A Little Charmed History

Who Wore The First Charm And Why

Charms have a lengthly history that dates back as early as the Egyptian Pharaohs when precious stones coupled with metals first appeared in the form of jewelry. It is believed that charms were used by Egyptians to prepare for the afterlife as well as identifying status and to ward off evil spirits.

In the era of the Roman Empire charms called "ichthys" (fish) charms were hidden beneath robes worn by Christians and pulled out to identify themselves in order to gain entry to certain events and secret forbidden worship services.

During the Middle Ages charms were worn by knights, kings and the like to identify family origin, a profession and political position as well as for protection during battle.

When the Renaissance era began the popularity and use of charms dwindled due in part to the wide use of books and other publications. This remained the case until the 20th century when Queen Victoria made a fashion statement with charms and pendants.

The end of WWII signified the use of charms as we know it today as soldiers returning home brought loved ones small trinkets identifying the lands where they served.

Today the charmed market is hugely popular generating millions of dollars in revenue each year.
