Gifts for Hipsters

Updated on November 22, 2014

Gift ideas for the Hipsters

Finding Gifts for Hipsters really shouldn't be that challenging. But, first we need to totally understand what a Hipster is. Not exactly sure myself I decided to scour the internet, talk to all my friends, my kids friends, and quite frankly to anyone who would listen to find out just what a Hipster is. Here are some of the facts I knew as I began my quest. Hipsters generally appreciate the more simple things in life. They definitely oppose anything mainstream or trendy, (don't even mention these words around a hipster, it will only send them into a rant). The trend or style of a hipster seems to generated from previous era's fashion faux pas, and contorting them into a jumbled mess.

Think of these words when you think hipster: retro, vintage, bohemian, underground, and alternative. Now try to Picture this... Thick black rimmed glasses, super skinny jeans almost cutting off the circulation in their calves, a fedora, cotton scarf wrapped around their neck, no matter how hot it is outside, an ugly blouse with a pattern from the 70's, a pair of good ole' chucks, complete with an Apple product in hand and you have yourself a Hipster.

What is a Hipster? - Will the REAL Hipster Please Stand Up

I'm not sure anyone actually knows what a hipster really is. During my quest to find this information, I have NOT run into one person who claims to be a Hipster. If anything they tend to deny the fact, even though they share some of the typical styles and attributes. Some of these people even seemed a bit offended by my question. YIKES! Why is this so difficult, and why doesn't anyone want to admit that they are a Hipster? I immediately turned to Urban Dictionary for some help, figuring they ought to know.

Official Quote from Urban Dictionary

"Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter."

Well, that doesn't sound so bad. I imagine this:

"A stubbly faced guy wearing my grandfathers sweater with skinny jeans, vans and one of those Elmer Fudd style hats discussing the events of an upcoming Weezer concert, complete with Starbucks in hand."

It's all really pretty simple

The Hipsters are here to stay.

A true Hipster would never admit to even being Hipster. The term Hipster has been placed on this group by our society and even dates back to the 20's. These people are not afraid to do what they want, wear what they want and just be who they want. They really do not care what others think!!!

They don't seem to be all that bad to me. Did I mention, they LOVE cats!

I have one of the old black typewriters and I love to open the wood case it is in every now and then just to give it a little sniff. It smells so nice. When I saw your opening photo I almost cracked up. Love it!

I learned a lot about hipsters! Maybe they are children of hippies. I'll have to ask my son if he considers himself a hipster.

Awesome lens, but why is it that hipsters are always skinny? I have yet to see an overweight hipster. Not good or bad but just an observation worth throwing out there.

The term "hipster" actually began with the "Dada Movement" in the early 1900s (around 1920s to 1930s in the US, earlier in Europe). It was them picked up by the "Beat Generation" (1940's to 1950s) later to change to the "Beatniks". In the 1960s the ghetto players mostly black population picked it up. Wasn't used much by the hippies in the 60's. You can take it from there. I believe it is a term that will remain with us regardless of the generation. It is a term usually used by the uncool about the cool. There you have it. Your trivia history for the day from an old fart that remembers. Fun lens. Enjoyed my visit.
