Tattoo On Your Spine

Updated on July 16, 2008

Looking to get a tattoo down my spine

Okay, so I am seriously looking into getting a phrase (words only) written down my spine on my back. The tattoo would be between 15-17" long, simple lettering with one word in bold at the end of the spine. Clearly, this is going to hurt, I know enough to realize that. I have a tattoo on my wrist directly over my main veins and I got through that okay, so hopefully the spine will be similar and not too much worse. My question is: does anyone know if there are any negative side effects to getting a tattoo on your spine? i.e. permanent numbness or spasms??

Thanks :)

I have a biomechanical spine tat that goes down pretty much the entire length of my back. The needles on the tattoe gun are meant to only go through a certain number of layers of the skin not all the way into your body. I have never heard of anyone getting any sort of nerve damage from a tattoo. The spine. especially towards the upper and lower back are said to be very sensitive, but I didn't have any problems with mine at all. Everyone is different. I would go ahead and do it.

I have several tattoos, including one on my ribs and my wrist. As a woman, I can tell you that I personally only had pain with my ribs, and it was bearable. The one down my spine was much less painful, but if you're going to go for it, pain is just part of the process.

I also have tattoos on many parts of my body, the Foot hurt, the ones on the back were fine, spine I actually fell asleep through. Wrist didn't hurt it more felt weird. If you want it then go for it, make sure it means something ot you now and forever and the pain will be well worth it :)

I have a full back tattoo that I got over the course of 10 years, adding an element of the overall design each time. The largest portions over the scapulas were searingly painful. The smaller parts were more bearable. I do sometimes get some tingling in the tattooed areas that I don’t get elsewhere, but it isn’t painful or frequent.

So I got my first tattoo when I was 18, its abt 10cm, and its on my left side of my hip, like partially on the side of my tummyy and my hip bone, seriously it wasn't as bad as I thought a tattoo would be, its a kind of scratching, semi burning annoying pain, but not insanely sore..the outline was sore but the colouring was better, and when it was done over my hip bone, it was bit uncomfi. I want a tat down my spine, like vic beckhams, but I think that I may not be able to handle the pain, any advice?

I just got a bible verse with a dove on the upper half of my back, and the spine didn't hurt anymore than the rest of it, but the whole tat was bearable.

The epidural thing is a myth. A healed tattoo is fixed into the skin and cannot enter the spinal fluid. Also, just because you're having kids does not mean you need an epidural. There are other methods of relieving pain. If you have a new tattoo ( which you shouldn't get if you're pregnant) the anesthesiologist may just want to put the needle through your spine in an area with no ink to avoid scarring your nice tattoo. Also, I have never heard of anyone having problems with a spinal tattoo. Tattoos just enter a few layers of skin and do not affect nerves or anything.

I have tattoo on rib cage, it wasn't paintfull at all maybe just a little bit in the middle but that one he did in the end. I want one tattoo down to all my spine but all the coments I have read so far it just scared me because it supposed to be very very paintfull.

I have two tattoos, one of which is very small and behind my ear (didn't hurt at all) and the other one is on my upper spine. It's a girl holding onto like 7 balloons and it's all shaded.. honestly it hurt so bad, not only because of the needles but because it was messing with my nerves while I was getting it, I honestly started tingling in my fingers and found it very hard to relax my muscles. Yeah, the pain is different for everyone and yeah, I'm a girl - take it as you want, but I wouldn't get it done again and I absolutely love everything about my tattoo, so that's saying a lot.

Ok, ppl stop comparing a wrist tattoo to a spinal tattoo! They're nothing like each other. I've had my wrist tattooed and my upper and lower spine also. The wrist isn't shit, but the spine hurts like a bitch. I definitely do not recommend a spine tattoo unless you can take the pain.

I have a spine tattoo and it didn't hurt after the first set of letters! It actually was better than expected! I've had it a month now tho and it's still a little sore when pressure is applied!?
