What is Corundum?

Aluminum Oxide in Crystalline Form

Corundum - or aluminum oxide in crystalline form - is a mineral which comes in an array of colors: grays, browns, pinks and reds, yellows, oranges, greens, blues, violets, and colorless.

In its most naturally pure form, it is clear and transparent. The different colors come from different impurities.

Can you guess which two precious stones are corundum? Continue on to find out.

Special Jewelry Makes a Special Gift - for Birthdays, Anniversaries, or Any Time

The corundum jewelry featured just below features red, pink, or rose colored corundum stones.

Not only does jewelry featuring Corundum come in a variety of colors, like other gemstone pieces, it comes in a wide range of prices.

The four precious stones are:

Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby and Diamond

Pink and Pretty! - Lovely Natural Pink Corundum, Accented with Diamonds

This versatile mineral comes in a number of colors, and one of them, pink, just gorgeous. Here, it's paired diamonds, for a pink and white combination that's just as feminine as can be.

These would really stand out when worn with dark clothing - like black, navy, deep maroon, or chocolate.

They would also look just stunning with white or another neutral.

Rubies are Red Corundum

When corundum is red to deep blood red in color, it's a ruby.

Gem-quality red corundum is red due to the presence of chromium.

Rubies naturally occur in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. In the United States, they are less plentiful, but can been found in Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wyoming.

In recent years, deposits have also been newly discovered in both Greenland and Kenya.

Pink and Red Gemstone Necklaces - Pinks and Reds are Real Favorites

Surprise someone special with a beautiful gift of a corundum necklace.

Everyone loves rubies, but give a July born lady a ruby to capture her heart. Ruby is the birthstone for July. Give it to her on her any occasion, from birthday to anniversary to Christmas or Mother's Day.

Padparadscha: A Rare Corundum Variety

Pinkish-orange Corundum is rather rare. These particular gemstones are called padparadscha, or padparascha sapphires.

Natural orange sapphires are rare.

The largest deposits are in Sri Lanka, but they are also found in Vietnam and in some parts of Africa.

Blue Sapphires

Blue sapphires are actually corundum.

From the Amazon Curated Collection comes this Synthetic Blue and White Corundum Oval Pendant, set in .3925 sterling silver, and presented on an 18" chain. It comes gift boxed.

If you're looking for a very special gift, there are matching and coordinating pieces on Amazo. Look for a ring, earrings, or a bracelet to go with the pendant shown here.

Sapphires Come in Many Colors

Sapphires are not limited to blue. They also come in green, grey, violet, yellow, and white.

All other colors besides red and pinkish orange fall under the classification of sapphire, and they come from corundum.

In addition to blue sapphires, there are sapphires of several other colors, including green, pink, gray, and yellow.

Sapphires are most abundant in Eastern Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and East Africa.

There are also some in a few parts of North America, including Montana, and North Carolina.

Natural shpphires are commonly heat treated to improve clarity.

Pure Corundum has a hardness of 9.0
