How to Get Rid of Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Dark discoloration of the skin under the eye is mainly referred to as dark circles. It is also known as dark rings or shadows.

Some of the main causes behind the formation of dark circles are heredity, aging, dry skin, prolonged crying, working for long hours in front of a computer, mental or physical stress, lack of sleep and an unhealthy diet. Both men and women of different age groups can have dark circles.

Dark circles are not a serious skin problem, but they make people look tired, exhausted, unhealthy and older. You can easily get rid of unsightly shadows under your eyes using some easy home remedies.

A number of things can cause dark circles to form underneath the eyes, so first find out What Causes Dark Under-Eye Circles to determine the reason(s).

If dark circles run in the family, the cause is genetic and there’s not much that you can do about this, but read on for ways to camouflage or at least lessen the dark appearance.

While lack of sleep isn’t one of the prominent causes of under-eye circles, insomnia (from stress and other causes) can still be factors. Also the way you sleep might contribute to under-eye circles. Keeping your head elevated can help reduce the problem.

How to Treat Them

If your circles are the result of vascular issues, double up on pillows at night to stop blood from building up under your eyes. In the morning, apply a cold compress for about five minutes to constrict the blood vessels, says Jeannette Graf, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City. Use an eye cream with caffeine, which helps constrict vessels (try Lancôme Rénergie Microlift R.A.R.E. Intense Repositioning Eye Lifter; $72, lancome-usa.com for info).

Eat well. Eat a healthy, balanced diet, take vitamins, and drink plenty of water. A whole host of cosmetic problems can be attributed to vitamin deficiencies. Dark circles and puffiness are often attributed to lack of vitamin K or inadequate antioxidants. Also, a deficiency in B12 (usually anemia-related) can result in dark circles.

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially cabbage, spinach, and other leafy green vegetables. Take a daily vitamin supplement if necessary. Get adequate fluids to improve circulation.
  • Reduce salt intake. Excess salt causes the body to retain water in unusual places, and this can result in puffiness under the eyes. Too much salt can also impair your circulation and cause the blood vessels under the skin to appear bluer.

Examine your smoking habit and decide to quit. Smoking causes vascular (blood vessel) problems that can not only threaten your life, but also make your blood vessels appear more prominent and bluer.


Relax. Relaxing might help remove sources of stress and anxiety that are preventing you from sleeping, eating and resting properly. In turn, relaxing enough will help the skin beneath your eyes to improve as you feel less stressed and more at ease. Skin tends to reflect a whole host of emotional and physical ailments, so don't dismiss the need to relax lightly.

Apply cool tea bags or an ice cube wrapped in soft cloth to your eyes daily.The tannin in tea bags reduces swelling and discoloration. Lie down, preferably in the morning, and leave the cool and damp caffeinated tea bags over your eyes for about 10-15 minutes. Keep your eyes closed. You can refrigerate them overnight so they will be ready in the morning.

Make a saline solution. Add 2 cups water with a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt and/or a half tea-spoon of baking soda in one of your nostrils. Have your head tilted to the side so that the water comes out the other nostril. It's best used when you're experiencing nasal congestion.

Use a potato. Place one uncooked potato into a liquidizer and liquidize the whole potato. Scoop out and place the pureed potato on your closed eyes .Keep it there for 30 minutes, lying on your back. Wash it off with warm water. This method works well for some people.

Use a frozen spoon. Put a spoon in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Take it out and cover the circles with it. Hold it there until the spoon is warm again.

Other smart alternatives: Arnica-based creams (found at health-food stores), which are considered to have anti-inflammatory properties, may reduce the appearance of darkness. And eye creams with green tea or grapeseed oil help strengthen capillary walls (try Replenix Intensive Eye Lightening Serum, $59,dermstore.com). You can tweak your diet, too. Flavonol-rich dark chocolate (an ounce a day) and foods full of omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, walnuts) may improve blood flow to the skin, says Lisa Drayer, a registered dietitian in New York City.

For allergy-induced circles, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine before allergies begin to abate shadows.

And, last, if thin skin is the issue, use a collagen-building cream. “One of my top go-to ingredients is retinol,” says Hirsch. “It helps increase collagen production” (one product to try is ROC Multi-Correxion Eye Treatment, $25 at drugstores). Vitamin C also encourages production and can help brighten skin tone (find it in a product such as Renée Rouleau Vitamin C Eye Serum, $42.50,reneerouleau.com). And wear sunscreen daily, says Hirsch, or you’ll cancel out the benefits from any of these treatments.

For quick circle camouflage, apply eye cream and let it dry for a few minutes. Then pat on a creamy concealer that matches your skin tone. Top with a layer of loose powder, which helps prevent makeup from caking in creases.

Massaging with coconut oil is another effective natural remedy to lighten dark circles. Due to its moisturizing quality, coconut oil also promotes smooth skin and prevents wrinkles and fine lines under eyes.

  1. Simply massage some extra-virgin coconut oil on the under eye area.
  2. Leave it on for a few hours, and then wash it off.
  3. Repeat two to three times daily for a few months or until you are satisfied with the results.

