Jerry Garcia Ties

Updated on March 19, 2011

Jerry Garcia Ties

Jerry Garcia ties or J Garcia ties are highly sought after, artistic ties.  These works of art are based on the artwork for Jerry Garcia, the lead vocalist and arguably, frontman, for the band the Grateful Dead.

The Jerry Garcia ties are unique and vibrant.  They can be worn for all occasions whether it be a formal party or a day to the office.  They also make wonderful Father's Day for the Dead Head dad that wants to sport something close to his musical tastes.

This page introduces you to the different neckties and shows you just how beautiful they are.  I have also compiled a list of every tie that has been produced under the J Garcia necktie brand.

Who is J Garcia?

Jerry Garcia was the lead vocalist for the famous band Grateful Dead. The ties that are featured on this page are based on artwork by Jerry Garcia. He actually studied at the California School of Fine Arts (now named the San Francisco Art Institute) and was an avid painter. The ties reflect his love of abstract designs and are truly unique.

The line of ties is actually named J. Garcia to purposely separate it from the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia merchandise line. It was launched in 1992 by Stonehenge, Ltd.

Art or Clothing?

Do/will you wear your J Garcia tie?

Yes, it seems silly to own something beautiful and not wear it.

The Various Lines of Jerry Garcia Ties

There is a large variety of Jerry Garcia ties to choose from. There are different lines that these ties have been divided into. However, after much research, I have yet to find the proper name of the collections and lines. I have compiled what I feel is a good representative of these lines, but if you have more knowledge than I, please contact me or leave a comment at the bottom of the page so I can improve the list and make it all inclusive.

I was shocked when I started this site because nowhere online is there a list that includes the names of all of the ties. I have spent a few hours visiting various necktie sites to see if I have included all of Jerry Garcia's Ties. I truly cannot believe I'm the first to ever want to know the entire list and compile one. huh!?

Anyone out there know the history of the labels on the Jerry ties? I think from what I can find out online is that the green and yellow label is from the original releases from Stonehenge Ltd. The newer signature looking labels I suspect are from Mulberry. Would love to find out. I would think the ties that were made while he was alive would be worth more than the ones made after.

I didn't see a listing for "Pine and Rock" tie that was in collection fifteen. I bought it at our local Goodwill store for my husband. The last one I bought was given to a friend who happened to be a musician. It was a lean year and we had very little money so I talked my husband into giving it as a Christmas present. To my dismay, the man was not impressed (pearls beofre swine) and I have been looking for a replacement since that time. THE BIG QUESTION: What was the first JG tie issued? Does anybody have a photo of it? Would love to see it. Peace, Love and Grits Y'all.

I have about 25 in my collection, got my first one in 1998. I wore one on my first day at a new job, and found out that my boss has a collection of 100+. I'm adding to the collection very slowly, but only with new ties. I select them for colors that are suitable for my clothes, and try to get a different design each time. Yes, I wear them all, because everyone I work with enjoys them too!

I've been collecting them for years and now have over 800. I wish I had the time to create a collectors site, or at least find one if it exists.

@nebby: That is a great idea for a gift. I often struggle to purchase gifts for my husband... not sure why I never thought about doing that. He's a bit obsessed by the grateful dead! =)

I've always enjoyed the artwork on the Jerry Garcia ties. I've purchased many as gifts although I don't know anyone who wears ties. I will often have the tie framed so that it can be used as artwork. I can't see them just sitting in the closet and it's a great way to show off the art.

I am selling my extensive and very well cared for collection. About 200 ties in all and i am selling them for 10 dollars per tie. Can't stand to split up the collection though. So have to sell them all. All of them are rare now. Collected in early 2000s. 16 pounds of silk!

Thank you for this reference! Amazing! I found a J. Garcia tie at the thrift shop and I'm desperatly trying to find the name of it so I can give it to my boyfriend (he's a huge fan). Please let me know if there is anywhere I can snap a photo to email and investigate! Thanks

@anonymous: Thank you so much for breaking this all down for me. I have googled and searched and there is very little information out there. I'm happy you like the webpage and like what I'm trying to do. I need to fix up some of the page now with the new information you have provided. I was very confused by Collection 42, Collection 44, etc. Thank you!!! Check back in a bit for the updates.

First off, thank you for doing this. There really is nowhere that has an even somewhat comprehensive list of j. Garcia ties. I'm not an expert here, but from what I've seen there are various collections (Collection 17, Collection 52, Pen & Ink Collection) and then crossing those are the designs you have listed above, which I think are based off of different paintings.

It seems that it's possible to have a type/painting that appears in different collections. I've found Space Container ties in Collection 42 and 46 and Shaman in 52 and 17.

One piece/painting you don't have above is New York, New York. It's part of the Pen & Ink Collection.

          Keep up the good work!
