Fashion Magazines-Must Reads For Aspiring Models

Updated on November 9, 2015

Top Fashion Publications For Aspiring Models

Fashion magazines are inexpensive, easily accessible, and fun to read. Monthly magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Glamour, Seventeen, Allure, and Cosmopolitan are must reads for any aspiring model. Although they all seem alike, these magazines actually have different editorial missions, readerships, and advertisers. They provide necessary information on fashion, makeup, and hair trends. They can teach you how to dress and present yourself so your best assets stand out. When you know the latest trends, you can be sure your look is current.

Vogue

Vogue is the fashion bible. It's extremely sophisticated and elegant in both look and tone. It features fashions by all the most important high-fashion designers, and it's read by everyone in the fashion industry and by some of the wealthiest, most style-conscious women in the world. Appearing in the pages of Vogue is one of the most prestigious assignments a model can land; once she graces the cover of Vogue, a model's career is pretty much made ( although these days, she's competing with celebs for the privilege.

Harper's Bazaar

Harper's Bazaar and W magazine are two other high-fashion magazines that are bold, edgy, and arty in their photography, fashions, and style. They're read by urbane, sophisticated women. They feature the high-end and most avant-garde designers and take a lot of risks in the photographers, model, and types of stories they run. The models these two magazines book tend to be very dramatic, expressive, and exotic.

Note: Kim Kardashian was a cover model and had a featured spread in the November edition of W magazines annual Art issue.

Elle

Elle is a fashion magazine that incorporates cultural and design influences from all over the world, including Africa, India, and Asia. In addition to high-end fashion, it features the work of more cutting-edge and avant-garde designers. Elle's readers are young and adventurous. The models, who are often athletic or exotic types, are often pictured in motion- running, jumping, or skipping.

Glamour

Glamour takes beauty and fashion trends from the runway and translate them for working women. The fashions it features are more practical and less expensive than the fashions in high-end magazines. Glamour is also great for learning how to take care of your skin, hair, and body, and how to apply makeup. The models are fresh, healthy, girl-next-door types.

Seventeen and Teen Vogue

Seventeen and Teen Vogue are the first fashion most girls ever read. They're geared toward young teenage girls and interpret beauty and fashion to make them accessible and appropriate for their readers. Both feature lots of helpful how-to-hints on styling your hair, taking care of your skin, dealing with acne, applying makeup, dressing stylishly, working out, and eating right. These two magazines use mainly models who are just starting out; in fact, Seventeen, which has been around since the 1940s, has launched many models careers.

Allure

Allure is the beauty magazine. It focuses on beauty trends, products, breakthroughs, and news. It keeps readers abreast of beauty trends and offers how-to-advice appyling makeup, choosing makeup colors, taking care of your skin and hair, and related topics. Allure uses a wide variety of models because it wants to show all women how to be beautiful

Cosmopolitan

Cosmopolitan is more of a life style magazine, which means it focuses more relationships, sex, jobs, self-image, and personal experiences. But its huge circulation makes an appearance in its pages or on its cover an important notch in any model's portfolio.

Final Fashion Note:

It's not necessary to buy every fashion magazine. You can browse through issues at your school library or the public library. You can also check them out at hair salons/spas and coffeehouses. If you do want to buy them, keep in mind that buying a subscription is cheaper than buyin single issues. Also, its not necessary that you try to follow every fashion trend you read about, models should be a beautiful blank slate on which clients can create their vision. The more an aspiring model knows about fashion and beauty trends, the better.Study magazines to learn about the ins and outs and do's and don'ts.

@bushaex: bushaex, most fashion magazine learned from the newspaper industry and developed an online vesion of their print publications tto boost revenues...it is still a very competitive market with so many online publications to chose from.

Thanks for visiting and commenting. I appreciate it.

As a model consultant, you clearly know what is needed and when. I have seen such an erosion in the magazine industry during the past 3-5 years, that I wonder how these magazines have fared?

@LynetteBell: Lyn Bell, you should if your neice is contemplating launching a modelng career or is just interesting in modeling for the Hobby aspect of the business.

Hobby modeling is an excellent avenue to "get ones feet wet" in the industry without incurring a lot of financial expense. Auckland is major media center that produces print, TV/Cable, and web based advertisements. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

@anonymous: SereneSea, not only is fashion a serious business, it is a global entity that touches the lives of billions of people. I have seen "Michael Jordan" T-Shirts worn by people in countries as diverse as Africa and South America, from China to India...so is the power of fashion branding in a global community. Thanks for visiting, commenting and liking my lens.

Sara_Valor, thanks for the additional information, Freecycle dot com is an excellent source to find magazines. I know a lot of professional offices such as Dentist and Doctors office will have a variety of general interest publications in addition to fashion magazines in their waiting rooms. Thanks for the comment.

An excellent listing of fashion magazines for aspiring models!

Another idea for finding any magazines that others want to get rid of but not throw away in the dump is to go to Freecycle dot com. Search for your local area and then search for such magazines in the local freecycle group. You can also make a request of such magazines in your local freecycle group.
