Turn Summer Fashion Essentials Into Fall Must-Haves

Updated on May 16, 2012

Everyone dreads cleaning out their closets and packing away all of their fun summer clothes, only to replace them with drab, boring fall clothes. Good news! You don't have to! By mixing and matching some fashion staples, you can wear your favorite summer clothes all year long. Warning: you may need more closet space!

Finding the perfect sundress can be quite a task, but once you've found it, you want to show it off. It's a shame that these breezy, sleeveless dresses only get to see the light of day for a few months out of the year. However, there are easy ways to transition your favorite summer dress into a fall must-have. You can always pair it with leggings and some chic ankle boots. Basic black or brown leggings can tone down a bright sundress, making it more of a fall outfit, but don't feel limited. Bright leggings can put a new twist on an outfit. Don't go too matchy though; complimentary colors work better than exact matches. If it's a solid dress, jazz it up with some printed leggings or textured tights.

Don't forget about your arms though! Goosebumps aren't in season anytime. A cardigan sweater is the perfect choice. Cardigans come in all sorts of colors and lengths, so don't be afraid to mix and match. Throw in a cinched belt, and it's the perfect fall outfit. A denim jacket or blazer works perfectly as well. Although it's not my personal favorite, you can also wear a fitted tee underneath the dress. Depending on the fit and style of the dress, it can be super cute, but sometimes it just looks off.

The trick to recycling your summer dresses into fall staples is layering. Leggings or tights underneath the dress, cardigan or jacket on top and you're good to go!

Tank Tops

Camisoles and tank tops run rampant during the summer months, but don't get rid of them just because the leaves are changing! Just like sundresses, it's all about layering. It can be as simple as layering them underneath a cardigan or jacket with skinny jeans. Complete the look with some fun flats or jazz it up with some heels. Patterned and textured tanks will make the look a little more interesting, and it allows you to hang on to the fun of summer. Sheer tops are all the rage this season, so have a little fun with it. You can do a solid sheer with a printed camisole, or a solid camisole with a printed sheer. Either way, you're sure to look great.

Not Just Clothes...

Just because you're not spending everyday by the pool doesn't mean you're not getting sun. Try a foundation with SPF in it to keep your face fresh. Using your summer bronzer will help you keep your beachy glow year round, but don't go overboard or you'll end up with an orange tinge that no one will be jealous of (think Snookie...). Beach-like wavy hair suits a bohemian fall look, and doesn't take much work. Braids are a big hit during the summer season because of their no-muss no-fuss appeal, and they're making waves with fall fashion as well. Dress them up by weaving ribbons or fabric through them.

By just mixing and matching, layering, and changing the way you look at your wardrobe, you can easily transition your summer favorites to fall must-haves. Don't be afraid to experiment with colors, patterns, and textures to get your perfect look. Have fun with it!
