Best Shoes For Standing All Day

Updated on October 8, 2015

Do your Feet Hurt After Standing All Day?

I've been a manager in retail for several years. As a retail manager I work very long hours on my feet standing on tiles over concrete. So at the end of the day, my feet hurt. I mean they really hurt.

Usually by the time I get home I can hardly walk. My feet are so sore. Then they would stiffen up and really throb. I would also have pain in my knees and my legs as well. They do say that when your feet hurt, everything hurts.

After getting home at night I would ice my feet. Then later on I would soak my feet in Epson salts, but that was just a temporary solution. I needed to be able to figure out a way to manage this pain. Or get a new job.

Seeking A Solution for My Aching Feet

But quitting my job really wasn't an option for me and my family. So I needed to find a solution to these aching feet.

So I started thinking about people that stand on their feet, you know nurses, teachers. I wanted to figure out how they survived standing all day. And I learned that it all comes down to a good pair of shoes.

This page is about the solution I found. :)

New Balance is the Shoe that I Chose! Read On to learn why....

New Balance Walking Shoes Women

After working many years in retail I can tell you that it is really important to invest in a good pair of walking shoes. I personally prefer the New Balance brand of shoes.

New Balance Walking Shoes women are really worth every penny! I own this exact shoe except in black to match my uniform at work. I ordered it in wide so it fits my foot really well. This is the shoe I recommend to anyone who works in retail on their feet.

New Balance 967 Walking Shoe Review

I love these shoes! They are worth every penny!

Updated - February 2012.

These shoes take a lot of wear and tear. I purchased my New Balance Shoes in March of 2011 and now almost a year later they still feel and look great! They feel just like I just purchased them. These are for sure the best shoes for standing as I am on my feet 12 hours a day several times a week.

Update - April 9, 2013

I just had to share a picture of these shoes so I could show you first hand how they have held up. I know from the looks of them they are a bit worn. But I have been wearing them 5 days a week for well over 2 years. They are just a comfy as they were the very first day I put them on.

If your feet hurt from standing all day, you really should consider buying a pair of New Balance Shoes!

Update - October 19, 2014

I still have the shoes and can wear them if I want, but I decided to retire them.

The seam is pulling a part a bit and actually I was able to crazy glue it and it works great. But, the tread on the sole is very worn from years of walking on them, so when I walk on wet surfaces I tend to slip a bit. So even though it breaks my heart it is time to retire them but have no fear I will be heading out to the mall for a brand new pair.

New Balance is the only shoe that I have owned that has lasted this many years. I am so impressed with the quality. New Balance is the only brand I will wear going forward.

Best new balance shoes for the elderly

This walking shoe is great for standing and stability. It is very comfortable gives your feet the support it needs for standing. It comes with velcro fasteners which is great for someone who has a hard time to reach their feet or perhaps for an elderly person.

I think New Balance Shoes are the Best Shoes for Sore Feet

Your feet can feel good and look good!

New Balance Women's shoes are the most popular among people who work on their feet. They will give you the most comfort. These walking shoes are made of the best quality so they are a great value for the money. New Balance has a nice variety of colors and sizes. Which is your favorite?

New Balance - Comfort right out of the box

I wanted to share with you a few suggestions of New Balance shoes that I think are the most comfortable to wear all day. They each offer support, comfort and padding. With New Balance shoes, you will not need to break them in. They are comfortable right out of the box.

New Balance is Perfect for Standing

This shoe is perfect for standing and walking because it has a nice mesh that helps to keep your feet cooler. These shoes also offer the same support and comfort that New Balance is known for.

My feet always hurt. They have hurt my whole life. I go barefoot as much as possible. Thanks for the information about how to find a comfortable shoe. Thees days I wear only flats and I look for a big toe box so my toes are not cramped. I also look for material that has a bit of give to it. And of course, good support for the arch and heel.

I am a Barber/ Hair Stylist. On my feet all day and I cannot wear an athletic shoe to work. New Balance makes great shoes ,but this style will not work for me. Are there any other suggestions?

Looks like a great shoe, I'm sure people who have to be on their feet the entire day would benefit from these.

I have used New Balance shoes for years. The last pair of "traditional" New Balances I had actually were so stiff my knees hurt. I moved to their more minimalist line with more flexible soles and mesh and I am back in love again.

