Many women 50-60 experience thinning hair due to menopause and hormonal changes. A short haircut with different length layers can help add volume and fullness to your hairstyle.

Some women can also start to experience health problems as they age. Short hairstyles for ages 50-60 are nice because they are easy to maintain and style. You can look great without spending too much time styling your hair.

The Best of Everything After 50

Empty nest syndrome, hot flashes, and extra weight gain, who has time for a new hairstyle?

Read this women's journey to staying fabulous and beautiful for another half a century.

Susan Sarandon

I'm not sure if it is the haircut that makes Susan Sarandon so sexy or the other way around. Susan Surandan is absolute bombshell. She is a great example of a woman that is constantly changing it up. Sometimes we just need a new look to feel sexy again.

A Real Woman Over 50

Yes all of the beautiful women and celebrities are real women but most women over 50 do not have access to a hairstylist or makeup artist. I would like to introduce you to the most gorgeous women over 50 I know, my mom.

What does she want in a new hairstyle?

She wants her hair to look good right out of the shower. She works full time and doesn't always have time to blow dry or curl her hair.

She wants a hairstyle that adds volume and lift because she has thin straight hair.

Here she has a hairstyle with long layers just below the shoulders with bangs.

My Mother's Tips for Staying Young

I will be very lucky to inherit my mother's genes. She is a physically fit and fashionable women over 50. Here are her tips for staying young and fabulous.

  • Be happy!! Find joy in everything you do. My mother lives to spoil her grandchildren.
  • Stay active. My mother became a runner in her thirties and is currently training to march a marathon.
  • Eat all things in moderation. My mother has never been one for diets or fads. She loves pizza, chocolate and Coca-Cola but she eats a sensible diet full of meats, cheese, fruits and veggies.
  • Embrace change. My mother is constantly trying new hairstyles and lipstick colors. She made a major life change when she moved cross country six years ago to be near her grandchildren.

Long Hairstyles

Short hairstyles are convenient but many women prefer to keep their hair long. Here are a few tips for keeping your long hair healthy and shiny.

Trim your hair regularly.

Eat healthy. Your hair is a reflection of what you are putting into your body.

Use a good conditioner. Your hair can start to thin as you grow older a good conditioner can add volume and keep your hair soft and shiny.

Don't be afraid to try new products. I love trying natural hair remedies. I have conditioned my hair with avocado, mayonnaise, beer and apple cider vinegar. I didn't love all of them but some have become a regular part of my beauty regiment.

I really like Susan Sarandon's hairstyle, maybe because I prefer long hair over short hair. My mom is over 50 and she likes to keep her hair real short.

In my early 60's and transitioning from a dark brown color to coloring that is a lighter brown at base and with lots of highlights... this helps to "camoflauge" the grey (as I am not quite ready to go all grey yet :)) I like the short pixie styles with lots of layering. Thanks for the ideas

You made a good point....not all of us go to the hairdresser so want something that is easy to care for. I like sort of short hair, but it looks horrible on my, so right around shoulder length is good :)
