If you have an hourglass shape, then you are among the 8% women whose bust and hips are about the same size accompanied by a small waist. Celebrities who possess these features - Salma Hayek, Christina Hendricks, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Love Hewitt - are often in the spotlight as best dressed on the front covers of glossy magazines. Let's see what are the do's and don'ts for them.

Taking inspiration from hourglass celebrities: Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Salma Hayek

These ladies know how to show off their curves and make the world love their looks. But it’s no magic or secret. We can also pick up some of their tricks and inject the best attributes into our wardrobe by taking a closer look at how they dress for the red carpet or when they are heading out for shopping.

Let’s start by taking a look at some photos of Kim and Jennifer...

So what do we see here? With carefully selected accessories, prints and colours, they draw attention to their best features – the curves and small waist - whilst making sure to keep a balanced look. Too many accessories, too tight clothes and showing too much skin is not what we they aiming for.

Do’s and don’ts for dressing hourglass women

Belts

A belt worn on the waist will make your waistline appealing and enhance the curves. A narrow belt could 'decrease the size', whilst wide belts may seem to add on a few pounds on the area, so it's best to avoid lower fitting belts on hips.

Tops

V-neck shirts that show a glimpse of the neckline but don’t reach too much down and boat necks look best on this shape.

If the neckline is too high up with a big bust, it may create a disharmony in the appearance, meaning that turtlenecks are usually not to aim for - unless worn under a small jacket.

Also avoid blouses and tops without a fitting waist line and with some very few exceptions peplum tops are a no-no - though a loose shirt could be redesigned for the purpose with a belt on top or a tunic could be combined with a slim fitting pair of jeans.

Dresses

For the best silhouette choose a dress that is either following the body contours (but not too tight) or one that is perfectly fit on the top and ends in a slightly A-lined bottom, just as Salma did.

The length is also important as a long dress will optically minimize the height, mid-calf could add on more than we had hoped for, so I recommend a dress ending below the knee or maximum 5 inches above to get a classy look, as Kim did on the above photo.

Pants

Since the hourglass' hips are round, pants and jeans are most comfortable when they are high or mid-waist. Jennifer is shining in her navy blue high-waist pants.

Low waist jeans are always in fashion but be aware that they could hurt the looks by unbalancing the proportions of your outfit.

Jackets

Similarly to the tops, go for a well-designed jacket even with a belt and avoid the bulky ones. Jennifer Love Hewitt chose this cute dark blue jacket with golden buttons on the front and ruffles on the bottom. With the smart add-ons her military style jacket is more feminine and a perfect match for Jennifer's winter boots.

A badly chosen jacket may make you look 2-3 times larger in size, so the cut is just as important as the fabric, colours and style.

And finally some tips on patterns

If we aim for minimizing optically and keeping the proportions with an accent on the best features, then prefer small patterns and solid colours but avoid large prints.

Christina Hendricks' floral dress is a great example for choosing a patterned dress with the right length and colours that gives this Mad Men star a chic look.

And remember, stripes can also be a great look if the stripes are printed in the right angle. Horizontal stripes visually make the person wearing it wider and vertical stripes could create the illusion of a taller person. So go for the second option.

Thanks for stopping by, Anne and for leaving a comment. Though there are debates around what type of clothes best suits this shape and I believe the aboves will work well on an hourglass.

Inaccurate. The style tips are wrong and the list of celebs isn't accurate either. Hourglass is 10" difference between hips and waist & bust and waist.
