Top 5 Kits from Benefit Cosmetics

Updated on October 29, 2014
Smart enough not to pay full price for your products, Benefit.
Smart enough not to pay full price for your products, Benefit.

I might stray from time to time for a product or two, but Benefit will always be my favorite overall makeup brand. From the packaging to the variety and, most importantly, to the incredible quality of the products, Benefit pays meticulous attention to make sure every item is top-notch. Of course, with that kind of quality, there's a trade-off; if you're not careful, you'll end up paying through your carefully contoured nose.

But there's a trick to Benefit. You can get one of their makeup kits, which consist of large sample sizes of a handful of products, for the same price or only slightly more as one full size product. Buy kits to start, and if you adore a product, buy the full-size...but you might not even need to. Like I said, the samples are big.

Here's a list of the top 5 Benefit kits, based on the number of products included, the quality and usefulness of those products, this size of the samples, and, of course, the value for your money.

(Also, did you know the twin sisters who founded Benefit flipped a coin to decide whether to start a makeup company or a croissant cafe? As much as I love croissants, I'm glad the coin landed on tails!)

#1 Sizzling Six Set

Full list of products included:

- 0.25 oz The POREfessional mini
- 0.14 oz BADgal lash mini
- 0.22 oz Ultra plush lip gloss mini in dandelion
- 0.1 oz Dandelion mini
- 0.08 oz Benetint mini
- 0.25 oz Girl Meets Pearl mini

First up is a set with Benefit's top six bestselling products. For $36, you get pore minimizer (think BB cream, except it's been around longer than BB creams have), mascara, lip gloss, blush, lip and cheek stain, and face primer.

And yes, they're smaller than the full products, but for most of these, that doesn't matter. A short tube of mascara just doesn't run out noticeably faster. Mascaras should be tossed after 6 months anyway to avoid nasty eye infections, and a mini-mascara will last you that long. Benefit has two different mascaras, BADgal and They're Real! They're Real! is their newest one, and it's already overtaken BADgal as a bestseller. Not that there's anything wrong with BADgal--to be honest, you're not going to find a low-quality Benefit product, you're just not--but They're Real! is magnificent. I lost mine for a time and didn't want to buy a whole new kit when I still had the rest of it or shell out $23 for a single tube, and none of my other mascaras could fill the void. And I have a lot, because I have a makeup problem.

But don't worry. I found my They're Real!, so we're okay.

A mini-blush? That's fine. Who ever used up a whole thing of blush? The blush in this kit is Dandelion, which is a pretty light pink. Something to note: this kit does not come with a brush. You can buy one separately, of course, and Benefit's brushes are great quality, but so are the brushes in e.l.f.'s Studio line (if you've read my other hubs, you know by now--look for the black handles for e.l.f.'s best brushes) and they're $25 cheaper.

Benetint, the product that started it all, is a magical, rose-scented liquid stain for cheeks and lips, and all it takes is a teeny drop, so you're not going to run out of this either. And even if you go a little crazy and slather your cheeks in it, so many kits come with Benetint that, if you're anything like me, you'll end up having six of the little bottles lying around at any given time. I've been wearing Benetint for nine years and I've never bought a full size.

Products you might want full-sized? The POREfessional, the BB cream-like primer that feels like velvet going on and makes your pores freakin' disappear, you'll find yourself reaching for every day. (Even though it comes out of the tube opaquely beige, it goes on pretty sheer; the product looks way too dark for me until it blends in like the magic potion it is.) But a full size of it is thirty dollars. You might as well buy this kit again and also get a refill of Girl Meets Pearl, a gorgeous, subtley pinky primer that will work for any skin color, I promise.

Or, buy a different kit. Because as you'll see, chasing your favorite products to a different kit can get you new products you hadn't even considered, for the same price you would have paid for the full. For example...

#2 You Go Gals

Full List of Products:

- 0.25 oz The POREfessional mini

-0.25 oz Girl Meets Pearl mini

-0.25 oz That Gal mini

Want more POREfessional? More Girl Meets Pearl? Get them, along with That Gal, a primer similar to Girl Meets Pearl but in a warmer tone (I like That Gal for day and Girl Meets Pearl for night) for $13.50. Better than $30 for a full-size of one, right?

Each of which, by the way, is .75 oz. You're getting the exact same amount of product here for less than half the price, and you get three different playthings instead of one. Pretty cool.

#3 B.Right Radient Skincare 6 Piece Intro Set

Full List of Products:

- Foamingly Clean Facial Wash (0.3 oz.)
- Refined Finish Facial Polish (0.3 oz.)
- Moisture Prep Toning Lotion (0.3 fl. oz.)
- Triple Performing Facial Emulsion SPF 15 PA++ (0.3 US fl. oz.)
- Total Moisture Facial Cream (0.1 oz.)
- It's Potent! Eye Cream (0.1 oz.)

Storytime. I was walking through JFK Airport at 2 AM when out from the distance rose a Benefit vending machine. Benefit. Vending machine. My bank account is lucky I didn't max it out right there. Instead, I limited myself to just one thing--or, since it's Benefit, six things. I didn't even know Benefit had a skincare line before that moment--turns out it was brand new--but that didn't stop me.

