Cotton House Dress

Updated on September 5, 2014

Cotton Dusters, Loungers and House Dresses for Women

These cotton house dresses and dusters bring back the standard of looking neat, tidy and modest while staying cool and comfortable around the house.

At the end of a hot day, I like to take a cool shower and put on something neat and loose-fitting to relax on the porch and watch the sunset. A cotton house dress fits the bill.

These dresses are not just for elderly women! Many are stylish and attractive for any woman who wants a loose-fitting, modest garment to wear in the comfort of her home. Let's face it, sometimes you need something that is not quite sleepwear and not quite streetwear. You need something in between, and that is where a house dress fits the bill.

I prefer cotton, because in the summer that is the fabric that I feel keeps me cool in the heat. I am on the hunt for something pretty I can wear in the evening on the porch, when a neighbor might drop by for a chat, or my daughter's friends might be hanging out at my house. These house dresses are perfect.

Cotton Seersucker House Dress

I love this patio dress made of 100% cotton seersucker. This dress is super cool made from this fabric!

I remember, as a child, when my mother wanted to keep us cool on the hottest summer days she dressed us in seersucker. It is so light and airy, and stays looking fresh and crisp in the most hot and humid weather.

@joyceosborn: The Mu Mu was a loose, baggy dress supposedly from a style of Hawaii

Heavens, I feel so sloppy! I pull on an old Tshirt (formerly my son's) and baggy shorts in the morning. No elegance at all in my house

Oh my goodness, shades of the Fifties. My mama made her own house dresses back then, sometimes out of flour sacks. I had almost forgotten about them, but oh yes, I can remember how much she enjoyed getting out of her suit or dress after a trip to town and putting on a freshly pressed house dress, then sitting in the shade of the big old elm tree with a glass of iced tea. What memories you've brought back. I think I could go for a house dress myself, if I could find one in organic cotton. So loose and comfy!

I had to read this because my grandma used to wear these back in the day... Some of these are really pretty. They're much prettier than the ones my Oma used to wear. :)

I do love a loose, simple cotton dress. Particularly in the heat. I'm pretty shameless about where I'll wear them, too. The older I get, the lower the bar sinks for "dressed to go out"!

I'm with you - I love to take a shower then get into my comfy clothes but they need to be something I can answer the door in. Sometimes I wear a cotton dress, other times a long tee shirt and leggings. Love the Hawaiian style dresses for summer.

This is exactly what I like to wear lounging around the house on a hot summer day. I call them patio dresses. It's tough to find one that doesn't look grandmotherly. I had one from Hawaii that I wore to a frazzle. It was so comfortable, free-flowing and stylish.
