Best Drugstore Hair and Makeup Items

Updated on September 4, 2014

What gives me any credentials when it comes to beauty?

Growing up, I remember always being so envious of my more fortunate friends. When we would get ready for the movies or parties, they were always pulling out their MAC makeup products, Chi straighteners, etc. I was never able to afford those high end beauty products growing up. On a positive note, I think that this actually ended up working to my benefit in the long run. I have saved so much money from only buying drugstore products. And quite frankly, I've tried my friends high end products, and my drugstore products work just as well. Shopping for makeup from Walmart and Walgreen's my entire life also helps me to be more knowledgeable of what works and what doesn't. Let's face it; I've tried almost every beauty product from the drugstore. Not to mention, I also absolutely love watching makeup tutorials on YouTube. I have acquired this list from advice that I have gotten from beauty gurus on YouTube and from my own personal trial and errors.

The store that I put for each product is where I have found the product at the lowest price. However, I am sure that you can find these products at any drugstore.

Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer

$7.59 Target
This is by far the best primer I have ever used. You can use this primer alone or before applying foundation. It gives your face such a smooth look, even before applying your foundation. My friends constantly compliment me on how smooth my face looks since I've been using this primer. It also helps your foundation to go on extremely smoothly. Ladies, if you are not using primer, I recommend you start. It makes SUCH a difference.

L'Oreal True Match Lumi

$8.95 Walmart or Target
I have had so much trouble when it comes to finding a foundation that I like. But thanks to a beauty guru that recommended this product, I FINALLY found a foundation I love. It goes on smoothly and does not have an orange tint to it at all. Being tan, you have to buy darker foundations which always tend to leave you looking orange. It also gives your face a glow without looking oily.

Concealer/Dark Spot Corrector

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles

$7.99 Target
I used to use two different products for concealer (covering up pimples) and dark spot correcter (under my eyes). However, this product works so well for both jobs. It can completely cover up my pimples and coming from a person with terrible bags under their eyes, it does a great job of brightening those up.

Maybelline Fit Me Blush

$4.49 Target or Walmart
I am not very picky when it comes to blush, so it's not hard for me to be pleased with it. But this blush is great because it lasts all day. Other blushes I have tried are normally off after a few hours. I also like the color (Light Rose) because it is pink enough where you can see it, but not where it has me looking like a clown.

NYC Sun 'N Bronze Bronzing Powder

$4.47 Target or Walmart
This bronzer does a great job of giving you a tan without making you look orange. This bronzer lasts me all day, and is also the most inexpensive one (that works well) I have been able to find.

Contouring/Eyebrow Filler

Salon Perfect, Perfect Brow Defining Kit

$7.97 Walmart
I put this product under contouring and eyebrow filler because I use it for both. If you buy one product from this list, this needs to be the one. I could rant and rave about this product all day. It has been so difficult for me to find an inexpensive contouring product that actually gets the job done. Even though this product isn't made for contouring, the light brown color in the palette works perfect. Before finding this product, I had always used a pencil to fill in my eyebrows. If you are using a pencil, stop now. I'm telling you powder is the way to go. The kit includes the perfect brush for filling in those eyebrows.

Translucent Powder

NYC Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder

$2.74 Walmart

I'm going to be honest, this is the only translucent powder that I have ever tried. But, it has worked so well for me I see no point in trying another one. This powder just helps to keep your foundation, blush, and concealer on. I have been using it for almost a year now and I have no complaints about it!

Highlighting Powder

NYX Mosaic Powder (MPB01) Highlighter

$7.99 or Ulta

Although this product is not found at a drugstore, I included it in this list because it is found at drugstore prices. I have tried numerous drugstore highlighting powders and this one is the best by far. This really helps to brighten up your face and give you a beautiful glow.

Rimmel London Glam Eyes Quad Eye Shadow (002) Smokey Brun

$5.99 Walmart
If you love neutral colors for eye shadow, then you'll love this quad. It is great for creating a smokey eye for dressing up or just a simple neutral everyday eye look. The light cream color is great for a highlighter up by your eyebrow. The dark brown is for creating the smokey look. And the two middle colors are perfect for the lid.

L'Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions

$7.99 Target or Walmart
I seriously swear by this mascara. I don't necessarily have the longest or thickest eyelashes, but this mascara tricks people into thinking that I do. I used the L'Oreal Telescopic mascara for years. Then I decided I needed to branch out and try other mascaras. I tried at least five other mascaras, but none of them compared to this one. Not only does it add length and thickness to your lashes, but the unique brush does such a good job at brushing out your lashes, even if you had left over mascara on!

Covergirl Bombshell Intensity Liner

$6.99 Target or Walmart
This felt tip eyeliner is perfect for top eyeliner. For years, I had used Almay liquid eyeliner which also works very well. But, I recently decided to branch out and try this eyeliner and I love it even more. It lasts all day and makes it so easy to create that perfect wing.

Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner (Waterproof)

$5.79 Target or Walmart
This is what I use for bottom eyeliner. No joke, I have been using this since middle school. I'm not lying when I say that it stays on ALL DAY. Everyone that I have gotten to buy this product absolutely loves it.

Maybelline Color Whisper by Color Sensational

$5.99 Target or Walmart

For some strange reason, I have NEVER been able to find a lipstick that looks good on me. My sister recommended that I try this. I used it and became so elated that I finally found a lipstick that I could pull off. It is very smooth and shiny, kind of looking like a lip gloss. The color is very pigmented and looks beautiful, not to mention, it stays on for a very long time.

Hair Heat Protectant

Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray

$3.99 Target or Walmart

This is the only heat protectant that I have ever tried. I spray it on the ends of my hair about ten minutes before I begin styling my hair to give it time to begin working. I have noticed a great decrease in my split ends sense I began using this product about a year ago. This is the most recommended heat protectant that a lot of beauty gurus on YouTube suggest. You also have to love that price.

Remington Wet 2 Straight Ceramic Flat Iron

$24.99 Target or Walmart

When it comes to straighteners, they work differently on everyone. None of us have the exact same hair textures or thickness. However, for me personally, this straightener works the best. Yes, even better than Chi's. The thickness of the straightener helps me to straighten my hair more quickly. This is also the only straightener that can seem to keep my hair straight throughout the day.

Curling Wand

Remington Pearl Ceramic Professional Curling Wand

$19.99 Walmart
I'm not including a curling iron on this list because I still have yet to find a curling iron that works on my hair. However, this curling wand works wonders. It gives my hair perfect curls that hold all day. And if you can go a day without showering, your hair will be in beautiful waves the day after you curl it. Wands are also extremely easy to use and don't take long to curl your entire head. This curling iron also comes with a glove to prevent you from burning yourself.
