What Is A Hair Toner?

Updated on December 21, 2009

Hair Toners

....As I finished rinsing out my clients hair color I tell her "I'll be right back, I'm going to get the toner for you"...she looks at me and ask me "what's a toner?,what does it do?, did something go wrong?"...and they start to worry.....

I was not surprised to get asked that same question other clients of mine had asked me before. Before, I just assumed they already knew because they've been getting the same service all the time, I just assumed their previous hairdresser would let them know what they were doing to their hair.

So, I thought I share this with you today and talk to you about  what a  toner is. Toners are basically semi-permanent colors that we use on pre-lighten hair to cancel out yellow tones, orange tones, brassiness. They are deposit color only, and they last from 4 to 6 weeks.

Toners are used depending on the results achieved after pre-lighting hair, once the level is achieve we can determine what "toner" we can use to neutralize any unwanted tones like yellow, or orange colors.

Well, now you know.  Next time you  are getting your  highlights done or your  bleach retouch and they talk about using a toner,  don't panic, it is just to give you that special touch to  your hair to make it look fabulous!

....And If your hair gets too brassy after a couple of days, you can ask your hairdresser to get you some of the color and mix it with a color safe shampoo to enhance your color everyday. Toners are ammonia-free colors and not only gives you shine but keeps your color vibrant.

...sorry, and now back here in the USA they put it on before I remember to discussed my options, and my hair never seems to have enough contrast, it seems to tone the brightness down too much for my liking. Does toner 'blend' the color? Tone it down?

I used to go to a salon in Australia where my hairdresser said I didn't need toner, and I liked the brightness we achieved,

does the level of lightness determine what toner to use ?? my hair was lightened to a level 7-8 in violet. So will i have to use a level 7-8 toner or will a level 10 violet do the trick?
