Personally, I do not believe that appearance is everything. Intelligence, grace, wit and compassion are the things that last and will truly prove what kind of person you are.
However, to much of the world, appearance has a huge impact on the first impression that people make about you. A little thing called "beauty privilege" is always present whether it be when applying for a job or going to the market. The more aesthetically pleasing you are, society rewards you, because you present yourself in a manner that they are accustomed to. Yes, you may even have a better time taking your children to school depending on how many people you encounter.
We're groomed societally and culturally to appreciate those more that ascribe to a certain standard of beauty.
