The Rebellious Doc Marten Lives On
Let's face it... Dr. Martens are just COOL!
Also known as Doc Martens, Doc's or simply DM's. This footwear was developed by the collaborative efforts of Dr. Klaus Maertens of Germany and Bill Griggs of R Griggs and Company of England.
The first pair of Dr. Martens was released on April 1, 1960 and famous 1460 was born. The style name was derived from this production date. This 8-eye boot in a supple cherry leather with it's flashy iconic yellow stitching is currently manufactured today.
Doc Marten's were symbolic of the working class people and were quickly adopted by many subcultures beginning with the skinheads and punk rockers in the late 1960s. Followed by Goths, new wave musicians, and hardcore punks of the 80's. Grungers and Skaters adorned the classic Doc's in the 90's. Currently, Doc's have regained their popularity yet again with the current subcultures, Indie, Bohemian, Hipster and even College Kids The main underlining theme of the Doc Marten is and always will be individuality and free thinking with a splash of rebellion..

The Full Story
I don't want to bore you with all the details
Which by the way are an interesting read and can be found on the Dr. Marten's website.
So here is my condensed version..
The famous Dr. Martens started with a humble beginning. So, two British guys Benjamin Griggs and Septimus Jones created a partnership and began making boots in 1901 in England. These boots were primarily worn by factory worker and the military. Innovator and free thinker, Bill Griggs, second generation comes on board yearning for change.
In the meantime, a foot injury from a skiing accident pushes Dr. Klaus Maertens to invent an air-cushioned sole in Münich. The sole was made from recycling discarded rubber from the Luftwaffe airfields. He begins production with Dr. Herbert Funck and they open their first factory in 1952.
After reading about this air sole in a trade magazine, Griggs gets in touch with Dr. Maertens and a legend is born on April 1, 1960. Griggs designs the leather upper with the famous flashy yellow threads to adorn the air-cushioned sole of Dr. Maertens and the rest is history.

On 1 April 1960, the first Dr. Martens boot rolled off the production line at the Griggs family farm of shoemakers in Northamptonshire, England. Today, Dr. Martens is a brand famous the world over, as iconic as Ray Bans and Levis. From the launch of the classic cherry-red eight-holer on that day in 1960, to the more recent multihued twenty-holers, Docs have been in the vanguard of style and culture for over four decades—subversive, strident, authority-baiting. Now, for the first time, the boots and their times take center stage in a book. Decade by decade, in words and pictures, Dr. Martens: The Story of an Icon recounts the fascinating story of the music, the people, and the places that breathed life into the boot on its journey from work-wear to in-wear.
Dr. Martens ... Front and Center
A huge marketing break for Dr. Martens was when Pete Townsend of the rock group the "Who" wore them on stage in the late 60's.
As he jumped around on stage choking the life out of the guitar strings, the youth watched in awe.
During a time of flower power, Townsend's look was fresh, unique and oozed with rebellion. Townshend claims he originally wore Doc's on stage for function over fashion and was drawn to the symbolism the Dr. Marten's possessed of the working class.

The Who performing Pinball Wizard with Elton John
The most famous pair of Doc's were worn by Elton John in Ken Russell's musical "Tommy."
Dr. Martens were a huge hit in England and would take some time to branch out into other parts of the world. The boots stand four and a half feet high and John had to wear a smaller boot which was attached to a larger Doc that allowed him to move as if he were on stilts. Today the boots are on display in Northampton Museum & Art Gallery in England, whose shoe collection is the largest in the world.

One of the most famous scenes in Tommy, the performance of Pinball Wizard. Enjoy!
Doc Marten uses 26,100 miles of yellow stitching every year and goes through 10 million pairs of laces annually.
Dr. Martens FINALLY come to America
As with many other fashions, the US takes awhile to come on board and Doc's finally hit the states running in 1984. Another important time for Dr. Martens was the Grunge era when sales of the rebellious boot skyrocketed as every grungy teen and young adult had to have them. Thankfully, because they have been a hit ever since.
I remember my first pair of Doc Marten's in the late 80's, a time when I most likely needed an attitude adjustment.
They were comfortable and the most worn shoe in my wardrobe, I think they are impossible to wear out. I know I gave it a good try.
Today I can truly say I am a proud mother of a Doc Marten wearing daughter, who thankfully is not in need of an attitude adjustment.

Unlike most shoes, the boot's leather upper is stitched to its sole, not glued.
Doc Martens Dark Period
In 2001 as sales declined, Dr. Marten struggled to stay afloat.
They were forced to close some factories in order to tighten things up. As a result they survived into another decade. And are still going strong today and continue to represent rebellion and self expression.

"Once the genie had been let out of the bottle back in the 1960s, the vapours of Dr. Martens' rebellious spirit could not be contained and the boot seeped into every corner and crevice of youth culture."
Martin Roach, author of the definitive history of DMs, Doctor Martens: "The Story of an Icon."
It isn't just fashionistas and film stars who like wearing Dr Martens. Pope John Paul II and the Dalai Lama have both also allegedly worn them.
