What is Steampunk?

Some of you may be wondering, what is Steampunk? Steampunk is a combination of Victorian, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Edwardian, Wild West, Alternative History, Dystopian, and Horror fiction all combined into one beautiful dress style. It includes elements of technology and science that the people of the Victorian era probably envisioned the future having.

Steampunk become incredibly popular in the 1980s. Many people around my age became familiar with Steampunk when it was the feature dress and setting for Will Smith's 1999 movie, Wild Wild West.

When people think of Steampunk, they usually think of a style of dress. However, Steampunk can also refer to art, d├ęcor, architecture, literature, and cinema.

Victorian Steampunk Costume Options for Women from Amazon

Victorian Steampunk for Women

Women's Victorian Steampunk costumes are incredibly fun to put together. Amazon has several complete costume sets put together that you can purchase online. This helps to eliminate the hassle of trying to piece together your own costume.

If you really want to make your own costume without having to purchase one online, there are a few essentials that you will need. First off, you will need either a vintage style dress or skirt. If you opt for a skirt, make sure it is long. Victorian women didn't wear anything in which their ankles could be seen. The skirt can be tight, like a pencil skirt, but most of the time it should be loosely fitted. For a vintage dress, go with long and flowing. You can make your own if you are creative, or can easily purchase one online or from consignment shops. The colors should stay dark; think blacks, reds, grays, browns, etc. Plaids work well too if you can find a classy looking plaid.

There are additional things you will need to complete your outfit. Black tights, riding boots, corsets, gloves, bowler hat, a pocket watch, and a choker if you want. Your outfit should include lots of lace, as this adds a classy touch to a Steampunk outfit.

Victorian Steampunk for Men

Designing a men's Victorian Steampunk costume set is actually quite simple. There are a few complete sets already put together and sold whole on Amazon. But if you choose to come up with your own costume, it's really rather easy.

To pull off a men's Victorian Steampunk look, you will likely need a vintage vest, top hat, walking cane, dress shoes, vintage black or striped socks, Victorian style trousers and overcoat.

Steampunk Makeup Tutorial

Steampunk Hair & Makeup

Steampunk hairstyle really vary from person to person. Some women like to keep their hair straight and natural, others like to go all out and do a vintage Victorian hairstyle. Many of the more interesting Steampunk hairstyles out there are dyed pastel or shocking hair colors and to curl it in spirals. They usually have long hair or wear a wig/extensions. If you want to keep it simple, just do a half braid and wrap it in a bun. Leave the rest of your hair down. This leaves for a very classic, very vintage look.

For men, Steampunk hair is rather basic. If you have longer hair, you can curl it so that it will look nice under a top hat. You can even keep it straight. A very striking look would be to grow your sideburns out and shape them nicely. Think Elvis!

Women's Steampunk Makeup can get rather creative, or it can be rather simple. If you opt for simple, just do your makeup as usual, apply a soft blush, and accent your eyes with a dark eyeliner. If you want to get a little more creative, add sequins to the side of your eyes, such as stars or hearts. These can be purchased or painted on if you are artistically inclined. To make your eyes stand out, apply a bright, neon colors to them. Neon greens, purples, and oranges. If you want a more Gothic look, apply a dark brown or blackish-gray eye shadow.
