Updated on August 10, 2016

Gothic Makeup

To get the Gothic makeup look, you will want to learn the proper way of applying it.

The Goth style is very different from everyone else, so to get this look you will need to get the right makeup, tools and step by step instructions to achieve this look.

Here you can find essential Gothic eye makeup tips, Gothic makeup application ideas and useful advice, which will help you to create your own Gothic look.

Gothic Makeup Instructions

Create a glamorous, fashionable Gothic look.

There are lots and lots of types of Gothic makeup looks to choose from. Not every look has pale white makeup, some wear just regular foundation. Gothic makeup can look bad if done incorrectly. But it can look great if it is done well.

The following are some ideas on how to do it well.

With Gothic makeup the colors are mainly white face makeup (but not always white), black eye liner and black or dark red lips, red, purple or blue eye shadow, other dark colors are used too. But, the whole point to getting a Gothic makeup look is to have fun with it. Find your own look. There really aren't many rules to doing the Gothic makeup look except to do it well. Just play around and find your look.

Step 1 - To start your look you will need white or very pale ivory foundation. Apply the foundation to your entire face and neck. Use a translucent powder to set your makeup. Next cheek color is optional, but if you want to create a look of death you can use a black powder to create the sunken in cheeks. Most Goth makeup doesn't have cheek color at all.

Step 2 - Next you will want to do your eyes. The eyes are most important in the Gothic makeup look because you want to look very dramatic. So get a good quality black eyeliner. This will be essential in getting that really dark and mysterious look.

Step 3 - Apply the black eyeliner all inside the inner rim of your eyes. Then apply the liner all along the lash line of your entire eyes. You can extend it out and make artistic shapes and fun costume looks. This part is fun because you can do fantasy eyes.

You can use a pencil eyeliner or a liquid eyeliner. Make sure you apply the black liner heavy because this is all about Drama!

Step 4 - Then when you are finished applying your eyeliner you will want to do the shadow. You can do the smokey eye makeup look (here is a tutorial on smokey eyes) or just apply a dark color to the lid. Red is really dramatic!

Step 5 - And now for the lips. You can use black or blood red. Line your lips with a black liner or deep red, then apply your lipstick. Make sure you apply the lipstick with precision. It is important to get a dramatic look to your lips.

Now you are finished with the makeup. You can add some face or nose jewelry to complete your look. If you don't want to wear face jewelry, you can apply rhinestones with adhesive or glitter works well too.

Gothic Lifestyle

The Goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries. It began in England during the early 1980s in the Gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the Post-punk genre. The Gothic lifestyle is a different one indeed. If you are just dabbling in the look and lifestyle of a Goth and are new, I suggest you start with just a little bit of makeup and clothing in the beginning.

I am personally not a Goth, but I am fascinated with them and love the excitement, romance and the artful way they express themselves. I have a few friends that are into this lifestyle and I don't really mind the way they look at all. Not all Goths are into death. Some people find this lifestyle offensive, but I just think of it as a way to express themselves.

There are different kinds of Goths. There is Cyber Goth, Vampire Goth, Emo Goth, Steam punk Goth, Romantic Goth and more.

Interesting, not really my style but interesting. I often see this kind of makeup on metal concerts, sometimes it is scary:) but often really cool.
