Black and beautiful African braids and hairstyles
Nappy hair...Are you loving it?
There are so many things that can be done with Nappy hair or African hair whichever you prefer to call it.
If you don't want to comb it, it can be locked. If you want to feel free, wear it Afro. Want culture? you can braid it. Feeling funky you can chiney bump/bantu knots it. If you don't like black, streak it color it. If you want it curled, twist with gel, dry and unwind it. If you want it straight moisturize & flat iron. Fill the gap, as I said the possibilities are endless.
With the right hair products and a little time on our hands we can style African American hair and make heads turn.
In my opinion, Nappy hair is at the top of "The Best Hair" list. I'm not saying this because I have nappy hair, I'm saying it because is the truth. If you are of African descent like myself, then you are most likely the proud owner of a head of beautiful nappy hair, that's wonderful.
Do you have Nappy hair? - Nappy hair is a term used to refer to the natural texture of African hair
Do you have nappy hair?
Your hair is your beauty
Its not only a phrase, it is true
Have you ever noticed how magnificently different you look in a fresh new hairstyle?. If you haven't, take note of yourself before and after your hair is done. Even if it is just a simple shampoo, it makes you feel lighter and your face pops, something like a face lift. This gives me great pleasure in styling hair because when its all done, I feel like I've just given someone a face lift.
I love styling hair and braiding is my specialty, even though I wish I could do everything under the umbrella of hairstyling; cutting, relaxing, perm, waves, the whole works. However, braiding is what I do.
Recently I did a research on African American hair; the dos and don'ts in order to assist my clients in making their hair more manageable and worth keeping (no-relaxer). I'm glad I did the research, I am now fully aware of how to deal with African American hair and the right hair products to be used. This made me fall in love with my hair all over again, I had a new look at Nappy hair.
I smiled as this confirmed what Wayne Dyer said and I quote... " When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change"
When I finally understood African American hair, it became manageable. Here's my research, I hope this will help
Hairstyles done by yours truly
# 1. Elegantly braided
Hairstyle for special occasions
This braid was done with kanekalon extensions. The extreme back was done in single twist/ box twist, the top was cornrowed, a bit of kanekalon braid was added to give it a fuller look, as the client's hair was very thin. A pack of the kanekalon braid was rolled to make that beautiful coiled design at the back, giving it a more elegant look. It was done for a wedding, as you can see it is a lovely hair style.
#2. Zig-Zag up-do
The name speaks for itself
This is a beautiful braid that is done in a zig zag formation, as shown here. This is usually requested by younger clients. It takes a longer time to get fuzzed out or worn and a quicker time to get done. This braid is fun and easy to do, I can section the hair however I want and in the end it would still have a beautiful finish.
#3. Box twist with cornrow front
This is another freedom hairstyle
Freedom in the sense that unlike the cornrow, there's is no tension whatsoever on the scalp when the hair is done in box/twist braid. I usually recommend box twist to person who has really tender scalp. I also recommend this hairstyle most, during the summer when the time is hot and sometimes humid. When this is worn during the summer and the scalp get sweaty or itchy, the hair can be washed and greased without undoing the braids. This hairstyle also allows the scalp to breathe properly. It can be curled, spiral, pinned up etc. it's a style for many occasions

#4. Big and little up-do
Quick and easy yet beautiful
I name this big and little, as you can see some of the braids are big while some are small. This client wanted a hairstyle that would last for only one week, as she would return to get a redo for a special occasion the following week. This is a quick up-do. I think if they were all done big and chunky it would not have looked so beautiful so I put some small ones between the big ones. This gave it a different/better look.
Another beautiful design by yours truly
This is a freelance hairstyle, meaning, not inspired by anything. I sectioned the hair evenly and started braiding one after the other, hoping it would turn out real good. Well that is what is done with most of the hairstyles I do. However I think it turned out beautifully. Somehow it looks like a star-burst in the middle or maybe a spider.
You may have two faves like myself, but you only can vote for one :-)