This vending machine is legitimately a reason I don't fly through JFK anymore. LaGuardia would never tempt me like this.

Ohhh, but am I glad I bought it. What a wonderful little kit. I've had issues with breakouts for as long as I can remember, and this stuff was magical. The Refined Finish Facial Polish is one of the best exfoliators I've ever used, and I'll be honest, I'd never used toner before, but this made me a convert.

Sadly, the samples in this one are, for the most part, really teeny. For It's Potent!, a seriously excellent eye cream, that's not too much of a problem, but for the Total Moisture Face Cream? Not a chance. Especially since, dear reader, I am obsessed with this face cream. It feels so heavy and so luxurious, but the second you touch it to your face it sinks right in. And despite the thickness, it will not make you break out. It will just give you the softest, happiest skin you've ever had.

Also, since it's Benefit, it all smells amazing.

Products you might want full-sized? I actually did buy fulls of two of these--the face cream, of course, and the Foamingly Clean Facial Wash, because I found a cleanser that got rid of my acne and I was not going to let that tiny bottle slow me down. The full sizes are expensive: $22 for the facial wash and freakin' $42 for the face cream, so I'm not going to explicitly recommend them just because I'm a crazy person who spends almost fifty bucks on lotion. But I will say that the full sizes are huge. I bought them both nine months ago and I still have half left of each.

Oh, and did I mention this kit is $24?

#4 Rockitude Lip and Cheek Set/Go TropiCORAL Lip & Cheek Kit/Sugarlicious Lip & Cheek Kit

Full Lists of Products:

Rockitude:

- 0.13oz Benetint Rose Tinted Lip & Cheek Stain
- 0.13oz High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer
- 0.22oz Rockateur Ultra Plush Gloss
- 0.1oz Rockateur Famously Provacative Cheek Powder
- Mini powder brush

Go TropiCORAL:

- 0.13 oz Chachatint Lip & Cheek Stain
- 0.1 oz Coralista Cheek Powder
- 0.13 oz High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer
- 0.22 oz Ultra Plush Coralista Gloss
- Mini powder brush

Sugarlicious:

- 0.13 oz Benetint Rose Tinted Lip and Cheek Stain
- 0.1 oz Sugarbomb Cheek Powder
- 0.13 oz High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer
- 0.22 oz Ultra Plush Sugarbomb Gloss
- Mini powder brush

So these three kits are very similar; they all have a blush and matching gloss, fantastic liquid highlighter High Beam, either Benetint or its orangier sister ChaChatint, and a tiny powder brush that you should throw away, like all tiny powder brushes. For some reason, Go TropiCORAL and Sugarlicious both have mirrored lids on their boxes, which is a nice touch, but Rockitude does not. They are all $28.

Which of these to grab is really all about what color of blush you like. The Rockateur blush in Rockitude is a vintage-style dusty rose with enough brightness to keep you from looking washed out. Sugarlicious's Sugarbomb is a 4-part color that blends to a deeper pink than Rockateur. And Coralista is, naturally, coral. Forced to assign them, I would say that Sugarlicious is best for light skin, Rockitude for medium skin, and Coralista for dark skin, but because none of them includes any kind of concealer, they'll all work for any skin color.

Products you might want full-sized: Honestly? The little bottle of High Beam, like Benetint/ChaChatint, will last you forever, so you don't need fulls of any of these. But if you wish these kits did have concealer, now's a good a time as any to mention that Bo-ing, described as an "Industrial strength concealer," is hands-down my favorite makeup product of all time. So if you're in the mood to drop $20 on some concealer, there's the place. (You can also check out kits like How to Look the Best at Everything, $32, which has a light, medium, and deep option, each with two shades of Bo-ing. POREfessional's in there too.)

#5 Beauty Score!

Full List of Products:

- 0.01 oz Hoola bronzing powder
- 0.01 oz Bella Bamba blush
- 0.25 oz The POREfessional pore minimizer
- 0.25 oz “That Gal” brightening face primer
- 0.1 oz It's Potent! eye cream
- 0.01 oz They’re Real! mascara
- 0.08 oz Ooh La Lift under-eye brightener
- 0.08 oz Stay Don’t Stray in Light/Medium primer for concealers and eyeshadows
- 0.08 oz Benetint lip and cheek stain
- 0.08 oz High Beam complexion enhancer

This limited-edition kit, quite honestly, puts the others to shame. You get Benetint, you get High Beam, you get They're Real!, you get POREfessional, bright Bella Bamba blush and chocolately Hoola bronzer. You get Ooh La Lift, a cooling, tightening under-eye primer. You get That Gal. And you get eye cream, because why not.

The one glaring problem? Stay Don't Stray. It's a great primer, sure, but why is there only one version of this kit? If you're not light/medium skinned, then this isn't going to be the Stay Don't Stray for you. Annoying as that is, it's one unusable product in a kit of ten, and let's be real, no one ever got excited about eyelid primer anyway.

Products You Might Want Full-Sized? This kit is $36. Just buy it again.
