Wardrobe Basics: What Every Woman Needs in Her Closet

Updated on May 8, 2013

It is common for women to love fashion. We tend to buy clothes from season to season to stay relevant and on-trend that will at the same time reflect our personal styles. While staying relevant and trendy is always a good thing to keep your wardrobe fresh, there are certain clothing items that every women should have in their closet. These wardrobe basics will allow you to create multiple looks and surpass all trends. Every woman should have these in their closets as these wardrobe basics are items you can use until you get old and they will never become outdated.

Basic White Tee

Every woman needs at least one basic white tee in her closet. You can opt for a crew neck for a classic look or a v-neck for a more youthful appeal. You can also opt for scoop neck white tee's for a sexy yet classy look. It is highly advisable that you invest in a nice and good quality white tee. A poorly made one will only last you a few washes and may start to develop some discolorations after a few uses. The Gap has a great selection of basic white tee's in various necklines. Old Navy also has a great selection of basic white tee's that are good quality (though not as great as The Gap's) and very affordable as well.

Basic white tee's are very easy to style. You can easily pair it with some trousers or slacks, a blazer, and some black pumps and you are ready to head for work. You can also dress it down by pairing it with shorts or a maxi skirt and some cute flats or sandals and you are ready to stroll in the park. A basic white tee is very versatile and will take you through many different occasions.

Black Blazer

A black blazer is a must for every career woman. This can turn any outfit from casual to work appropriate in an instant. It can instantly make anyone look more professional. It is also best to invest in a good quality black blazer that you can wear for many years. A black blazer never goes out of style anyway so investing in a good quality one is a great idea. Plus, the fact that you can create multiple looks with it - from work to formal events to casual occasions - a black blazer should definitely be an investment. Zara and J.Crew have great selections of black blazers but they can be quite expensive for most people. If you want an affordable but high quality alternative Express has some as well.

A black blazer can be worn in the office with a pencil skirt or trousers and it can also be dressed down for brunch with your friends or for a quick stop at the mall by pairing it with shorts and some boots or cute flats.

Neutral-Colored Coat

For people who live in colder regions of the world, investing in a nice neutral-colored coat is a must. This will help keep you warm all throughout the fall and winter seasons. A coat that is neutral-colored such as nude, taupe, and camel are preferred because they are easy on the eyes and they are very easy to pair with.

ASOS is a great online store to find good quality coats on a budget. They have a wide selection from no-name brand coats to designer ones so there is definitely one that will fit your budget. Zara is also a great store to checkout for more expensive but high quality coats as well.

Jeans

I don't think there is one person in this world who has never worn jeans in his entire life. Jeans is a wardrobe basic and we all need at least one pair. Jeans are probably the most versatile piece of clothing ever invented and it can transcend all seasons, all trends, and all styles. It can be paired with just about anything and it can be worn just about anywhere. You can wear it to work by pairing it with a button down, classic pumps, and blazer. You can wear it casually with a tee and sneakers. You can make it girly and feminine by pairing it with a corset top or a lace blouse. The possibilities are endless!

Since jeans are very versatile and you can practically live in them, it is best to invest in a good pair. 7 for All Mankind and True Religion are probably the most popular high quality jeans that are also quite expensive. Diesel and Levi's are also quite popular for creating high quality but expensive jeans. If you want a more affordable pair, American Eagle and Urban Outfitters are great stores to check out.

Neutral Cami

A cami in neutral color is also a must-have in every woman's wardrobe. You can wear this under certain clothing items that need something underneath so you don't show things you shouldn't be showing. A cami is important if you are wearing something sheer like a lace or chiffon top, tops that have very low necklines, and tops that have very low armholes. You can also wear a neutral-colored cami under a cardigan or a blazer for a sexy look to work. You can also surprisingly wear it when sleeping and even when working out. You can wear this no matter the occasion and no matter where you are.

American Apparel has a great selection of neutral-colored camis you can find. Victoria's Secret is also a great place to check out.

Little Black Dress

We have all heard the term LBD before and this clothing item is no baby in the fashion industry. Every celebrity or fashion icon we have come to love have worn at some point in their lives an LBD. It is a versatile dress that you can dress up or down and wear multiple times without people even noticing you are wearing the same dress. We all need at least one LBD we can wear on special occasions such as dates, awards, formal dinners, or for funerals.

An LBD can be found sold almost everywhere these days. You can go for high-end LBD's at Zara, Topshop, Banana Republic, Nordstrom, and many designer brands. But you can also find a trendier and more affordable versions at Forever 21 and even Target.

Black Pumps

When it comes to footwear, a wardrobe basic would definitely be black pumps. Not nude, not white but black pumps. Since black is probably the most versatile shade there is, it is no wonder why black pumps are a wardrobe staple. You can wear it on various occasions and pair it with different clothes. You can dress it up or dress it down. It will always make any outfit you wear look put-together and polished.

Black pumps can also be found sold almost everywhere these days. If you want a super high quality pair, you may opt for designer brands like Prada and Jimmy Choo. There are also high street brands like Zara and Nine West that have a selection of black pumps. If you want a more affordable pair, Payless and Target are definitely great places to check out.

These are basically everything your closet needs to have all the time. Cropped tops and maxi skirts may be trendy and fresh today but you will see them die again after some time. But these wardrobe basics will never die. They will remain fresh and relevant no matter the season, no matter the occasion, no matter your age, and no matter the era.
