Updated on February 6, 2018

After 22 years as an RN, I now write about medical issues and new medical advances. Diet, exercise, and lifestyle are all important.

Travel Overseas for Plastic Cosmetic Surgery

Many people are travel abroad to South American, Asian and European countries to receive cosmetic and plastic surgery in a luxurious settings, known medical tourism. The cost of cosmetic surgery procedures is much less in several South American Countries and even in Europe. At this time the top five cosmetic plastic surgery locations are Panama, Brazil, Malaysia, Costa Rico and India. Other countries are close on the heels of the top five.

These surgeries are a big financial boon for these countries, as in addition to the medical procedure; there is the cost of transportation, accommodations and food. Many countries offer a package deal, which includes all medical procedures

Benefits of Panama Cosmetic Surgery

Panama is the closest country to the U.S., which offers cosmetic and medical procedures at 40% to 70% lower costs in a country that is fairly Americanized. Panama is also an attractive tourist destination. Many physicians are trained in the United States, so communication is seldom a problem as medical caregivers are usually bilingual. Many physicians belong to the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Brazil - Offers all Types of Cosmetic Surgery

Brazil - Top Destination for Medical Tourism

Brazil is known as one of the best places to receive cosmetic and plastic surgeries, as more than 600,000 procedures were performed in Brazil last year, which is more than all of the Europe Union. Plastic surgeons in Brazil are registered in the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgeons (SBCP), which validates their expert training. In addition,

Brazil has more hospitals that accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCAHO) outside of the United States. Surgery is performed in state-of-the-art, well-equipped facilities. Brazil is very well known for breast augmentations and cosmetic butt lift surgery. Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are just a few of the popular locations.

What Does a Brazilian Cosmetic Procedure Cost?

Brazil’s plastic surgery costs tend to run about 2/3 of the cost in the US or Canada.

Some typical prices include:

  • Breast augmentation - $3,800
  • Face lift - $6,000
  • Rhinoplasty (nose) - $3,300
  • Tummy tuck - $4,500
  • Neck lift - $1,200

Waterfalls of Ecuador

Source

Ecuador - Working Hard to Compete with Others

Ecuador is also a country steadily growing in the medical tourism. They want to compete with other Central and South American Countries. They have beautiful destination sites as well, such as, the Galapagos Islands, the Inca ruins as well. Ecuador has Private Health Care Facilities that are comparable to international standards.

Their government has invested in these facilities to make them state-of-the-art. The physicians are highly trained; many have been trained in the U.S. or Europe. They are bilingual, so communication would not be a problem. As an example of cost, a patient with a torn tendon in their shoulder, the cost would be $2,200, which would include pre and post-op care, hospital stay with medication. The cost of a hotel room runs from $15-$70, with luxury suites priced at $100.

Beautiful Malaysia

Source

Malaysia - Large Medical Tourism Site

Malaysia has enjoyed huge growth in their medical tourism recently to over 100,000 annually. Malaysia medical procedures include cosmetic, dental and even cardiac surgeries at a significant reduction in cost. Cardiac surgery in Malaysia cost $6,000 to $7,000. Malaysia has a favorable exchange rate with a very comprehensive network of hospitals.

Surgery in India

According to the National Center of Policy Analysis (NCPA), India has the lowest cost and highest equality. Many hospitals are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), and their well-trained physicians are known for using cutting-edge technology. This country is listed 5th on the list due to the long travel distance and the restrictions on investors. India is, however, well known for cardiac and orthopedic procedures.

Cheap And Affortable Plastic Surgery Overseas

In Conclusion

There are many reasons to take advantage of medical tourism if you are planning to have a cosmetic plastic surgery. The cost is less than in the United States, plus choosing an attractive place to visit is a plus.

Another consideration is privacy. Healing from a cosmetic surgery in another country means not meeting business associates or friends. It is important to check out the medical facilities and the cosmetic surgeon to make sure that have the best credentials. This is important no matter where the surgery is conducted, as you want a positive outcome.

Very interesting subject. I didn't realize that this could be done in other countries. I would probably consider that if I were having plastic surgery. Great hub!

Great research. We did a story about Plastic surgery in Cali-Colombia, and they have done wonders, according to friends and some private friends that went down there. Brasil and Malaysia are a little further but it depends if you want to have a good time as well. Thanks Pamela99! You did a wonderful explanation... We felt younger for a second with those pics!

Peggy, I was really quite surprised at the good quality of care and the reputations at many of these places when I was doing the research. I appreciate your comments.

We actually met some people who did that and saw photos of the place. Amazing! The price savings are substantial as you pointed out and apparently the legitimate places are well run with sterile techniques and outcomes similar to or even better than what we would experience in our country. For people without insurance, this is the way to go! Even with insurance, many so called cosmetic surgeries are not covered. Good hub. Up and useful votes.

I can see the advertising now, Pamela, for these cost-saving procedures:

Do you need a tummy tuck? Come to Panama and try your luck.

Don't let a facelift phase ya, Get it done in Sri Lanka, Malaysia.

You are right about India being more specialized in the area of cardiac and orthopedic surgeries. These surgeries cost about one tenth of the cost in the US. Informative hub. Thanks for sharing.

Ruby, I think Joan Rivers has probably had a dozen surgeries! I can see how looking at her is scary. You certainly don't look like you need plastic surgery anyway. Thanks for your comments.

Just looking at Joan Rivers scares me. I might change my mind, but I don't think I would have the surgery. If I did, I would want to have it here and really check out the Dr. Interesting article. Thank you.

Yes, I've seen this in Singapore as well. Many would go to Singapore for some of the medical procedures. Malaysia is our neighbor, so it's good to know that. Rated up and shared.

fpherj48, I love your sense of humor! Of course, most woman don't want wrinkles, or sagging in any part of their body. I'm not saying every woman wants to have plastic surgery, but there are certainly many who would have it if they could afford it. Thanks so much for your comments.

Pamela....You can be sure this hub is being printed and placed in my physical files!!!

So many women are reluctant to admit to considering cosmetic surgery........Please, give me a break.

So, women spend three quarters of their life on becoming and remaining as young and lovely as possible for as long as possible....regardless of how time and money-consuming it is........but suddenly, after 65 or so, they don't mind looking old, worn out and haggard??!

Sorry...this gal doesn't buy it. If there is something, ANYTHING, available to help me remain attractive and vibrant....and I can afford it......I'll WALK to Brazil. Don't really have the need yet...but it's coming. No one has the power to stop the clock!!

    Great hub....UP & awesome!!
