3D Tattooing

3D Tattoos have become more and more popular. Each tattoo is unique artwork! This new trend is not only popular with the younger generation but with those who are of older generations as well. Tattooing has been around for thousands of years, but has gotten much more sophisticated in recent years.

One has to remember that a tattoo is for life unless you are willing to spend a large sum of money and endure some pain to have it removed at a later point in time.

Most 3D designs are created in two dimensions, not three. The 3D effect, or illusion, comes from the shading of the artwork much like a painting, to create a depth look, or real life look. This is the most popular and easy method to have a 3D tattoo done for yourself. This is also the most common type of tattooing with the tattoo artists.

There is another level to 3D tattoos. These are actually raised tattoos, where various parts of the tattoo is physically raised, not just shaded. This is done by injecting hyaluronic acid under the skin where the tattoo has already been drawn. The solution can be applied to specific areas of the tattoo for enhancement. Using this method, a contoured 3D design is created where parts of the tattoo is raised above the normal level of the skin by approximately two millimeters.

The drawback of this method of 3D tattooing is that the hyaluronic acid will deplete itself over time, leaving you with simply a regular tattoo. The skin will gradually smooth out. The 3D effect of using the hyaluronic acid will last from six months to a year, but can vary among individuals and the way that their body metabolizes the hyualuronic acid.

Finding an artist who will use the hyaluronic acid method of tattooing is rather hard to find as well. This practice is not as common among the artists, and requires a lot of skill and training.

However you achieve that 3D tattoo, one thing is for certain, they are wonderful works of art, sure to provoke talk and looks, especially the sexy tattoos!

Tattoo Care

There will need to be care taken of any new tattoo work you have done as well. Below is a basic guideline.

On day one you will need to do the following:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Gently remove the bandage, wetting under water or in the shower if needed due to it sticking.
  • Using warm water along with a very mild soap, gently wash the tattoo using your hand.
  • Remove the soap by rinsing the tattoo well with warm water.
  • Using a paper towel, gently pat the tattoo dry.
  • Using a fingertip or two, apply lotion or ointment to the tattoo, rubbing in well, but gently.
  • Use a paper towel to blot the excessive oil or ointment.
  • Note: Tattoo should not be greasy after this. Use small amounts of lotion or oil.

During the following days, 2 through 14, you will need to care for the tattoo as follows:

You will notice that a new tattoo will start peeling and flaking and small pieces of colored skin will be evident in the shedding. Your tattoo may not look as crisp as the first day or two and will even look hazy at times. No worries, as this is normal, and should mellow out in two to three weeks. On a daily basis, morning and night, continue to wash/dry the tattoo as instructed in day one. You will need to apply lotion or oil four to six times a day, always using the "small" amount and working it in well.

Thanks for the info, there are some truly phenomenal artists out there that can do work that blows the mind. I have a lot of tattoo's and I would never have any type of acid injected into my skin to achieve the 3D look. I'd be much more psyched if the artist was able to achieve that on their own. Thanks for the great read!

It looks like the 3D tattoos tend toward the creepier looks. That one with the bullet holes was cute, and all of the gashes. It's good to see that they are keeping it classy!
