a Hot Happy Quirky Hat for an 18-year Old
What to send to a grandchild who lives thousands of miles away and has become a high school senior!
Looking for a fun item he would use, not just tack up on his wall as a momento from grandma, I donned my artist persona, with a bent for the odd and unusual, topped it with my contemporary eye for quirks and searched an astounding array of baseball style hats.
What else would a Texan guy wear! Oh yeah, right, he'd wear a cowboy hat. Well, if so, then he already has one of those and I can't afford a new hot shot western hat anyway.
My tactic is to search for a gift item I might buy for myself if I weren't a 69 yr-old granny, but a high school senior with a smile as wide as the swoop of a clock's hour hand - from 3 to 9! So I clicked onto Amazon and entered "hats" into the search bar, and then the fun began.
My grandson is a gregarious guy with a bent for drama, appearing and starring in community presentations. He's a band member and in photos he always seems to be leading the band or whatever group he's playing with. He's fun loving, with a smile as big as any cartoon character, and inside he's one fine sportsman.
As a visual artist I like quirky things, no conservative here
I want my dress to reflect my contemporary thoughts. What else could I do, but imagine myself in his athletic shoes (when he participates in sports) and search for a hat I would wear if I were an 18-year old thespian who played a mean horn (I use the term as a nonmusician who doesn't recognize the specific instrument - he plays more than one.
A baseball hat was a safe choice but I wanted more
than the same 'ol same' ol, so persisted in my search for something with punch. ilililly's hat had such immediate appeal to me that I knew I'd knocked a home run. I'd have a ton of fun wearing this very hat if it were for me. I ordered it.
Waiting for the response from a teen is akin to waiting for your own son to come home from a late date with the car. And when he's in Texas and you're clear across the country it drags on, especially when the gift arrives seven days ahead of the Birthday.
Verdict's in: He says it's Perfect, a kick, and his favorite hat. He's happy, his dad's happy, and I'm giddy. This is the right hat for a young character with character and a musical heart.
On a recent visit to the town of my youth I ate a Passion Salad with great relish. It excited my taste buds like this ililily baseball hat caught my grandson's delight!
I like the colors on this one and the fact that mesh fabric makes it cooler, but something told me to forget the hot Texas weather for a moment.
This one appealed to me too because I like the relaxed look of the distressed fabric designs.
