The Luxurious Benefits of Body Oils

The Times once listed body oils as one of the top 25 body care products to own. I rate it as one of the top five.

Body Oils in Aromatherapy

Body oils bless your skin better than the finest lotions. They moisturize, but with a therapeutic twist. Body oils are composed of essential oils, and within these oils are what aromatherapy specialists call "the essence of a plant". It can improve you on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.

Body oils are similar to massage oils. When a masseuse picks the right oil for his or her client, there are a few main attributes to consider:

  • How the oil smells
  • How the oil spreads
  • How the oil is absorbed

Body oils are very similar in that nature.

  • Certain smells calm or invigorate you
  • All oils spread smoothly
  • Oil, unlike lotion, is quickly absorbed into the skin.

If you currently use a body oil, then you must be using it to target a specific need. If your oil is used to reduce muscle soreness, for example, you may prefer it during your sensual massage over their massage oils. So during your next massage appointment, don't be afraid to take your favorite body oil .

Body Oils vs Lotions

Body Oils or Body Lotions?

Personally, I have always used lotions to moisturize and scent my skin. Most of us do! But lotions don't quench your skin the way an oil ca. Instead, they rub off within hours and leave your skin dry. Body oils, on the other hand, soak into your skin quickly to keep you moisturized all day.As someone who suffers from dry skin, I don't want a moisturizer that lasts a few hours. Especially not during the winter months.

There's no need to give up your favorite body lotion, unless you suffer from dry skin (for the latter, body oils are highly recommended), but use a body oils during the winter months. You'll see a great difference.

Another crucial element in body oils is that they enhance the overall health of your skin. Your skin glows in the end! Not many lotions can do that. Inexpensive lotions, especially, cannot assist in moisturizing your skin. They sit on the surface without being fully absorbed.

While some may shy away from oils, thinking it will leave their skin greasy, that's not the case. Again, oils are absorbed very quickly into your skin, so you don't have to worry about staining your favorite clothes.

No Two Are Alike --Types of Body Oils

Essential oils are perfect for improving your physical and mental well-being.

  • Lavender is used to calm the mind, body and spirit.
  • Citrus is meant to uplift, restore and re-energize, but also helps to calm the mind in nervous situations.
  • Mint keeps you energized and stimulates the mind, easing mental tiredness.
  • Citrus & Lavender, when combined, soothes nervous energy and stress by calming the body and mind.

All body oils contain essential oils, but not all are centrally based from them. Let's use the Muscle Pain Massage oil shown above for example. This oil consists of creamy vanilla mixed with cinnamon, nutmeg, black Pepper and tea to soothe sore muscles, joints and arthritis.

No two are alike. When purchasing your body oil, first look for one that has a short list and simple ingredients. Personally, I stay away from name brand products for their suspicious ingredients and high prices. It's best to buy a natural oil with ingredients you know.

Next, pick the scent to improve a specific mood. For me, sleepless nights are a hassle. I benefit from lavender based body oils because they calm the mind before bedtime. I rub a small amount over my body and then take an exuberant whiff for a good night sleep. Others may need energy during the day, and will benefit from a citrus based body oil.

When and How to Use

We all suffer from different ailments that body oils heal therapeutically. Take a look at the list of essential oils above and assess which is best for you. Whenever you suffer from neck soars, rub the oil between your palms and massage that spot for a few minutes. If you can't stay energized during the day, rub a citrus-based oil over your body in the morning, and take it with you to school or to work. You don't even have to apply it a second time. Simply taking a whiff can refresh your mind.
