Ditching the Diaper Bag
On Being a Fashionable -Yet Functional- On-The-Go Mama.
Becoming a mom doesn't mean you need to trade in your trendy style for a permanent pair of sweats. Running out of time to primp yourself doesn't always call for that faded baseball cap, either. And when it comes to all the stuff you suddenly must lug around to keep your children clean and fed, a bulky, polka-dotted, pastel diaper bag isn't the only way.
You CAN, in fact, be Supermom and still be Supercute. Take a look at Wonder Woman. She fought daily battles to restore love and peace in the world. (Relate-able to parenting, yes?) That star-studded tiara didn't just keep her hair in place. No, it also served as a projectile weapon. Those chic, chunky metal bracelets? Bulletproof and fire-deflecting. The trick is to accessorize practically, so your bling helps you function, rather than weighing you down.
I'll be darned if my kids look more put together than I do. Upon entering motherhood, I pretty much vowed never to fully "give up" on looking good. I'm a fairly natural girl, but being an Earth lovin' mama doesn't mean one must look like a total frumpster. I may no longer have time for the morning makeover of my pre-mom days, but I have a few must-have accessories that help me look like I'm making an effort.
Tote It. - My Carry-All System
The Haiku To-Go Bag is amazing for carrying all your personal schwag. Here are a few things you'll find inside of (or clipped to) my bag:
Fits right inside the Haiku To-Go bag. This wallet has slots for cards and a few different compartments for organizing-mongers like me, including a designated pouch on the outside for a cell or ipod. It also has a detachable shoulder strap, so on nights when you've broken free from your little creatures, you can carry it solo. Multiple colors available.
Weighs virtually nothing, stuffs oh-so-compactly into itself, cinches closed and clips to your Haiku bag with a small carabiner. Presto! You have a backup bag for impromptu shopping trips. It's even made from recycled plastic bottles. Comes in a rainbow of shades to match your personal palate.
Perfect for stashing a few baby wipes (just fold 'em and put 'em in a travel soap case.. no need for a giant container) diaper cream, sunblock, and other kid essentials.
Wonder Woman would be proud of you... this key-holder is practical-plus, and could totally double as a weapon if you held it right. The only thing I love more than clipping keys to my bag is being able to unclip only the key that I need... you know, when the car's running but you forgot your phone on the other side of your now-locked front door?
Last but not least... Owl key covers. Oh-my-goodness, you just hit adorable status.
Drink It. - These .6 liter bottles not only look adorable with the Haiku tote bags above, they also fit PERFECTLY in the side holsters.
Whomever designs SIGG bottles gets my utmost gratitude: they are indestructible. For awhile, you could only get them in solid silver, or with their giant "+" insignia. Then, someone over there got smart and decided to make them so, so pretty. My first one served me faithfully for four years (and I never even lost it thanks to my Haiku bag holsters). My second was a impulse buy, because again, it was just so, so pretty.
There are plenty of knock-offs out there, but they dent easy and can make your water taste funny. SIGG is worth the extra $. Be sure to invest in a sports cap, too... they are sold seperately, and replace the screw-top that comes standard with most bottles. It gets cumbersome to screw and unscrew every time you want a drink, whereas the sports cap flips open easily (and comes apart for cleaning).
Elegant, ethereal, with a hummingbird to boot.
Oooh, la la. Architecture and kitties together... c'est magnifique.
Purple horses on a lime green bottle: very hipster. This one comes with the ever-essential sport cap too. Total bonus.
So ugly it's beautiful.
Sweet blooms in fun colors really pop on this stark white bottle.
Rock It. - Skip The Mom Haircut, There's Another Way.
You don't have to cut your flowing locks in the same swoop as the umbilical cord. I honestly don't know what the phenomenon is with the pixie-short hair accompanying the end of almost every pregnancy. Some women do wear this style well, and if you're one of them, more power to you. But for the rest of us, keep your hair, and enjoy adorning it with flair. Here are some of my favorite finds to cover up less-than-perfect hair.
A cozy winter fleece with a hole for your ponytail! All cool-weather caps for women should come this way!
... and for more wardrobe versatility, it comes in black, too. :)
Pistil is a really cool, smaller company that makes awesome hats. Fyi, their belts are beauteous, too.
Love prAna clothes, especially because their prints and patterns are so fun. Super well made to stand the test of time. Good investment clothing.
I don't actually have one of these... yet. The reviews blew me away, though, with runners and other active-happy people just raving about them.
The buff headband in "Pop" is soon to be mine.
Powder It. - A Little Goes a Long Way.
Super, simple-to-use products that subtly enhance the already-beautiful face you were born with.
An awesome bronzer to layer over foundation for a clean, sun-kissed look.
For when it's time to take the powder off. Doesn't burn or sting. It's gentle, made primarily with Chamomile water. And The Body Shop is all for treating people and animals well, so you can use it knowing you're being a good to yourself and your furry friends.
Beauty products aren't just about making you look like something you're naturally not. There are so many wonderful products out there to keep your hands smooth, your lips kissable, and your skin smelling delicious. Here's a few eco-friendly products that do just that. One dab, dollop or rub and you'll instantly feel better. And when you feel good, you glow from within!
Great for active outdoorswomen (especially in the winter months), and moms with good hand-washing habits, as both a protective and restorative measure.
*I've actually stood in line behind Burt himself. He looks just like his drawing, for real.
The ONLY "lip-stuff" I've ever know to keep 'em soft, smooth, and safe from the elements. I have sung the praises of this little tube for the last two years, and will never go without it.
Paraben and cruelty-free. Made in the USA, too.
"This exhilarating fragrance features notes of citrus, green chilli, white flowers and cedarwood. It has been created exclusively for The Body Shop by two of the world's leading perfumers."
Romantic, and appetizing at the same time. I love smelling like this.
A friend of mine hooked me up with this cute 'lil patterned tin of solid perfume. It's always in my Haiku bag, so I always have a back-up plan for smelling great without worrying about spilling a vile of perfume.

The Golden Lasso of Truth
(Wonder Woman's most important accessory... and also a catchy title for this last section.)
The total truth is, if you're a mommy who wants to do it "ALL," you will probably always feel you're falling short. That's what happens to us overambitious, reach-for-the-moon kind of girls. There are only so many hours in a day, and I've yet to meet the mom with the superpower of stopping time. Managing to meet all of your children's needs while still paying attention to your own is a huge feat on a daily basis. You'll have your good days, your not so good days, and a lot of in-between days.
So, on those better days, be extra kind to yourself, and remember that a little loving care to your own body will do wonders for your mind, making the big-picture battle that much easier to win.
