Fashion Savvy 2013

Updated on April 29, 2013

10 Item Wardrobe

"I have nothing to wear!"

How many times have you found yourself saying that after a day of shopping? You open up your closet and it hits you...not one thing matches!! How can that be!!

Sure, that one outfit you just bought goes together. But that's it. It goes with nothing else in your closet. Nothing mixes. Nothing matches. That's got to be one of the biggest challenges when it comes to shopping for women. And the most frustrating.

In this lens I'm going to show you how you can be Fashion Savvy and coordinate your outfits to get the most mileage out of them. Heck, there's even a 10 item wardrobe that coordinates together to look like 20 outfits. That's right. If you buy the right 10 item wardrobe you can make it into 20 different looks.

No second guessing. No disappointing buyer remorse. Just a 10 Item Wardobe.

10 Items = 20 outfits.

~Gilda Radner~

Pretty Coordinated in Pink

This outfit is a great example of effortless color coordination. The shoes match the blouse and the blazer matches both. One of the biggest mistakes we can make in color coordinating an outfit is adding too many shades of one colour or too many colours to the whole ensemble.

The Key to Building a Wardrobe

Learn How to Mix and Match

We're all guilty of it. We start off in the morning in great spirits, excited we're going shopping and anxious to add some life to our wardrobe. We spend hours trying on items, finally deciding on some gorgeous pieces, only to come home and find they don't go with anything.

We still love them of course, but the excitement has now turned into a little bit of buyer remorse. We have a couple of choices:

1. We can return them (and oh, please don't tell me I have to stand in those lines again!)

2. We can put them in our closet and hope to learn from our mistakes

3. We can learn How to Mix and Match once and for all !!

I'd never be the one to tell someone they shouldn't go with their instincts in developing their own fashion style. Being yourself is a great thing. But face it, sometimes we have no idea what "our own style" is.

Our closets are a hog wash of florals, plaids, checks in all different colors of the spectrum.

Getting ready in the morning to go to work or out for an evening is a chore and a headache!

We end up hating shopping!

You don't have to. With just a couple of "know-hows" you can be on your way to a closet that's under control and a more fashion savvy shopping experience.

There's no secret to looking this put together. The straight lines of the garments spell "long and lean" , no matter what size you are. There's only 4 items in this outfit and she looks fantastic. Often times, simplicity is best.

Savvy Rules to Live By

  • Get rid of the clutter in your closet. If you haven't worn it in a year, give it away or box it away. You can't coordinate a wardrobe with a million different colors and patterns.
  • Decide on a neutral palette. Build your wardrobe from there. Try to work with two or three colours at the most.
  • It doesn't have to be boring. Look at accessories in a new light. Scarves, bangles, earrings and necklaces can add a lot of a monochromatic wardrobe. Perhaps your wardrobe is centred around browns, taupes and whites. You can add a splash of color with orange bangles or earrings. Or pink. Or even yellow. Be creative!

6 Items - 4 Colors - Anything but Boring!

There's only four colors used in this "casual to work" ensemble but the Mix and Match looks are anything but boring!! In fact, you could have a whole monochromatic wardrobe in different hues of the same color and it would still look wonderful.

The key is choosing graduations of the same color to give your outfit some contrast.

Here's 6 Items. I can get over 12 looks - can you find them?

Wardrobe Basics

When I was young it was drilled into my head "all you need is a good pair of shoes and a good handbag".

And I still believe in that advice. Invest in those pieces and you'll always look well-dressed.

Of course, I also say "throw in a great pair of jeans and a white blazer that goes with everything and you're all set!"

I LOVE True Religion! And I love these jeans - with heels, flat pumps or sandals, even a nice boot.

The white blazer that goes from office to jeans is a must for any summer wardrobe. Toss it over a floral sundress or pair it with jeans and a tank.

Black & white is IN this year! Pair it with a white shirt or jacket and you've got a great look and a classic wardrobe addition!

Hottest Color of 2013

"Flesh-tone" is one of the hottest colors of 2013 and here it is looking smoking hot with black tights and high-heeled ankle booties.

Change up the mood by adding black riding boots, flat boots or a flat pump.

"Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.”

~Marilyn Monroe~

"Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman."

~Chanel~

Color coordination is the key to looking hip and stylish. When you're choosing what to wear, don't only think of color though. Think also of the weight of the fabric, the lines of the clothes and how it all blends and balances together.

Colorblock Stripe Bodycon Dress

No better way to make a statement than in a figure-accentuating bodycon dress and high-impact stripes. Try this bebe dress with a denim jacket for day and your highest pair of heels for evening.

Being savvy is also being yourself. Breaking the rules once in awhile. Experimenting. Somehow, it looks natural.

But until you do, start with two or three colors you can manage. Once you feel comfortable, add to the spectrum.
