Stingray Tattoo Designs

Stingray tattoo designs can come in a variety of different variations and styles. Just like other animal tattoos, the stingray tattoo can hold symbolic meaning to those who have it. The stingray tattoo is a popular choice in the Polynesian culture, but not considered to be a mainstream choice.

The most popular stingray designs are done as tribal tattoos. This design portrays the stingray done in the style of tribal art. Tribal tattoos are popular among the tribes of the Pacific Islands. Instead of an overall meaning, these tribal tattoos may represent a person's rank or status in the tribe. Someone may consider such a tattoo if they feel that they share traits or have a special connection with the stingray. In some tribes, the stingray may represent some achievement.

The stingray is a special creature and has a number of features that make it excellent at both hunting and outwitting other hunters. The stingray can hide in the underwater sands, mainly from sharks. The stingray can cover up with sand and lay still. Most sharks can sense prey in the sand based on movement, even breathing. Because of its ability to hide, the stingray can be a symbol of protection.

Stingray tattoo designs can come in any shape, color, size, or posture. Small stingray tattoo designs have little detail and size, but when done correctly, it can be a stunning design. If you want a popular tattoo design, I'd suggest a mid-sized tattoo or large stingray tattoo. The bigger the stingray, the better. Most stingray tattoos portray the stingray alone without a background. Personally, I think blue and black ink look good together along with light shades of blue. That combination really sets the black ink off, so I prefer a little light blue shading on my stingray tattoos.

Stingray Tattoo Meanings

The stingray tattoo can have any number of meanings. Some meanings can be positive while others have a more negative connotation. Remember that, in the end, your tattoo represents what you want it to. In saying that, below are the meanings of the stingray tattoo.

  • Emotion
  • Protection
  • Adaptation
  • Gracefulness
  • Peacefulness
  • Friendliness
  • Sensitivity
  • Danger
  • Toxicity
  • Agility
  • Speed
  • Stealth

Stingray Tattoo Designs And Variations

Stingray tattoo designs can come in a number of variations. As you read above, stingrays done in a tribal style are one of the most popular options. Stingray tattoos can also portray the stingray in a more realistic way. Some stingray tattoos can portray the stingray as a cartoon, but those are pretty rare. Stingray tattoos may include water, turtles, bubbles, starfish, octopus, fish, sharks, dolphins, seaweed, plants, or coral.

In most stingray tattoo designs, the stingray is usually portrayed alone. Stingray tattoos are usually done in black and gray ink, with appropriate shading to make the stingray appear three-dimensional. Some stingray tattoos may show the stingray using its poisonous barb. I have seen designs that show the stingray piercing a heart, which may be something to consider. Stingrays may also be the back piece to a larger tattoo. Make sure that you take the time to view all the different stingray tattoos in this article. That will give you an idea of what is available. Plus, you may pick up on some ideas of your own.

For women, I would suggest adding elements and symbols that soften the image, such as a flower, seashell, or beautiful ocean water. I would suggest a small stingray tattoo design for women. Men probably want a larger tattoo design. But men should also keep in mind that they can add symbols and elements as well. In the end, just make sure you get the tattoo that you want!

Before Getting Inked

There are a few things that you should remember before getting tattooed. Just as you are now, make sure that you take the time to research your tattoo. Make sure you completely understand what your tattoo represents. Don't rush to get inked! If you are not sure about a tattoo, don't get it! If you're having second thoughts, give it more time. Men and women that rush to get tattooed usually have regrets about their decision later on down the road. You don't want to make this same mistake. Take your time, do your research, and make sure you are completely sure about your choice.

      Another one!

As a kid, 13, I began diving in the Red Sea when we moved to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. On one of my first dives, we saw several of these little guys and I was fascinated by them. I've seen them as small as 9 or 10 inches (wingspan) and Manta's with 8 feet! They are pure poetry in motion in the water.
