Japanese Hand Fans

Updated on February 4, 2015

History of hand fans

It is believed that the first hand fans were made in China 3000 years ago. At first they were used to cool down masters by their slaves and they were made from palm leaves. Hand fans represented status symbol and privilege. Their semi-circular shape is considered very lucky. Many cultures, including the Chinese, Japanese and Spanish instinctively associate hand fans with romance and elegant women. Throughout history hand fans had different purposes: to scare away flies, for cooling and of course flirting.

Some of the first fans were made from goose feather. Exotic pieces made from feathers pheasants, hawks, falcons and roosters were used for cooling high and privileged class. Fan made of horse hair or game represented a status symbol of male rulers.

On numerous drawings in Egyptian temples are the characters that keep fans: from simple palm branches to large and majestic fans that were used for refreshment in hot and dry conditions, and they were used for ceremonial purposes. The Chinese probably have the oldest records of continuous production of hand fans. They have a lot of kinds of fans and all of them have their name, while the term shan is used for all types. In sixth century fans are coming to Japan, where the first folding fan was mad - hiogi. There were three basic folding hand fans: the fan adorned with feathers, classic folding fan (uchiwa or OCI) covered with fabric, and so called hokkan fan (in Europe known as brise).

These are great. My wife always carries a small hand fan in her handbag. No need to worry about running out of batteries - and it looks nice into the bargain.
