Updated on July 27, 2017

Teeth Whitening Products May Be Harmful To Teeth

As you know there are many (OTC), over-the-counter teeth whitening products on the market today to choose from such as: whitening strips, gel tray systems, toothpastes, mouth-rinses and chewing gum.

But, before you purchase one of these product you must keep in mind, 1.) The thicker the enamel, the more whiter your teeth will look. 2.) Some of these products can protect the tooth enamel against acid erosion because, once the tooth enamel wears away, it is gone for good. 3), These products can also fight plaque and gingivitis for a healthier and cleaner mouth.

And before you begin using the teeth whitening product consult with a dentist to help you achieve that beautiful white smile you want and he can also determine what treatment is best for you to use, especially if you have restorations, crowns or heavy stains on your teeth.

Some of the side effects from teeth whitening products are: teeth sensitivity, irritation to gum tissues in affected areas, inflamed gums, irreversible teeth damage, sloughing of the gums, lips and cheeks.

If the following side effects should occur be sure to call your dentist or schedule a appointment for him to exam your gums and teeth before you continue using the product.

Tips:

1. Teeth whitening products can "lighten" most of your teeth but, some teeth will never be the whitest or brightest. But, they will be improved.

2. To contain the whiten of your teeth you will need to eat foods that can help promote the flow of saliva that can neutralize the acids that cause your teeth to yellow. And you should eat foods that are high in calcium to help keep them white.

3. If you are a smoker, you need to quit smoking to help prevent your teeth from yellowing.
