, smoking, and extreme dieting can hasten this effect, making skin look older than it is. Staying away from sun, quitting the habit of smoking as well as drinking more than sufficient water might help to stop the process of wrinkling.

Enlarged Pores

Due to excessive oil secretion by the sebaceous glands the pores get clogged and spoil the porcelain quality of the skin leaving the skin coarser.  If proper care is not taken, the pore will become larger and larger and may be easily clogged which in turns result into blackheads, pimples, discoloration and excessive sebum production. Facial treatment including deep pore cleansing treatment, microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, topical vitamin A treatment may help to minimize the problem.

Skin Texture

There are several environmental factors including wind, dirt, chemicals, arid climates, smoking and pollution which can cause the skin to appear rough blotchy, papery, dry, scaly, leathery and uneven. Collagen and Elastin are the proteins responsible for skin texture and are affected by diet, age, hormones, cosmetic treatments etc. Cleansing, Exfoliation, moisturizing and protecting the skin from sun are proposed by the skin specialists for this problem.

It is a natural part of skin’s healing process; nevertheless it can cause pain and inconvenience in the skin. The scarring areas of the skin seem different color from surrounding and it can result from virtually anything that damages the skin, from chicken pox to sports, injuries and surgery. Complete removal of scars is not possible, but these can be improved following some cosmetic techniques such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, collagen injections, fat transfer procedure. Laser scar removal is another excellent option for minimizing the appearance of scars caused by acne, surgery, or other factors.

Common warts are local growths in the skin caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). It can be seen almost anywhere on the body and can be a hideous and sometimes painful skin problem. Although warts do not cause that kind of harms but sometimes some strains of HPV lead other health risks like genital warts and cervical cancer. Home remedies, over-the-counter treatment and professional dermatological treatment might help to minimize the problem.

Dark Spots Under Eye

Lacks of sleep, fatigue, stress, imbalanced diet are associated with this kind of problem. In many cases, the darkened circles can be reversed by resolving the underlying cause, or they can be concealed with cosmetics. That’s why proper sleep and avoiding extra strains on eye should be taken into account for to prevent the problem. Sometimes Dermatologists suggest taking almonds in order for removing dark circles under the eyes.

A skin disease of adults (more often women) with fair skin in which blood vessels of the face enlarge resulting in a facial redness and swelling. Sun and wind exposure, hot weather, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and hot baths are supposed to be responsible for this skin problem. Swings in temperature from hot to cold or cold to hot can also cause a flare-up of rosacea. In some cases, photodynamic therapy can be very successful in reducing redness and the appearance of blood vessels.

Although some other problems like moles, birth marks and age-spots which are almost harmless, many people seek treatment for removing these completely.

More or less every people experience skin problem at a certain stage of life. But people, specifically from the urban area where the environment is being polluted severely, are now very conscious about their skin health. Therefore a lot of beauty salons and spas are developed with a variety of services in favor of the skin care for man and woman in NYC as wells as in the whole US.
