Some Important Safety Tips - (for children's backpacks)

Make sure to buy the right backpack and that you child is using it correctly.

  1. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a child's backpack should not be bigger than the length of the child's torso.
  2. Always have the child use both shoulder straps. Make sure to adjust them so they are snug, but not too tight.
  3. Make sure that your child wears the backpack close to the body and about two inches above the waist so it rests evenly in the middle of the back .
  4. The backpack should never weigh more than 15% percent of the childs's body weight (per AOTA, 2004-2006). For instance, a 90 lb child is able to carry 13.5 lbs in their backpack.
  5. A backpack that is too heavy can cause injury to your child's back. Some signs that indicate backpack strain are stooped posture, pain when wearing the pack, tingling or numbness in the arms, and red marks on the shoulders. You should see your child's doctor for evaluation.
  6. Place some reflective tape on the outside of the backpack. This will help keep the child visible to drivers at night.

Not yet but not for lack of trying, so far we have to sort our life and then we can think about children.
