Microdermabrasion is a process that is used to exfoliate the skin. Exfoliation is the process of removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells, to reveal new younger looking skin.

Microdermabrasion helps -

  • to treat many skin conditions such as acne, age spots, dull stressed out skin, blackheads, whiteheads and large pores
  • to remove marks, fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, excessive pigmentation and superficial scars

The skin constantly produces new cells. The dead cells fall off from the skin and is replaced by the new cells. Microdermabrasion assists this process mechanically by removing the topmost layer of the skin.

Crystal Microdermabrasion

In this type of microdermabrasion, microcrystal particles of aluminium oxide or corundum are used. They are applied to the skin using a crystal wand at high speed. The crystals act like sandpaper on the skin and remove the dead skin cells from the surface. The dead skin cells are then sucked away by vacuum.

Microdermabrasion has to be done by an esthetician in a salon or with a dermatologist who also owns a med-spa. If the process is not done with proper precautions, the crystals may enter the eye or damage the skin.

The esthetician has a look at your skin and decides how the treatment is going to be and how many times the treatment has to be undergone for best effects. This procedure can be used for people with sensitive skin because the speed of crystals can be controlled.

Diamond Microdermabrasion

In this type of microdermabrasion, a diamond pen is used. The diamond tip itself acts like sand paper and loosens the dead skin cells that are then sucked away. New younger looking skin is revealed. In Diamond Microdermabrasion, the roughness of the diamond tip can be varied depending upon the skin type.

Advantages of Microdermabrasion

The advantages of microdermabrasion are that it is totally non-invasive – no cuts or nicks performed on the skin. There is no pre-preparation time that is a necessity for an operation.

There is no recuperation time. A person who has undergone microdermabrasion can get back to normal life immediately after the procedure. The only point to remember is to apply sunscreen before going out.

Microdermabrasion is not very deep penetrating, and a person has to undergo the treatment many times for full effects.

Microdermabrasion is also very effective on other parts of the body like the hand, back and neck.