Place a couple of pillows under your head at night to stop blood from pooling under the eyes. Then splash the face with cool water first thing in the morning or use a cold compress for about five minutes to constrict blood vessels.

Turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help minimize dark circles. It will also make the skin around your eyes smoother and softer.

  1. Mix two teaspoons each of turmeric powder with pineapple juice to make a thick paste.
  2. Apply this paste to the affected area.
  3. Leave it on for about 10 minutes before wiping it away with a soft, damp cloth.
  4. Do this daily until you get positive results.

Additional Tips

  • Get adequate sleep and rest.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes too much or too often as it causes the blood vessels to dilate, thus making the under eye circles appear darker.
  • Remove your make-up before going to sleep or else it may irritate your eyes.
  • Limit sun exposure.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to get rid of water retention that could be causing the problem.
  • To avoid eye bags caused by pooling of fluids in your lower eyelids, elevate your head by adding two or more pillows under your head before going to sleep.
  • Pay attention to your diet and eat foods rich in vitamins A, C and E.
  • Stop smoking and restrict alcohol and caffeine consumption; smoking damages skin cells, and alcohol and caffeine contribute to dehydration which in turn weakens the delicate skin around the eyes.

Eye creams can be used to improve the appearance of the skin underneath the eyes.

Ingredients to look for:

Vitamin K - Dark circles can be caused by a deficiency of vitamin K. Vitamin K and retinol can help reduce puffiness and discoloration.

Retinol - (Vitamin A) is also a collagen building ingredient for thin skin.

Vitamin C – Vitamin C encourages collagen production and also brightens skin tone.

Caffeine - Caffeine is used to constrict blood vessels.

Grapeseed oil - Grapeseed oil helps strengthen capillary walls.

Green tea - Green tea also helps strengthen capillary walls.

Arnica - Arnica is an anti-inflammatory that is believed to reduce the appearance of darkness.

There are also face creams that fade discolorations and even skin tone. Be careful of creams that contain harsh chemicals, or creams that contain salicylic or glycolic acid, which can irritate the delicate eye area and possibly result in discoloration. What's the best dark circle under-eye cream?

there are several products that might hold a solution for you, but first, let's talk about why dark circles happen in the first place. Dark circles are usually the result of leaking capillaries in the fine skin under your eyes. This is not as dire as it sounds, and a lot of things can cause it: late nights, too much caffeine or alcohol, or not enough water. Last, but certainly not least, you can inherit the tendency toward dark under-eye circles from dear old mom and dad. Most of us who struggle with this problem frequently are looking at a genetic cause.

The good news is that no matter why they're there, you can treat the suckers. The bad news is that dark circles are one of the tougher problems to eliminate without -- as you mentioned -- pricey lasers. You need to take a two-prong attack here: 1. reduce the appearance of dark circles to the extent that you're able, using non-laser technology, and 2. hide what you can't fix.

First and foremost, you want to reduce any swelling in the area. My esteemed colleague, Skin Care Guide Jen Adkins, suggests cold compresses or cold spoons. I'm a cold spoon fan myself, and use them to treat my under-eye bags. It's also amusing to watch my husband try to figure out why I'm storing unused spoons in the fridge. (Don't put icy spoons right on your skin, by the way: you'll damage the tissue.)

Next, you want to try to stop the bleeding, so to speak. To halt or slow those leaking capillaries, experts suggest everything from taking a multivitamin to using creams with vitamins K, C, or B in them. Here's where you'll need to do some experimenting: I've found the under-eye area particularly tricky in terms of figuring out single solutions that work for most people.

For example, I suffer from puffy eyes. The only thing that really helps me is an eye cream with caffeine in it. But I have friends with the same issue who swear by cucumber-based creamsor even Preparation-H. I, however, have a policy that what goes on the hiney stays on the hiney, so I stick with my Clinique All About Eyes. It all depends on what works for you.

Regardless of which cream you go with, you're probably going to wind up with some residual circles that need covering. The trick, here, is to pick a very light-weight product and apply it sparingly. To this end, if you're starting your eye cream journey, I recommend giving Olay Regenerist Eye Regenerating Cream + Touch of Concealer a shot. It's cheap -- between $15 and $20 in most stores -- and it tackles both the underlying problem and the appearance issue by combining niacinamide, vitamins B5, B3, and C, and a light-weight concealer.

My only word of caution is that this product only comes in one shade, which is intended to match "most skin tones." So if you're very fair, or not of Anglo-European extraction, this might not work for you. In that case, I'd recommend starting off with a roller-ball under-eye serum, followed by your favorite concealer.

How to Cover Up Dark, Undereye Circles:

People often ask me if there's a way they can fix their dark, under-eye circles. Unfortunately, there's no way to permanently get rid of them. But the good news is you can cover them up if you follow these 5 steps.

  1. Step 1: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

    At night, use a thick cream formulated for under the eye. During the day, apply a lighter cream before you apply makeup. This will help your corrector and concealer glide on more smoothly.

