"Mommy and Me" Fashions

Updated on September 10, 2014

Memories of 'Mommy and Me'

I vividly remember watching Mother sitting at the sewing machine creating us a new 'mommy and me' outfit.

I would imagine how special I would be dressed as her.

The aniticipation would build and my expectations were never disappointed.

Mother and I shared a special relationship, especially since I was the first girl after 3 boys. Looking like her only increased that bond for me.

She and I still share a special bond as mother and daughter and we do share the same taste in clothing, but we have long out grown the 'mommy and me' fashions.

It's now a tradition that I am able to carry on with my own daughter.

'Mommy and me' fashion outfits are the fun and simple statements of love shared between mothers and their children, a special bond shared and expressed.

I will share with you a few simple ideas to create 'mommy and me' outfits, memories from other mothers, on-line shopping for mommy and me clothing and a few blogs discussing this topic.

I would enjoy hearing from you as well. Do you have a story, an idea or comment to share? Then let's hear from you.Traveling down memory lane keeps those traditions alive and I'd like to invite you on the journey.

Come along and let's see where we go.

Nobody knows of the work it makes to keep the home together. Nobody knows of the steps it takes. Nobody knows-but Mother.

I Want to Look Like you Mommy

Matching Mommy. Enjoy it while you can, these days don't last long

What greater compliment can a parent receive from chldren than wanting to mimick their parents?

When little girls get to wear the big girl fashions with a juvenile flair or boys wearing a matching tie with Dad, oh how big they feel.

Fun prints, cool color combos are fresh and festive for a girl of any age.

Styles can stay as different as your personalities. Having outfits in matching colors gives that immediate illusion of looking like Mom or Dad.

There are no hard fast rules to any 'mommy and me' fashionable outfits, so let's look at a few ideas to create a quick and easy 'Mommy and Me' look.

Quick Matching Ideas

Warm Weather Ideas:

  • Bathing suits or beach wraps of the same color.
  • Handbags can easily say "I match Mom" by using a large and small version.
  • Skirts in the same fabric.
  • Shoes of the same color and add some matching bling. Girls always love sparkle.

Matching Yet Different:

  • A fun idea if you make your own clothes, is start with a main fabric for an adult and introduce a coordinating piece for your child.Even just using fabrics in the same color family still keep the outfits matched as a grouping.

Cold Weather Ideas:

  • Matching coat, hat, glove or scarves

Special Occasions:

  • Just like the bride and her bridal party, wearing matching outfits to a wedding.
  • Going out for the evening with outfits made of similar fabric.

Men Fashion:

  • Matching neckties instantly connects Dad and son.
  • Matching vest
  • Same color shirt

Simple little details as these creates immediate connection to the outfits between a parent and their child.

What Mother's are Saying...

I use to wonder if I were the only one out there that appreciated the 'mommy and me' idea. I couldn't imagine that I was so I went searching and found several comments on the topic.

From Couture Allure Fashion Blog read what one mother's memory of a vintage 'Mommy and Me' look means to her and how it speaks to her.

From other articles I've read comments such as "I love that they want to show their pride in me and vice-verse!".

Then there was a mom that said "Mommy and me fashions can be something really cool, if it is done with taste and design in mind. It has to suit the mom and the daughter."

Yet another mother had expressed her appreciation for 'Mommy and Me' fashions as "celebrating the bond between mother and daughter".

These and many others are waiting for your own discovery in how wonderful and special it is to capture this time in your child's life. It all starts at home and it doesn't last very long.

If you have something to say on the topic be sure to leave your comments below. Please remember this is a 'G' rated commentary so let's be nice, I've seen comments on both sides and if you don't like it it's okay just say it in a nice way.

As my Momma used to say "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all." Truth? I get to monitor the comments here anyway. Just saying...

Hi SusanDeppner; Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting. Lovely memories indeed!! Plus love the notion of anticipated 'sewing machine' time in your future.

My mother made most of my clothes for many years, well into elementary school, and I'm sure we had a few "mommy and me" looks. I have sons and I'm hoping that someday there will be a granddaughter in the family. I have a feeling there will be a lot of sewing machine time when that happens. Thanks for the lovely article, ideas, and memories!

@amandascloset0: Hi amandascloset, I would agree there are very few outfits beyond the toddler stage...Some times things I have done in the past, as one of my pictures shows, is we just wear maybe same color outfits and we split a jewelry set, but those days are loooooong over for me. Sad but enjoyed them while I got them. Thx for stopping by.

It seems the matching Mommy / Daughter things are so hard to find once they passed the toddler stage. Love this lens!

Until I figured out that many people bought clothes from a store, my mother made all my clothes. I think the Mommy and Me was because there was always extra fabric for her dress and mine. I had better clothes than my friends with embroidery and smocking but I wanted store bought clothes. Looking back, the handmade clothes were better and I did like the matching. Thanks for the trip back in time.

aww this is such a cute idea! When I have baby one day, I would love my baby girl and me to wear the same kind of clothings when ever possible. [Not if it turns out to be a boy though :P]..Thank you for sharing those lovely mommy and girl fashion tips.

So cute. My mother and I never did dress alike (maybe because there has always been a big difference in our shapes and styles). My daughter though loves most of the same clothing I do and even though she is now 6" taller than me, she still loves to wear my clothes. Every year for Christmas we get a matching pair of flannel PJ's that we both wear out eventually. We've bought matching skirts and t-shirts because we both we're crazy about them. She's now 16 and still dresses very similar to me.

Love this post for matching mother and daughter items. I think it is very fun to match at this age with your toddler. Girls love to be their mommies' mini me at this age and they grow out of it so fast! I like to enjoy the moment while it lasts! My daughters inspired me to come up with the idea of matching shoes. I had to return to my full time office position after giving birth to my second baby girl. Being a mother of 2 under 2, with a busy work schedule, I was in search of something that would offer a "connection" that could carry on all day between me and my babies. Please stop by my website to explore matching mommy and me shoes: www.pairendipity.comIf you like them, please help me spread the mommy and me joined at the shoe with love. Have a lovely day!

Great lens. Thanks for sharing your story. It's reminded me about my mom and how creative she was... I had a special mother and daughter bond with my mother too... But interesting thing that she never made matching clothes for us, even opposite - as different as possible, but to suit our needs. That was done with one thought in mind: to show how different and unique each of us was...

@Michey LM: Amen to that. My mom is 81 and we don't live in the same area any longer, wishing we could spend more time together. I suppose reliving these memories keeps her close. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice lens honoring the memory of your mother... sometime we don't realize but parents are the first influence in our life and a very powerful one. We start imitating our parents, then teachers, friends, celebrities ... are inevitable roll models as well. This lens resonate with me because I have a special relation with my mother... she is 96 now, living with me, and still educating me. If I say something she doesn't like it... she will put me in my place immediately... but with grace, humor, and love so I don't mind.

It has been a real trend to wear the same clothes as our moms in the past and it seems it's becoming a new kind of fashion tendency theses days - although young generations believe they invented it, lol.I don't clearly remember having worn the same clothes as my mother but when I look at old pics, I can see that, indeed, they were quite similar...

Chico's used to have a "chicettes" (sp?) line. I bought a few tee shirts for my granddaughter. Fun stuff. My granddaughter also has a pair of white Capri pants that are very similar to a pair I have. She loves to wear them when I wear mine. She is 6 years old and a charming little lady.