Oh yes...great shoes like New Balance are essential for standing jobs and can also help reduce back pain (my plight)! I also worked as a Retail Manager for 5 years but unfortunately, these shoes were not allowed in the dress code.

I'm a New Balance fan, too... though when I worked as a waitress (summer job in the 1960s), we weren't allowed to wear running shoes. The best shoes for standing all day were those white nurse's shoes with chunky heels. I was in my teens with "granny" shoes, but my feet didn't hurt at the end of the day.

My work in the clinic is not sedentary. I walk about checking my patient, stand while talking to clients and run after the ringing phone. I wear somewhat comfortable Crocs at work, even so, on busy days, it doesn't help. I'll check out the walking shoe. Thanks for sharing.

@plasticfantastic: Hotter shoes look them up just ordered a pair can't wait to wear them. There a bit pricey but worth the comfort.

I love some of your ideas! :D Unfortunately I work in retail for Clark's Shoes, so I have to wear their brand, but I will definitely bear some of this in mind when going for my next pair of gym shoes! (Thinking specifically of the inserts.)

Also I'd love it if you could set a lens up, or perhaps add to this page, a little something for those working in manual labour jobs such as construction, plumbing or warehouse work (I was thinking along the lines of a comfortable pair of suitable and protective work boots, considering when ever I have to don my own the high point of my day becomes getting them off!). Thank!

Yes! I just started a new job and I work a straight 8 (very few breaks) I'm on a poured concrete covered in ceramic tile floor. I am a heavy set girl and I tend to put all of my weight on my heels. After training I will be doing 12 hour shifts I need a shoe that will stop or at least lower the pain i have in my feet, legs and lower back. I know losing weight will help & I am working on that as well. Any suggestions on a good shoe? also it's restaurant work so it needs to be black and oil/slip resistant. Thanks in Advance

What about for people who can't wear nikes at work.... And have to wear dress shoes? Then what? I'm on my feet 8+ at a retail store where the dress code is business. My feet, ankle, calf, and hip pain has more recently tuned into a BURN.

My feet, knees, hips, and back really hurt not just at the end of the work day but about 30 min to an hour after I get to work so I'm in pain & total discomfort mostly all day on the days that I go to work. I stand at a desk all day but sitting causes shooting pains through my knees so I rather put up with the discomfort of standing all day than shooting pains from sitting.

@anonymous: Im right with you.....I am a deli worker, and on my feet all day...i retired my newbalance running shoes after spilling chicken blood into the mesh on my toes lol

    • profile image

      anonymous 5 years ago

Yes, most of the time Im working 8-9 hour shifts and as a cashier Im on my feet the whole time. By the end of the day my feet, legs and back are killing me. It probably doesn't help that the sneakers I own now are starting to fall apart on me. I was working in deli for a while and I guess having chicken grease, juices from other meats and dishwater spilled on my feet on almost a daily basis sucked a lot of life out of these shoes.

No, but I have some pains I get from wearing shoes that were not wide enough in the toe as a child. This causes occasional joint pain at the base of my big toe, which turns inward, just slightly enough for a disagreement between joints.

This is timely for me because I need to buy some new walking shoes. I'll be sure to click through your Amazon module when I do.

      Timely info. Thanks.

I don't have a job in which I stand all day, but the little standing I do in high heels hurts me! It's hard to find a comfortable pair of shoes; I will look into some of these options for my off days to give me time to recover!

Teachers are also on their feet all day and comfy shoes are a MUST for me! I built a similar lens to your best shoes for standing and I also swear by New Balance, I call mine Clouds cause that's how they feel. Other favorite shoe brands include: Ecco, Birkenstock, Dansko, Merrill and Clark.

When I was a retail mgr or even just a worker, my feet hurt until I learned to buy shoes a half size too big that were just for work. Tennis shoes were not an option for me. but after I quit, those shoes are all too big. that's ok, I'm glad I quit that job!

This is great! I teach a couple of days in a week and would definitely need comfy shoes to protect my feet during hours of just standing. I hope to see some style appropriate for work. Fantastic lens! Hey, I just published my fourth lens called the 3 Shortcuts to Happiness and would love to know what you think of it. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Blessings! Sundae ;-)