Avoid hair products that contain alcohol which dries out hair
One of the best time in my salon is when I am braiding a male's hair. Why? because all that they request is a quick neat hairstyle. Meaning, it doesn't matter what I do as long as the end product is neat and the process is quick. With their nappy hair, I can do just about anything, unlike females who will tell you exactly what they need. This gives me an opportunity to be creative as there is no limitation to what I'm allowed to do. Below are some hairstyles I've done in males' hair.
#1. Leaf/Fish bone braids
Inspired by the leaf and fish bone
This was my first attempt at the fish bone or leaf hairstyle. I think it turned out great. Does it look like a leaf or a fish bone? I think it looks more like a leaf.
#2. Hooked zigzag and straight
Done in a male's hair
This was the first time doing this hairstyle, I had a few request after doing this. I think it turned out well.
#3. Criss Cross hairstyle
Done in a males's hair
Another easy freestyle, done with creative cornrows to the front and box twist to the back. This hairstyle can be pulled back into a ponytail while maintaining the creative braided hairstyle to the back
#4. Zig Zag
In a male's hair
From what I have experience, men love these hair styles. As I said, zig zag is easy and the process is quick. Most male clients dislike sitting in the chair for hours to get their hair done so they'll say do something neat and quick. Those male who desire a specific hairstyle usually request zig zag. So they'll be able to jump in and out of the chair.
In a male's hair
I am usually inspired by the things in my surroundings and I oftentimes do them as hairstyle. This coiled hairstyle was inspire by a coiled pattern/design I saw on a burglar bar, It did not turn out the same but it worked for a hairstyle and my client liked it.
Its now time to vote for the males
Which of the above male hairstyles is your favourite?
African-American/Black hair in general is more brittle, coarser, dryer and curlier (nappy) than those of non-African decent. Because of this, hair care for a Caucasian would be different than an African, who needs to be more careful when treating his/her hair because it is more delicate.
Fishbone or Leaf? - They can't decide. I'll let you decide
Clients leave the salon with this particular hairstyle, another sees it and creates a different name for the style.
Some clients will request the fish bone hairstyle, others will request the leaf. On first request, I wondered if they were different, but found out they were referring to the same.
What name best suits this hairstyle?

Hair tips: A protective hairstyle is simply wearing your hair up in a style that helps protect the hair and ends from external elements (i.e sun, rain, wind) whilst retaining moisture. A protective hairstyle can be worn as a bun, in clips, pony tails weaves plaits, or even a cap.
Allow me to distract you from braids, for a while - Let's do something quick and easy (Protective hairstyle)
Bun or Chignon
This is a simple yet sophisticated hairstyle that works for any occasion, especially dressy or formal ones. All you need are hairpins and a covered elastic band and if your hair is not as full, you may need to buy a bun. Buns work on relaxed and natural hair. Just in case you are on the run and don't have the time to make it to your hairstylist this is an ideal hairstyle to whip up really quick and still turn heads whenever you step out.
As you can see in the above photo, Celebs also think its a great hairdo. The good thing about this is, it is a protective hairstyle. If when pull your hair back you do not have a bulk of hair to make your own bun, you can buy one. Oh yes you can, you can also get them in shades to match your hair color, here I have sourced some clip on/drawstring buns that will do justice to your 'pull back' hairstyle

The joy of my salon
Children usually have little or no specific request when they sit in my chair. Unless the parent request a specific hairstyle, its all left up to me and tha'ts what I love. Most children only wants to know that their hair is braided, it is beautiful and they get loads of compliment whenever they step out of the salon. This is another freelance hairstyle, in which I created the style as I went along, nothing planed
Small diamonds braid
This braid is quite easy to do, any non professional can do it. Just move the comb in a zig zag formation and that's that. I only do these style in children's hair but if you like it as an adult, its always worth a try.
Pineapple and zig-zag cornrow
A fruity hairstyle
Pineapple braid as you may have noticed is inspired by the pineapple fruit. This braid is one of the easier ones to be done, but unfortunately harder to be undone.
A bigger version of the above style
This diamond braid is another quick hairdo. Quick because the braids are big and the head is not big. The client is 8 years old. Her mother requested a style that would last her a week or so, a style that would be easier to undo and one that would last a week or so.
Do not put harsh chemicals in your child's hair - Let your child be happy wearing sporting her nappy
I am of strong belief that children's hair should not be relaxed/ perm/ processed, call it what you may. Parents should not change their children's hair texture for any reason or the other. Let them enjoy their natural beauty. Allow them to make the decision when they grow up. Changing a child's hair can affect her self esteem. If I was a child and my hair texture was straightened, I would definitely think that the other children who were born with straight hair are my superiors, since I had to look like them to belong.
If you think your child hair is too nappy and hard to manage, try a different approach like I did. My husband oftentimes reminds me that the situation/problem is only as big as we approach it. Therefore if you look at it as a big/small issue, that is what it shall be.
The use of good quality but gentle shampoo and conditioner does make a difference, stock up on detanglers, use hair lotion/moisturizer, bigger tooth combs, use a good hair dryer, all this will make life easier for both mother and daughter. Click here to find them on Amazon

