How to Style Leggings

Leggings are not pants, neither are they tights. Looking good in them involves selecting the best tops and shoes to pair with.

They are best worn with clothes that cover your bottom. Wearing them as pants is like venturing out in sports wear or underwear. They are not a complete outfit and you can only wear them as a component of another attire.

Before deciding how to wear your leggings, be sure they will go well with your body type. While most items of leg wear, including stockings, are fashionable if you wear them the right way, they can also produce a shapeless outcome. If you have slender legs, a huge bust and big hips, legwear might not be okay with you. If you must wear them, consider wearing a mid-calf skirt or dress. It is good advice to have in mind what items among your clothing will go with leggings before you can buy a pair.

To have a great look, you need to first choose a nice pair that fits your legs. Having several pairs is a good idea because they are easy to style and also go with many of your outfits. Very tight legwear will make your legs bumpy, while very loose ones may result in a worn out look. The correct size of leggings has a smoothening effect on the legs. If leggings are loose-fitting, use them when gardening or doing house work.

Depending on your other clothes, you can choose different lengths of leggings. They come in a variety of lengths ranging from just below the knee to above ankle. If you are short and can’t find your correct size, there are many ways of putting on your leggings. One strategy is to tuck them under boots and roll or fold as may be necessary. Another way is to wear full-coverage underwear and tuck your legwear under the pant-line. This will bring them to the required height.

Fishnets can go with skirts or dresses, depending on the occasion. You can also pair them with stockings, tights, or another pair of leggings underneath. For a fabulous look, the hosiery underneath should be opaque or translucent. The outer pair can be sheer or patterned to reveal the one under. Colors for both legwear can clash so as to produce a contrasting effect.

What Top to Wear With Leggings

Tops that look good are those that cover your bottom. The ideal length is mid-thigh. Shirts that fall to your hip area look ridiculous. In that case, crop tops are not suitable. Tank tops and camisoles are great if they are long enough.

Oversized tops do not necessary look good if they are too wide. They should be long but not overly wide and shapeless. On the other hand, form-fitting tops lack the required balance. You should only wear them if you pair with dresses or skirts. A tight top with a skater miniskirt and leggings is a cute outfit.

Bold, bright color leggings go better with a plain, solid shirt or tee. A print or bright top does best with neutral leggings. For patterned leggings, choose a top that matches any of the colors in the print. Avoid patterned leggings and printed tops as they produce a pajama effect. People might think you went out in your sleep wear. Shiny leggings in most cases do not pair nicely with shirts. The gloss produces nonexistent bumps and bulges.

Types of tops that pair best include tunic tops, chambray, boyfriend tees peplum tops and boyfriend sweaters. Some versions of men’s and denim shirts are long enough to cover your buttocks and are therefore look good with hosiery. Blazers, cardigans and tuxedo jackets are also great in cold weather.

How Long Should a Shirt Be to Wear With Leggings?

How long your shirt should be is simply a matter of covering your bottom. The mostly accepted length is mid-thigh. Your shirt must be able to conceal your buttocks even when you are leaning. If the length of shirt that fits this height seems out of proportion, wearing a belt over it may do the magic of ensuring proper equilibrium.

Unless you are wearing a dress or skirt, care should be taken to avoid flashing your underwear. Some leggings are opaque but become almost transparent when stretched. To be on the safer side, lean forward to touch the floor with one hand and feel with your other arm if your top covers your pant line.

How to Wear Leggings to Work

Leggings are not suitable in most formal business settings like banks and accounting firms. However, they are okay if put on under dresses or skirts to complete a conservative outfit. One question you should ask yourself is whether it is necessary to wear them anyway. If other members of your workforce bring them to the office with nobody minding, then you can wear them. If nobody else wears them, they are probably not appropriate in your employment.

While a hairstylist may wear leggings as professional attire, this does not automatically imply that they are acceptable office attire. Shiny or patterned ones are particularly not appropriate as professional office wear. They are perfect as casual or street wear. They can also be part of an evening or club attire.

In some places of work, Fridays are considered business casual days. The dress code is somewhere in between professional attire and street fashion. Although ladies may be allowed to dress down a little bit on such days, you should steer clear of any outfit that might be considered as offensive to your workmates. The ideal is to be fashionable but not sluttish or trying to attract too much attention. Discretion is the key. What is proper in certain work environments may not work in others.

Generally speaking, all skin-tight clothes that you normally use for biking or riding may not be correct even for a business casual look. My final word on this subject is; if you consider yourself a pro and would like people to take you as a serious business minded person, opt for trousers, pants or jeggings instead.

How to Wear Leggings If You Are Plus Size or Over 50

How other females wear their leggings may not be the ideal thing for you. Girls below 14 years may look amazing with a short top or a micro miniskirt and leggings, even when viewed from any angle. But a woman of over 40 would have to think twice before going outside the house in such apparel. If you would look strange without your leggings, you are probably showing so much and people might wonder what happened to your other clothes.

Young girls and celebrities may easily get away with wearing almost anything, or nothing, even in public events. What may be seen as sluttish to ordinary people may be nicely attractive for them. Consider how celebs wear sheer dresses which are not appropriate even for street style or evening wear. When wearing leggings, think of it like putting on a pair of waisted stockings.

Leggings are one of the trickiest and most confusing items of clothing. Before you can emulate how others wear them, be sure that you will be comfortable and confident in your outfit, without being offensive to others. Remember that not all fashions are fashionable to everyone. Looks are bound to change from one person to another. Nonetheless, any woman can wear them regardless of body type without looking outrageous.

Plus size ladies can look best in leggings if they can move the focus away from problem areas. One way is to choose a pair that will not reveal stretch marks or cellulite. Second is to wear clothing with tummy control panel if you have a big belly. Some leggings have thick waistbands up to 20 cm, and can also help in tummy support. Wearing a belt and boots will complete the outfit.

The best way to wear leggings if you are elderly is to wear a complete outfit first. That is, wear your normal skirt or dress and make sure you look good. Then, accessorize with any leggings of your choice. Plus size ladies look fabulous if they wear them under a mini skirt that reaches to just above knee. Any skirt longer than that would still be better. But avoid a mid-calf skirt as it would make you look wider.

Metallic, gloss and nude leggings are the most difficult to pair. If you want a pair that is easy to style and goes with most of your clothes, buy neutral or dark colors. Black ones are much favored by most ladies as they can be worn with virtually any color outfits. Avoid black leggings and a black top or dress unless you can accentuate with other colors.

Finally, don’t overdo on accessories like jewelry or makeup. Try to find the right balance between the style and height of your leggings and your other clothes. It makes little sense to wear leggings that reach to just below knee and a skirt or dress that falls just above the knee. If you can seriously follow these fashion tips, I can assure you that you will have unlocked a new and stylish way of wearing leggings.

Indeed Lifeswirl, most outfits can be worn by almost all body types and ages if done the right way. As they say, anything can be sexy, even long gowns. But virtually all clothes can be modest but stylish when worn a certain way.

Honestly I haven't worn leggings in my entire life, but your tips about how to pair leggings with other clothing makes me think about finally wearing one (I'm no longer young and I have problem areas indeed, I need to look slimmer than I actually am!). A black pair of leggings will do best for a start. Thanks for the great tips!