    Vitamin K eye creams such as Vita-K Solution gel or Peter Thomas Roth Power K Eye Rescue can help strengthen capillary walls so dark circles and veins become less visible.

    Step 2: Apply a Corrector

    For women suffering from dark circles under their eyes, a simple concealer isn't going to work alone.

    Under-eye correctors are formulated for dark circles found under the eyes. They work by counteracting the purplish or blue circles under the eyes and they come in pink and peach shades.

    I've seen great results from Bobbi Brown's correctors, which provide extra coverage and are formulated to be used under concealer. They come in 16 shades including Bisque, which is ideal for most skin tones, and Peach, which is best for olive and dark skin tones. I recommend trying them out before buying so you find your perfect match. You can also buy it online for $25.

    To apply, simply pat in corrector with the pad of your middle finger. For best results, apply on a clean face using either a concealer brush or the pad of your middle finger. Dot the corrector at the corner of each inner eye and continue to "paint" the corrector under the eyes close to the lashes.

    Step 3: Apply a Concealer

    After your corrector is applied, you'll want to use a yellow-based concealer. Dot the concealer under the eyes and use the "pat method" to press the product into the skin.

    When choosing a concealer, I recommend a shade lighter than your skin tone. If your circles are very dark, you can go 2 shades lighter. Make sure to blend well so you don't get a raccoon look

    Step 4: Foundation Time

    Now you can apply your foundation to your face, hitting the areas that need it most. No need to cover the entire face in foundation.

    Step 5: Set Makeup With a Yellow-Based Powder

    Use a yellow-based powder to set your makeup. If you have super fair skin, use a white powder to set the concealer.

    How to Apply Eye Makeup I get compliments all the time on my evening eye makeup. My secrets to a great eye lie in eyeshadow primer (a must for anyone with greasy eyelids!), a pricey eyeshadow (drugstore brands just don't give you a rich enough pigment in my opinion. I am into Christian Dior at the moment), putting just a dab of light cream in the inside corner of my eye and heating up my eyelash curler with a blowdryer for a couple seconds so the curl is "set" better.
  2. The directions below are full of these tips and more. It really only takes 8 steps to gorgeous eye makeup.
  3. Here's How:

    1. Prep your eyes with concealer Concealer can be used to cover up under-eye circles or just the bluish discoloration just under your inner eye. To cover dark undereye circles, apply three dots of concealer under each eye. Start at the inner corner where skin tends to be darkest, then under the pupil and the third on the outer edge. Pat, never rub with your ring finger (this finger tends to have the softest pad) until the concealer disappears.
    2. Apply eyeshadow primer to your lid Eyeshadow primer is the secret to keeping your shadow in place for hours. If your eyeshadow ends up a greasy pool in your crease, you should invest in a good eyeshadow primer. Eye base will keep shadow in place through workouts, torrential rains and even a night's sleep.
    3. Follow with eyeliner You can use liquid liners or an eye pencil, but I prefer to use dark eyeshadows as eyeliners. Wet a slanted brush, then dip in a dark eyeshadow. Line eyes as close to the upper lashes as possible from the inner corner to the outer corner. Follow with liner on bottom eyes, but only line from the middle of the eye out. Smudge the bottom line with a Q-tip or your finger. You don't want a prominent line. For a smokey eye, use a brush to pat in a dark eyeshadow along the upper lid and below the lid.     4. Apply eyeshadow. It's great to use a three-toned shadow and build from lids to brow (seeHow to apply eyeshadow). Allowing them to blend into each other like a rainbow is gorgeous, according to celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. Start with a light color that almost matches your lid. Sweep the color across the lid and up to your browbone. Follow with a medium color across your lid only. Build on this with a darker color in the crease. Blend the colors well.
    5. Brighten your eyes with a highlighter This step involves only the inside part of the eye. Putting a bit of your lightest eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eye will brighten it significantly (this is the makeup artist's secret and I use this trick all the time). I usually dab a finger into my lightest eyeshadow and then I press it into the inner corner of my eye where the upper lid meets the bottom lid. This totally makes eyes "pop."
    6. Highlight your brow Take the same light eyeshadow and dab it on your browbone, concentrating on your mid-brow outward. Blend with your finger. I like to use Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Eclat just below my brow and just above it, but a super light shadow will do you.
    7. Curl lashes An eyelash curler will make even long lashes look more gorgeous. For added effect, you can heat the curler under a blowdryer for a couple seconds. Test curler before applying to lashes because you could burn yourself.
    8. Apply mascara Place the wand of your mascara brush at the bottom of lashes and wiggle back and forth. Follow with another few sweeps of the wand. Apply to bottom lashes as well. See How to apply mascara for step-by-step instruction and extra tips.

    One of Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Eclat concealers is sold every 20 seconds around the world. I bought this wondering if the hype was worth it and at first I was disappointed because it didn't do much to cover up the blue veins under my eye. Then I went to the local Saks Fifth Avenue counter to ask about it. I was told I wasn't applying it correctly.
