Exotic Nail Designs - Pop Culture Gift at Your Fingertips

Updated on October 22, 2013

Artsy nails are a rockin' form of expression

for girls and women who use their bodies as objects of display. Looking around at the design bedecked hands of the females waiting in a checkout line, I catch my glance going to their fingernails, wondering just how they do it!.

It was exciting to experiment

with ways of decorating my nails in the style of the day, but back then things were really simple. For me, that meant wearing bright pink Cutex brand shiny polish.

For variety I simply chose a different shade of pink, or maybe a dusty rose. Red was too bold and brassy for me - never even wore red lipstick. When I tried it I felt like I was my brilliant lips leading my body along. Just couldn't get over it.

Today's a different story, nail-wise,

I have to admit that my nails are artist' nails - far from artsy, and that's because I'm a visual artist, my fingers always dipping into paint and brushing against sandpaper. Chips and dents are the name of the game for most artists whose nails are as likely to be used as tools as to be pretty accents on their fingers.

So, noticing the moms and teens sitting with me in a recent waiting room experience, I couldn't help but admire the intricate designs on their nails. One girl had high contrast images, each nail different from the other, using a multitude of bright colors. During my online browsing today I stopped to read about some nail decorating techniques, and couldn't help but think it would be fun to create some designs of my own.

If you like to experiment, there's some fun to be had

with ready made stencils and airbrushing equipment that designed for home use. I've selected the equipment to start with. The paint stencil kit has all sorts of versions for creating fun and funky designs. They are a starting point for your personal style.

Try the stencils with the airbrush set

and the beautiful colored tape sets and get your party on!

@smine27: I completely missed out on that back in the 80s, but that was back in the outback so most things got by me.

My sister used to love glitter on her nails. I also remember her color blocking her nails with red and black. It was back in the 80s and even I thought they looked cool!

@sousababy: Yes, it sure has, and the young girls just take it for granted and some of them pull off beautiful designs. For me in the old days, no glitter, just the bare bones color.

Nail art certainly has come a long way since I was a teen (I think glittery, one color nail polish was as fancy as it ever was for me).

@Susan300: Good idea there, somehow I'm thinking that it would be fun to do the polka dots and stripes.

You forgot to put an option on the poll for the "I'd love to have nails that pretty, but most days I'm just glad if I remember to clean under them before I go out!" crowd...

Great lens, though. There is some amazing nail art out there. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into such tiny detail! :)
