Rubies are Red Corundum
When corundum is red to deep blood red in color, it's a ruby.
Gem-quality red corundum is red due to the presence of chromium.
Rubies naturally occur in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. In the United States, they are less plentiful, but can been found in Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wyoming.
In recent years, deposits have also been newly discovered in both Greenland and Kenya.

Padparadscha: A Rare Corundum Variety
Pinkish-orange Corundum is rather rare. These particular gemstones are called padparadscha, or padparascha sapphires.
Natural orange sapphires are rare.
The largest deposits are in Sri Lanka, but they are also found in Vietnam and in some parts of Africa.
Blue sapphires are actually corundum.
From the Amazon Curated Collection comes this Synthetic Blue and White Corundum Oval Pendant, set in .3925 sterling silver, and presented on an 18" chain. It comes gift boxed.
If you're looking for a very special gift, there are matching and coordinating pieces on Amazo. Look for a ring, earrings, or a bracelet to go with the pendant shown here.
Sapphires Come in Many Colors
Sapphires are not limited to blue. They also come in green, grey, violet, yellow, and white.
All other colors besides red and pinkish orange fall under the classification of sapphire, and they come from corundum.
In addition to blue sapphires, there are sapphires of several other colors, including green, pink, gray, and yellow.
Sapphires are most abundant in Eastern Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and East Africa.
There are also some in a few parts of North America, including Montana, and North Carolina.
