It has Occurred to Me that My New Outfit Looks Rather More Like a Superhero Costume

But I don't care! I have done it! I am so excited. I have put together such a fun outfit that screams me. It kinda looks like a costume. Okay, it really looks like a costume, but that is okay. I have metamorphosed into Blue Morpho Girl.

Normally, I am more of an in-the-background introverted type of person. However, occasionally, I have been known to be slightly extroverted. In fact, I actually scored as "slightly extroverted" on a formal homeland security personality test (which is another story for another day). This bold fun fashion statement is proof of that past test score. I give you me as Blue Morpho Girl.

I did not intend putting this outfit together as an idea for my own personal super hero costume. It happened by accident over time. I actually just wanted the get-up for one of my everyday normal outfits. Seeing all the pieces come together in my mind and how it all related to me so well made me think, "Oh my goodness! All I need is a mask! I'm Blue Morpho Girl."

First, I'll show you Morpho didius, and my outfit (*cough* costume), and then I'll continue with the story of how Blue Morpho Girl came to be and where she may be headed.

Here is Morpho Didius - One of the Blue Morpho Butterfly Species

Is this butterfly gorgeous or what!

Morpho didius is one of 24 species of the blue morpho butterflies. They are truly gorgeous all with a deep blue iridescent coloring, and they are giants. They measure up to just under 6" across.

They are unique butterflies too in that they fly by night. This is not unheard of but highly uncommon for butterflies. It is the iridescence that allows them to find each other in the dark. The iridescence shimmers under the moonlight. That is about one of the most magical things I've ever learned.

Gold With Blue Accents Venetian Butterfly Mask

* This is the mask I've settled on. It is beautiful and done in laser-cut Venetian style.

* It's primarily blue with signature white dots found on a few of the morpho butterfly species.

* Now, I'm not going to wear it on my face. I have really long black hair. So, I'm going to wear it on top of my head like a headband or a pair of shades. I don't need to cover my face. I am like Iron Man.

Without Further Ado, Here is my Basic Outfit

- from top to bottom

We start with the mask. Isn't it beautiful!

Second, we go to the top and bottoms. Both are simple, comfortable all black pieces. The top is loose fitting, long enough to cover you-know-where and has a great feminine, pretty cut. The bottoms are a pair of leggings that aren't too tight. I want them to look like pants more than tights. Both pieces are elegant and not trashy. Never add more than 10% trash to your look, and for me, that is even too much!

Then, we add the accessories. I know. The footwear should be next, but I'm saving that part for last. It is the best part of the outfit, and it is how the whole superhero costume came about. The shoes are what made the light bulb go off in my head (and my much needed new metamorphosis).

So, the accessories include a pendulum necklace, a crystal wand that I tuck in my shoe and a ring. I thought about adding earrings, and there are some really great ones to choose from. However, I thought adding earrings but me a bit much. So, for the neck up, there is the necklace and the mask. That's it. Besides, my hair is so long that earrings hardly show anyway.

  • You'll have to keep reading and scrolling to see the shoes!!

* Blue topaz symbolizes healing, and it is also referred to as "The Writer's Stone"

More About Blue Morpho Girl's Accessories

The Accessories are Actually Tools

The ring - I was not sure about adding a ring. However, I have think it is a good idea, and I have settled on a blue topaz ring with a sterling silver band. Blue topaz is a stone of healing and is often commonly referred to as the writer's stone. (Besides, "Wonder Twin powers! Activate! - get it? - a reference to a superhero cartoon from years ago.)

The crystal wand - (*gotta have a wand!*) The wand is made from lapis lazuli, and it has a quartz point on one end and a quartz crystal skull on the the other end. It's really pretty and fitting. Lapis lazuli and blue stones in general symbolize communication and are associated with the throat chakra. Skulls symbolize death and rebirth. Quartz symbolizes purity. Therefore, a crystal quartz skull symbolizes purity and positiveness in transformation. The wand symbolizes purity and positiveness in transformation through communication. I wear the wand in my boot off to the side with just the skull visible.

The necklace - I attach a pendulum to a chain and wear it as a necklace. The pendulum is multifaceted and made of lapis lazuli just as the wand is, and pendulums are used to aide in healing and divining the future.

Why Blue Morpho Girl?

It all Started Long Ago....

Again, "Blue Morpho" is a reference to the blue morpho butterfly.

My whole idea is so comical to me, especially since I can see where this all stems from so long ago. I feel as if my life has been one big preparation for Blue Morpho Girl. Yes, if you sensed some sarcasm, you sensed correctly.

It all started long ago. I have always loved all creatures big and small. When I was little, I was really attracted to the tiny ones. This never changed. Then, when I was 16 years old, I actually got to work with them! I worked at the Insect Zoo at the Smithsonian at the Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. This is where I first discovered the beautiful deep blue iridescent butterfly, Morpho didius well over 20 years ago. It is one magical looking butterfly!

Recently, I finally got to see one of the blue morpho butterfly species at the Butterfly Conservatory at the Boston Museum of Science. There were several, and to see them alive fluttering about was a dream come true.

I've written about both of these stories before. So, I won't bore you and elaborate with too many details. If you'd like to read them. You may do so here and here and even here.

What Does Blue Morpho Girl Symbolize?

The Meaning of Butterflies and a Celebration of Women

Wonderful meaning and symbolism surrounds butterflies.

Butterflies most commonly symbolize a process of transformation. They have a very distinct life cycle. They begin as a larva and then bloom into beauty after a period of hard work, patience, and rest. For me, I see this transition period as very similar to a woman's middle years portion of life.

In our culture, we tend to think as women as being most beautiful while they are young in years, very young in years. I don't agree with this. For me, a woman's true beauty comes with having experienced many years on this planet. It's all the experience of living life and gathering wisdom that radiates out from within. To me, the cocoon stage is mid-life. Mid-life is a time when we re-evaluate all we've done and finally have an understanding of who we really are. Only when a woman emerges from her cocoon, does she get to be truly stunning.

More About How the Outfit Came Together

I'll begin with "thank you's."

I've established how much I love blue morpho butterflies.

I have to say thank you to Jeremy Scott for designing these wedge boots. This is the one item that makes Blue Morpho Girl spring to life. If I hadn't come across these, I don't believe she would have evolved into fruition. Yes, I could have chosen fairy-style shoulder wings, but no. I like this "Mercury" style of zooming around a lot more.

I also have to say thank you to Luly Yang for her inspiring this outfit as well. Her evening fairy tale blue morpho butterfly gown was a huge inspiration for me in bringing about Blue Morpho Girl. Not only is Luly Yang's dress design an inspiration, but her personal story is as well.

Jeremy Scott's Fabulous Wedge Wing Boots

Yes! Here are the boots.

I finally have them. They are very comfortable, but a bit high. I had to practice a little at home before I could start wearing them in public. They are somewhat pricey. However, they are extremely well made and also becoming quite the collector's item. People seem to either really love them or really despise them. There is no in between! Oh well, more fun for me.

They were available on Amazon, but they sold out fairly quickly. Only a limited number of these wedge boots were made. (I know. You are either thinking, "No #*%&!," or "Of course! They're awesome!") Now, there are several pairs available through eBay. I know this too, as I had searched high and low.

  • Please note - Order them in your next size up. They run small, and this is typical for high wedge style shoes.