This braid was inspired by the design on a floor tile
As I sat on my bed one day and I took notice of the tiles on the floor. The pattern/designed seemed as if they popped out on me. Funny enough they had been lying there for the past 2 years. Then the idea came, This could be a hairstyle. I decide I need to try it in someone's hair. I did it in a child's hair and this was the end product.
Cute Kids Braid
One of the reasons I really love nappy/African hair is that I can do whatever style braid I want with it. Nappy/African hair is so obedient. Its like an artist being given a canvas, the canvas will just sit there waiting to be painted. In my salon, the clients are the canvas and I am the artist, my fingers are the brush and my brain the paint. This 'web' I so call it, was inspired by an actual spider and its' web. I saw the two and wondered how it would look if I tried it as a hairstyle. I experimented and this was the result.
The hairstyle that everyone can do
Box twist and beads
These are my two beautiful daughters, wearing the easiest to-do braided hairstyle for children. Even though I'm a hairstylist they are not so fortunate to get all the styles done in their hair. Only when going out on special occasions they are so fortunate. 80% of the time this is what they sport, the box twist and beads. It is easy to be done and even easier to be undone. I have three girls and I do not have the time to sit and do each of them hair in styles that will need to be undone within a week. So I prefer to do the box twist and beads. This can be worn to school and it can last them two weeks or more. If time is on my hand and it cannot be undone in time, I wash their hair and grease the scalp just the same, with the twist and beads and they are good to go.
Another thing about this hairstyle is that it is easy on the scalp, no tension whatsoever, and it can be left hanging or sectioned and tied into the desired amount. So this hairstyle is really more than just one hairstyle.
Accessories for the easiest children hairstyle - Box twist and beads
Having a bucket of beads allows you to have more colors to play around with the hairstyle. Also if you choose to use a particular color, a lot of that said color can be found in the bucket, instead of buying small packs of bead in order to get a single color.
These tiny rubber bands are use to hold the beads unto the hair, without them the job cannot be done
This is an all inclusive kit. Beads of different shapes, rubber bands, the stringer to string beads unto the hair. Just in case you want to give this 'box twist bead' hairstyle a try, to see if it works for you and you child before you dig into it, this is the kit to purchase.
Here I've found some beautiful kids hairstyle on youtube - Lovely indeed
Always use water based moisturizers and coconut oil can penetrate the hair shaft of nappy hair (African/American). Other oil products simply coat the hair giving it a look of moisture. However, the hair is still dry and susceptible to breakage.

Get Rid of the Itch Now - Dandruff EEze...Miracle Inside a Jar
There are many reasons the scalp itches, some of which are; allergy to chemicals, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Dry scalp, Scalp Sunburn, Folliculitis, Scalp Psoriasis etc,.
My scalp itches terribly whenever I wear braids/extensions. I have used other products for my itchy scalp, while some worked some didn't. When the itching intensified, I thought I would go bald, it became unbearable. My hairstylist recommended that I used . Dandruff EEze
Within minutes of applying dandruff eeze to my scalp the itch disappeared completely and even though the directions on the jar reads: apply 2-3 times weekly and massage.
I didn't have reapply Dandruff EEze until I removed the braids from my hair and was getting it redone.
Now, I used Dandruff EEze on my scalp before I add extensions to my hair then put away the jar until my next hair do.
I cannot tell you enough, how Dandruff EEze really works. Dandruff EEze is one of the few product I can honestly recommend, because it really works.
