1st Birthday Outfits for Boys
Son turning 1? A perfect ensemble is worth the search
As a mom of 3 boys, I never worried much about the fact that girls were clearly the beneficiary of most baby clothing designers' imagination and creativity. Denim diaper covers and blue booties were enough for me :) With twins the second time around, I had the additional pleasure of putting them in matching outfits.
I did feel frustrated, though, when the twins--my last babies--were about to turn one. This was (gasp) 13 years ago, and based on what I saw in the shops, 1st birthday outfits for boys were scarce.
Eventually I gave up and just put them in some cute overall outfits they'd worn before. They were having a little home party, just family and good friends, hardly a red-carpet event that required brand new duds. But if I could do it all again (minus the diaper changing part!), I'd love to dress my baby boys in something with a birthday spin, like the embellished little shirts on this page or, given their crisp fall birthday weather, even a couple of matching suits. At the very least, I'd put them in an adorable felt or fabric party hat instead of the scratchy paper kind they tried to pull off. After all, you only turn 1 once!
(photo, above: Like most babies, my twins were more excited about the boxes at their 1st bday than the gifts that came in those boxes...)
~~ Just in time for summer! Mud Pie seems to have replaced its previous pastel-hued birthday seersucker shortall with a two-piece option that is not only brighter-colored but more versatile, as the blue striped shorts can be worn anytime. A charming applique alligator heralds the bday boy in style.
~~ Add some zingy red or orange pants and this vibrantly detailed dragon-blowing-out-the-candle shirt makes a perfect baby boy 1st birthday outfit. Fits on the looser side. Bonus: Made in the USA!
~~ Before trains, pirates, superheroes, outer space & guitars, my eldest son was hugely into diggers. If your little guy is, too, then your search for the perfect party T might be over.
~~ Looking for something a bit more buttoned-up? Here are some of my favorite options.
Did I mention trains? Get a dressier look for fall or winter with this handsome sweater vest combo, powered by an all-time favorite boy motif. My little locomotive lovers would have adored wearing this.
Why wait for 4th of July for a snappy red, white & blue outfit?
Another dressy option. He'll be picture-perfect in this five-piece getup complete with cap, suspenders & bow tie. This is just like the matching green knickers ensembles we received as a gift for our twins' first St. Patrick's Day. Not the most breathable fabric, but for one day of photo ops? It works!
A shot of happy yellow keeps this dressy look from being too somber for birthday festivities.
You've gotta love the "Mr. Hipster" name of this adorable line from Petit Lem -- and the fact that your little guy can be super comfy with this trompe l'oeil bowtie.
Chocolate stain removal
Will your son's birthday cake be his first-ever chocolate, as for my guys? The pix are great, but the clothes don't fare so well! Use a stain-treating product pronto, and for really stubborn stains, try cream!
~~ Celebratory cotton Ts are probably the most cost-effective way to dress your party animal. Do check the reviews for sizing as, oddly enough, it sounds as if the superhero shirt may run smaller than the superstar one, though they're from the same label.
Yes, superheros were another obsession in our home. I love the pop-art appeal of this t-shirt.
Break out of basic-blue mold with this zippy teal and orange combo. Also in yellow!
For the little hipster: Pair this boldly graphic black "1" tee with fun plaid, checked or striped pants.
Simplify your life with this T that's colorful enough to stand on its own as a boys 1st birthday outfit--choose with or without name (just type in), short or long sleeve styles--or pair with a bright color on the bottom. (Don't worry; you can skip the pink headband! Not sure why Zazzle's baby T models are always female...) Half the design proceeds for this item go to Save the Children, so choosing this is doing something nice for kids in need, as well as your own bambino.
Tip o' the hat...
Can't budget for a complete first birthday outfit? Never fear. These megacute hats make the day and are waaaay more fun than the drugstore variety I grabbed for my guys. And the first four options are $15 or under as of June 2013. The more elaborate "headband" choice is a bit of a splurge, so maybe best if there's a younger cousin or friend's son to pass it down to once the party's over. (Bonus: It comes with a matching a bib...a godsend when that yummy, messy cake makes its appearance!)
