Tone Up with Skecher Shape Ups and Easy Tone Reeboks

Updated on April 23, 2012

There seems to be new trend developing in women's shoes. Have you see the Sketcher Shape Ups? They are sneakers with huge thick soles that claims to promote many health benefits. Earlier this year, Reebok introduced a shoe, the Easy Tone Reebok, also promoting health benefits.  Will these shoes be the next big trend of the upcoming fitness season?  Let's take a look at what others say about both shoes.

The Skecher Shape Ups

The website for the Skecher Shape ups makes the following boasts. These shoes promote weight loss. Skecher Shape ups improve posture and tones muscles and they reduce stress on the knees and the ankles. Their motto? Shape up while you walk! or Get in shape without setting foot in a gym.

The concept behind the development of the shoe is to force the muscles to work. The shoe is meant to simulate walking in the sand. This action is meant to make a whole set of different muscles workout while walking on pavement. The claim is that this shoe can make your calf muscles bigger and tone buttocks. The heel is rounded, thus making you walk heel to toe to get maximum muscle workout.

Did you know Skecher Shape Ups also come in many beautiful sandal styles?

These shoes claim to work your muscles while providing maximum shock absorption. Below is an instructional video on how to walk in your Sketchers Shape Ups

The shoe itself does not look pleasing to the eye in my old fashioned opinion. On the other hand it does seem like a very sturdy shoe as it has four soles. The bottom of the shoe has pods that act as mini balance balls to help with stability. I understand the concept about working out other muscles in your legs, but what If I wanted to run in this shoe? Or exercise?

The Shape up shoe comes in several fashionable styles. Not only is there a sneaker but there is also a Physically Fit Mary Jane Fitness shoe. For the summer months there is a Sketchers women's Shape up Sleek Fitness walking shoe with a strap. Also available is a desert shoe.

The Shape Up shoe is also available for men

Reebok Easy Tone shoes

Reebok's easy tone logo states "Get a Better butt, get better legs, get Easytone". Reebok also boasts how their Tone up made Oprah's O list! Reebok Easy Tone shoes offer an instability that forces us to use other muscles as well. There claims are that by wearing these shoes you will receive 11% more toning in your legs and 28% more toning in your glutes. These shoes do not have as thick a sole as the Sketchers. You do not have to practice the heel toe method of walking, but you do have to get used to balancing yourself!

They seem to be a little more fashionable to me anyway as I am not a fan of the thick heel.

A really cool feature of this product is that the website allows you to customize your own shoe. If you are going to pay over a 100 dollars for it you might as well get what you want. Reebok allows you to change the colors of certain parts of the shoe on their website!

Easy Tones are available for only women.

And they are available in sandals too. The easy Tone Flip sandal is easy on and easy off. The flip flop simulates walking on sand so it gives your glutes and calves every step. It comes in several fashionable colors. The Reebok Womens Easy Tone Flip flop is very popular shoe. Customer reviews rave about how comfortable this shoe is. Other customers comment on how cushy and true to size they are. If you are looking for a easy to wear summer sandal, this may be it.

If you are looking for walking shoe then consider the Easy Tone Go Outside II walking shoe.  This shoe claims to give you 28% more of a workout on the glutes and 11% more workout on the calves.  It provides ultra light support with its breathable mesh fabric. This shoe contains a molded sock liner that keeps the sweat away form your feet. Another nice feature in the Easy Tone Go Outside walking shoe is the two balance pods that offer stability.

MBT's

MBT is another shoe that boasts health benefits. Nicknamed the anti shoe, MBT stands for Masai Barefoot Technology, They also have the same kind of heel that simulates walking in the sand. These shoes are endorsed by celebrities and athletes and seem to cost more. MBT's come in men and women's sizes all kinds of styles. They are made by Footwear inc and are inspired by Swiss Masai design.

There are several styles of MBT's that boast the barefoot technology. One of them is the MBT Tunisha. This shoe states that it can strengthen the buttocks, feet, legs, stomach and even the back. The Tunisha shoe is available in leather for extra durability.

Another shoe that is similar is the MBT Kamba Woman's fitness shoe. The style is similar except this is more of a dress shoe. The Kamba comes with a lot of features. The 3 D mesh lining ensures the your feet will be kept dry. This shoe also promises to strengthen your body. It is also made with a brown leather to increase durabiltiy.

And yes there are sandals too!  The MBT Women's Tabia shoes come in colors black and white.  Just slide your feet right into this fun and playful shoe. it is made of leather.  It is made  with an adjustable instep strap so you can get just the right fit.

Reviews

For the Skecher Shape ups, many people have said they can feel a difference right away, when they take their first step. Several review have stated people prefer the Reebok Easy Tone because they look more like a shoe than the Sketchers do.

A study completed on the Today show shows women give the shoes high marks. It was difficult for the women to get used to the shoes at first. Because they offer instability the women felt they may at first fall. However at they got used to them. The shoes made them tired because the women wer using their muscles more. It was challenging for the women who used the sketchers and the MVT's because they haver to learn how to walk from heel to toe.

Personal Testimonial

A few weeks after writing this hub I noticed a friend of mine was wearing the Skechers Shape UPs. She is a nurse so she is always on her feet. I asked her what she thought about the shoes. She commented on how she really loved the shoes. She loved how the shoe fits right up into the arch of her foot and offers wonderful support. When I asked her if she felt unsteady on her feet she stated at first you did, but you get over it really quick. She stated the curve on the back of the shoe would make you feel like you are going to fall if you stood on your heels. Otherwise it is a very comfortable shoe. When I asked if she lost weight she stated she did not, however when she wen tot shave her legs the other day she noted how hard her calf muscles were! She really believes the shoes help her " Shape up"

I have never tried these shoes, so I approach the theory with a bit of skepticism. I believe the shoes can indeed help your muscle tone and increase your activity level. But nothing takes the place of a good workout. It is hard to believe you can get into shape by just wearing shoes. Remember Dr Scholls Sandals that were also to promote fitness? Didn't those just turn out to be a fad as well? I guess time will tell!

I love my shape-ups. I teach school five days a week and started having heel pain two years ago. I purchased a pair and have not had any pain since. I wear them everyday and have three pair. A person does need to take time to get used to them. I would like to see more sandle styles.

I tried these shape ups and hated them. I returned them the day after I bought them. I always felt like I was walking uphill, which is probably good, but when you are running around doing errands, it's annoying.

I am wearing Skechers Shape-Ups for more than a year now and also wrote a review on them. I love them, they really tone your muscles, they do. You will not lose weight just from wearing Shape-Ups (it is not a panacea), but together with right eating habits and exercise routine you will benefit from wearing this type of shoes.

You can NOT run in Shape-Ups! Don't even try, it is not safe.
