9 Awesome Eyeliner Hacks every Girl should know

Updated on January 7, 2015

When it comes to eyeliners, you can never know enough or have enough, isn’t it! Most girls swear by this lean and mean cosmetic product. Just a sweep of it along your lash lines instantly beautifies your eyes and adds charm to your looks. That’s probably why none of us can go a day without it. Ever noticed how people ask you whether you’re ill or you’ve been crying all night if you do forget to apply this wonder product? So, always highlight your eyes with a bit of eyeliner as it goes a long way in making you look fresh and attractive.

However, thanks to our busy schedules, or over-sleeping habits, we sometimes are in such a rush that we can’t afford to spare much time manipulating liquidy, slippery eyeliners along our lash lines. Instead of giving eyeliners a miss, follow these quick-as-a-wink eyeliner hacks to speed up the process. In seconds you’ll have well-defined eyes, and no, you won’t miss that bus or train either!

Burn it up!

No, not your house; the eyeliner pencil. On days when you feel your kohl pencil isn’t moving smoothly along your lash lines because the product has become hard, heat the tip of the pencil a bit before applying. If the thought of torching your pencil alarms you, you could also blow dry the tip to soften it.

Freeze eyeliner if it is crumbly

What happens to liquids when they are frozen? They turn into hard solids. So, if you want to solidify your melting, crumbly eyeliner, place the eyeliner pencil or tube in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Voila! Your eyeliner has regained its solid, smooth, sleek state!

Fixed smudged edges with a nude eyeliner

Applying eyeliner can be difficult, but wiping it off proves to be a much bigger challenge. If done improperly, it results in ugly smudges and discolouration of the area. So, instead of slogging away with a piece of tissue, simply use a nude or skin colour eyeliner to cover up the flaws.

Connect the dots...

To get a straight line! Instead of struggling to create a straight line by freehand, draw tiny dots along your lash line and connect them to create a near-perfect line. Now that you have a line in place, spend a couple of seconds perfecting it by applying another coat of eyeliner.

Pencil line before liquid lining

Liquid liners can be tricky and it takes a lot of time, patience and skill to apply them well. Kohl pencils, on the other hand, are easier to apply and less likely to smudge or run. So, to quicken things, first line your eyes with a kohl pencil and then go over the line with liquid liner for darker, more intense colour.

You could even try out very fine tipped eyeliner pens to get error-free lines. The Maybelline Colossal Eyeliner has a 0.4 mm Flexi Tip applicator that helps you draw perfect lines. Check out the product here: Maybelline Colossal Liner

Where there’s a will, there’s mascara!

So you’re running late and have just enough time to sweep on some eyeliner. But, on opening the tube, you realize that you’re out of product. Don’t wail in anguish yet, for you still have that tube of mascara. Use an angular brush to collect some product and line your eyes with it.

The hash trick

If you love the Smokey eye look, but think it’s too complicated to achieve, this eyeliner hack is perfect for you. You can also create the Smokey eye look with an eyeliner pencil. All you need to do is create a hashtag shape on the outer corner of your upper lid and smudge it using a sponge. Repeat the process to get a darker, smokier look.

Pick a card

The winged eye look is a beautiful eyeliner look to sport as it adds sultry charm to your eyes. However, the required flick can prove difficult to achieve. So, here’s a trick to help you get the perfect flick. Place a business card at an angle near the outer corner of your eyes and draw along its edge to get an angular line. Now, thicken the line with some liquid liner and line the rest of your lash line too. There! Your winged eyeliner look is done.

Shadowy antics

If you thought that lining your eyes was the only thing your eyeliner was fit for, you’ve grossly underestimated the versatility of this product. Eyeliners also double up as eye shadows when needed. This is especially true for coloured eyeliners. All you need to do is apply a thick stroke of product on your upper lid and smear it artfully using a brush or sponge.

Well, now that you’ve learnt these very useful and very cool eyeliner hacks, make sure you put them to good use!
