How to Apply Makeup Like a Professional
What should your essentials be?
So, yes I am definitely one of those women who dares not to step out of the house without makeup on. I am not a diva. Though I have heard I look pretty natural as well, I just love makeup! It's simple. I love buying it, I love experimenting with it on me and others, and I often look for ways to make it last. Let's face it, most of us are pretty busy. Most of my days require getting up at 6am to get ready for work and getting my daughter ready for school, dropping her off at school and then arriving to work for an 8 hour shift. And that is unless I work nights. Then it becomes even more complicated. I then come home and do my schooling or write on here(after the kids are to bed, of course). That doesn't leave me a whole lot of time for anything before I have to wake up and do it all over again.
What's in my makeup bag on a continuous basis is important to me. I am not really talking colors, mascara's, or lipstick's. I mean the products that is a must use for my everyday life. What I need is some good quality makeup that is quick to apply, lasts me throughout my stressful day, and stands out! The products you will find in this hub are what you will constantly find in my makeup bag because I simply cannot live without them. Let me know the essentials in your makeup bag as well!
An updated Favorite!
Tarte Clean Slate 24 Hour Pore Perfecting Primer- This primer is among the best. It leaves my face matte, primed, pores hidden, and ready for makeup application!
My god, where would my life be without this stuff! I may have mentioned this in a former hub, but I first tried out foundation primer on a whim before it got big. I have worn it everyday since, after a good moisturizer of course. Even if you do not wear makeup everyday, you still need to try this product. Though it comes in many different varieties, some with added benefits, the purpose is all in the same. It keeps your face matte, your foundation goes on a whole lot smoother, and it hides those ungodly pores. It is pure amazement in a tube. It is so hard to explain if you have not used it, but you can just...feel the difference. It is worn underneath your foundation. Your face is smoother, your makeup looks nicer and natural. I generally use the drugstore ones rather then the expensive professional ones because they work just as nice for me. Hey, a penny saved is a penny earned right? Although I just recently received a deluxe sample sized Bare Minerals Prime Time foundation primer from Sephora and it is some pretty good stuff. You will hardly find a drugstore brand these days though that do not have a primer. Try it out and I promise you will not regret it. My favorites are Revlon and Loreal!
Revlon Colorstay- It's an even full coverage that lasts all day. Plus, it is the closest to MAC's Studio Fix you are ever going to find.
Clinique Pore Refining Instant Perfecting Makeup- The title says it all and it goes on velvety smooth.
Foundation is the foundation of all makeup application(no pun intended). There are many different kinds offered on the market these days. From full coverage to light coverage tinted moisturizer. For me, my foundation has to be a nice even, full coverage foundation that works with my combination oily skin-type, and lasts for most of the day. I like it to be matte and stay that way. Women with a more dry skin-type might like a more dewy finish with their foundation. You just have to do your research and read the labels on products before you buy. On hot, summer days or just days in general that I do not like to wear a lot of makeup, just a little BB Cream goes a long way.
Physicians Formula- Makes a great concealer called Concealer RX that is perfect for under eyes circles and is a top pick among consumers.
Hard Candy- A little thicker concealer, it is completely full coverage and is actually made for the purpose of covering up tattoos. I use it for pesky pimples or anything thing else that needs a good cover up. You can find it at Walmart and it is on the cheaper side.
Concealer is just one of those things. You can use it for ANYTHING. From those pesky pimples and dark under eye circles to scars, marks, and tattoos...there is a concealer for you! Concealers are made to cover-up and you need to find the right one for your skin-type and preferences to do the job. For dark under eye circles, you will want a concealer a tad lighter then your skin color and foundation. For pimples, scars, and tattoo's, you will want a concealer that is as close as you can get to your skin color. As far as redness and tone matching, there are plenty of skin correcting concealers out there to help with that, too.
Anything Sigma, Sedona Lace, or MAC you cannot go wrong with. They are a little on the pricey side so shop around for some cheaper brushes if you must. Just look for soft bristle brushes that will not hurt the face. Also, good quality brushes with no fallout make applying makeup a lot easier.
A Good Set of Brushes
I use a brush for everything. I do not use my fingers, or a sponge, or even that cool new Beauty Blender everyone has been talking about, though I would like to try it just to see what all the fuss is. So for me, a key part to my makeup bag is a good quality brush set. They make a brush for just about any known piece of makeup you can put on your face. They make it- I have it. If you are a brush user like me, then you will also want to invest in a good quality, clean dry bag or case to keep them in, and some brush cleaner. I do have brush cleaner myself, but I have found that good ol' fashioned mild shampoo and water work best.
An Amazing Deal!
Revlon Colorstay- Just like the amazing foundation, the pressed powder works just as nice.
Neutrogena Shine Control- This powder is on the newer side is quickly becoming a new favorite. It gets rid of oil and gives you a matte finish all day.
Powder comes in many forms and color. You can get pressed powder, loose powder, dark powder, light powder, translucent powder...it is endless really. Just find the one that works for you. I only really use a colored powder when setting a concealer, or a darker one for a bronzer(yeah, that's right and it works brilliantly). Other then that, for setting my face I use a translucent powder. Translucent looks and appears white but goes on your face invisible. No face is perfectly set without powder.
Maybelline Fit Me Pressed Powder in 355 Coconut Dark-Yes, pressed powder works amazing used as a bronzer. This particular one goes on smooth and is a perfect color for me.
Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder with Real Cocoa- a bit on the darker side, but one of the best bronzers I have ever used!
Bronzer is one of the most misguided and misused makeup products out there. I have literally heard dozens of friends and clients who claim they do not use bronzer because they do not want to look like the Snooks from Jersey Shore. Bronzer needs not to be plastered all over the face! You can put all the foundation, concealer, powder, mascara and lipstick on in the world, but a face is not a face without a good contour. Also, be sure to stray away from bronzers with shimmer in it and go for a more matte choice, otherwise you may come out looking like a pixie doll. When used properly, bronzer can chisel you out some cheekbones, slim your nose, slim or show a jawline, and make you look like sun-kissed perfection!
