Two Types of Acne Scars Treatment

Updated on August 11, 2012

It would interest you to know that there are different types of acne scars that could hit your face. This would include types like the fleshy, bumpy, flat and the depressed ones. There are some which would be just a discolouration of your skin while others would be a deep indentation on the face. In some of the scars they would be even darker than the original pimples that appeared on the face. It is for this reason that one has to come to terms with how to remove the acne scars or how to treat them effectively.

Self-Assisted Treatment

You would discover that there are two different kinds of treatment. These are the self-assisted treatment and the dermatologist-assisted treatment process. When it comes to the self-assisted treatment one of the things you can do is to exfoliate your skin daily in order to slough off any part of the damaged skin layers that have the scars of acne. In this process you can choose to use glycolic and salicylic acid or even a facial scrub that has some little exfoliating beads. This would work very well in a matter of few weeks as the acne scars fade away.

Furthermore you can choose to use some creams that are skin lightening in order to take out the red marks and discolorations.  You can easily get these topical lotions by prescription or even over the counter. There are active ingredients that you can benefit from here like hydroquinone; kojic acid and liquorice extract which all serve to fade the acne marks that are shallow. In order to take out any depressed acne scars on the face you can also use topical pockmark filler.

Dermatologist-Assisted Treatment

When you consider the dermatologist-assisted treatments one of such is to go in for a microdermabrasion treatment. Here there is the use of a machine that would remove some fine layers of scarred skin. What this then does is to help in the growth of a healthy and scar-free skin. There is also a skin resurfacing treatment known as the fractional laser therapy. This also takes out any damaged skin tissue fractions. For those who have acne scars that are concentrated in some particular areas of the skin like the forehead or cheeks, this is the right treatment for you. It may be necessary to go in for multiple treatments if you want to get rid of all the scars on the face.

For all these treatments, it is important that you do well to consult a dermatologist who would assist you in choosing the best form of treatment. You would have to be cautious in the usage of the skin lightener as there is the need to avoid any exposure to the rays of the sun. If not then you can apply sunscreen anytime that you choose to go outdoors. Moreover, it is important that you never pick at the scars as this would only serve to make them worse on the face.

Hmm I just think that it's important to protect scars (any type) from the sun regardless of any treatment that one's using. You're right though that the sun does a lot of damage.

I agree with what you have written and want to add that chemical peels are also effective. The best treatment for deep acne scars; on the other hand, is with dermal injectable fillers, such as Collagen, Restylane, Juvyderm, Radiesse, and Sculptra. Laser resurfacing often is not good enough for these type of scars. For more information visit

Hi Dolores, thank you for visiting. Laser rejuvenation treatment is good to remove the acne scars and faster, the costs are vary, and you're right it's quite expensive. I found the cheaper cost in Singapore, about USD 320 while in States is up to USD 550. But you have to consider the ticket's cost too, sigh..

How about try some scar removal home remedies, like A mixture of sandalwood paste and black gram paste? it helps reduce the intensity of scars. Or cucumber and lemon juice mixture. I hope it helps.

febrie- I have a few acne scars and have found that as I get older, they are showing up more, due, I guess, to the general falling down of the face. I'd loved to get laser rejuvenation, but it's a bit expensive.

yeah consult your doctor but here are some tips/home remedies I can give you, tips would surely help you deal with the issue better.

*The first thing, you should make note of is to keep their face clean. You need to use a good antibacterial cleaner to keep your face clean.

*Another important thing to take note of is the kind of soap that you use. Try not to use soaps that contain detergents.Don’t be harsh on your skin by rubbing it too hard.

*Using a moisturizer is a must for acne sufferers.

*On mens acne, while shaving, is instead of a thick shaving cream. This can help you avoid pricking of pimples. Always start your shave with wetting your beard with warm water. This helps to melt the hair. Make sure that you wash your face with cold water, once you are through with your shaving. This will help to shut down the open pores. Straight away apply anti acne medications after your shave and avoid using any aftershave.
